Money vs. Sugar

I'm sure there are other guys who have retired undefeated, but I don't feel like looking it up right now. In either event, the reason that fighters eventually lose is that they fight too long. Captain obvious, right? This is usually because of money. Believe it or not, boxers are not generally known for their financial savvy. They go broke, and they need another payday. And then another. And then one more.

Somewhere Nate Campbell is currently nodding his head at this statement. Not that he was putting a perfect record on the line but the domination he received from Ortiz a couple weeks ago was still sad.

What is sad is when you see these fighters 10 years later. Ali is much more the rule than the exception. The exception is a guy like Ray Leonard who made his money and then got out of the game in time to keep his marbles. Leonard fought one fight too many (the Terry Norris fight). Most elite boxers fight about six fights too many.

[Edit]: Leonard fought again in '97. Wow. I had no idea. So I guess he fought two fights too many.

Did Manny win that election in Phillipiness where he was running for the Senate>? Anybody know?

If this fight went down in Nov at MGM, what do you all predict would be the line??

Better yet if you think it is a close line, who you going to put your hard earned money on????

Can you really not bet Mayweather? He has to be the favorite. If I was guessing I would say -175 for Mayweather.

Yeah, that sounda about right. Something a hair under 2/1.

I wouldn't even consider betting against Mayweather at any point in the next two years. He may be boring in the ring, but he is as virtuostic* a boxer as I've seen.

*This is likely not a word. As a boxer, he is virtuoso. You got it.

I am going to go to Dallas and watch Manny's next fight..Margarito might give him a lil bit of a sweat.

Floyd I am sorry to say is obviously ducking him. I used to think their is no way, as I am a Mayweather fan, but it is stupid. Like Tyson used to say, "Put them in front of me and I will knock them down."

Floyd dont want it right now. By the time this fight happens we are all going to be going crazy!!

Hopefully Margarito can get back to where he was before he got fat and put plaster of paris in his gloves, he was a hitter before his first payday.

Paul Williams should be waiting for the winner.

Just saw that the fight is at 157 lbs. Suprised.

Anxious to watch this fight.

And yet, Martinez's Middlewieght belt will still be on the line. Apparently the 157 weight was a Williams demand. Seems ridiculous to me to have catchweight for a title fight but whatever, at least its finally happening.

Why?? I am with you....lets just get this fight on...

Because then what the hell is the point of having a "Middleweight" title belt if you are having the fight over the middleweight limit? I thought that was kind of the point of the weight classes. If two guys want to fight outside the restrictions of those classes, then so be it but it shouldn't have any impact on a weight class they aren't fighting in. Sorry, love boxing but this is an example of one of about a million issues I have with the sactioning bodies.

Ultimately though, you're right, mostly just happy this fight is actually happening. Should be part of a pretty good end to the year.

Wasn't sure if I should bump this or just start an "upcoming fights" thread but...

Oh, and anyone with showtime should be watching next Saturday night. Marquez v. Vazquez IV will be on. I don't think it can live up to the first 3 fights just bc I doubt they are still able to take that kind of punishment anymore, esp. Vazquez. But on the off chance it does live up to those, it should be pretty epic.

Never quoted myself before but the above recommendation proved not to be my best but there's another on Showtime this Saturday that has some potential.

Marquez is taking on JuanMa Lopez and the potential is there for some serious fireworks. Marquez has been a part of some great wars and Lopez doesn't know any other speed than fast, or any direction except forward. His last fight with a decent fighter in Ponce de Leon had 4 knockdowns in 1 1/2 rounds, 3 for Lopez and 1 for Ponce. Overall, I'm afraid Marquez is on the wrong side of the hill to keep up but damn if I'm not going to watch to find out. This one has some people saying "Fight of the Year" potential.

(Which I'm sure means it will be awful now that I just typed that)
