Covid Relief Package to Include Billions for Black Farmers

$5 billion out of $1.9 trillion...

So far, no reports of Idi Amin or Mugabe kicking anybody off of their land.

The Covid relief package is providing a platform for a historic Senate newcomer to deliver for a long-struggling constituency: black farmers. Led by Sen. Rev. Raphael Warnock of Georgia, Senate Democrats are touting a $5 billion provision in the relief bill that will wipe out federal debts for farmers of color, and invest in reforms to help these farmers build generational wealth by keeping their family farms in the family.

On a call with reporters Wednesday, Warnock celebrated the inclusion of the Emergency Relief for Farmers of Color Act in the $1.9 trillion Covid package. Warnock said Democrats were acting to “ensure equity in our recovery efforts and address longstanding injustices that have left some communities behind for far too long.” The newly elected Warnock, who is the first black senator to serve from Georgia, underscored that this federal assistance “will not only help farmers of color, but will also lift up the economies of our rural communities working to recover from the economic turndown.”

What’s actually laughable is the fact that slave owners were paid reparations from the government following the abolition of slavery.

Think about that for a second...that’s absolutely hilarious right?

It's dumb. But so is the idea of reparations in today's world. Any reparations should have been made at the time to actual victims. You can't fix something now that was done over a century ago.

Only in the District of Columbia, so you’re right it is hilarious.

Now I got the feeling you took some offense to my comment about 95% or more that got free land would sell it in a couple years. (If I’m wrong sorry) In no way was that a slight on any race, it would be true of any race that received free land to start a farm.

Perhaps, but you also can’t deny the socioeconomic impact of denying certain people the ability to own land and purchase housing many years ago.

Certain groups had a multi-generational head start on accumulating wealth over others.

Which "groups" would that be?

Nice deflection. I thought you might want to answer since you pigeon holed a group of people as "entitled"

Maybe you aren’t smart enough.

Entitled is thinking you deserve something, whether you do or not. That’s not at all what I posted.

Try again.

Just answer my question, which "groups" had a multi-generational head start? Was it white people in general? Was it Italian people, German people, Irish people? You see there are a lot of "groups" that you want to lump everyone into that looks a certain way.

Let's see.... they were alive and were financially 'harmed' (regardless whether or not you believe slavery was right or wrong) and compensated at the time.

No one today was alive when those who were actually harmed by slavery. Yet somehow descendants (and there were only 330,000 west Africa slaves in North America by the way so good luck actually proving you are a descendant) somehow believe THEY deserve reparations.

THAT is absolutely hilarious

Who gets reparations? Do mixed race people get them? If so, do only mixed race people with obvious dark skin get them? Do black people who are not descended from slaves get them? Once paid, will no more ever be asked for again? Will the subject be dropped entirely? Will reparations function as a "cleaning of the slate" for race relations? Once paid, will new generations of black people be owed reparations?

And who pays? What percentage of the white US population descended from slaves? Do all whites pay? Even the ones who descended from white men who fought to end slavery? What percentage of the whites who are descended from slave owners are piss poor and have not actually benefited in any meaningful way from their lineage of slave ownership?

There are so many factors that just make reparations seem impossible even if you're in favor of it from a moral standpoint. From where I'm standing, the only thing we can logistically do today to help black people is to stop the government from incentivizing the destruction of their families through welfare and to stop locking up fathers for petty drug related crimes. Those things will also be difficult in today's highly polarized political landscape, but it is really the only thing I can think of that is possible, fair, and will improve the situation of black people in the US.
