There are 12 guys, if I counted correctly, ahead of Phil Fulmer who have NEVER won an outright conference title. What a joke.

4. Jim Grobe, Wake Forest
5. Bob Stoops, Oklahoma
6. Frank Beamer, Virginia Tech
7. Nick Saban, Alabama
8. Steve Spurrier, South Carolina
9. Dennis Erickson, Arizona State
10. Mack Brown, Texas
12. Urban Meyer, Florida
14. Bobby Bowden, Florida State
15. Tommy Tuberville, Auburn

18. Joe Paterno, Penn State

Just in this list, with Grobe being at #4, are 16 ridiculous statements, like "Jim Grobe is a better coach than Butch Davis."

After Tom Dienhart made a public idiot of himself with his SEC coach rankings (which I ripped and redid at my blog), Dienhart has now cemented himself as the most worthless, idiotic, clueless, moron that ever wrote about sports. Check out the list:

4. Jim Grobe, Wake Forest
5. Bob Stoops, Oklahoma
6. Frank Beamer, Virginia Tech

8. Steve Spurrier, South Carolina
9. Dennis Erickson, Arizona State
10. Mack Brown, Texas
11. Kirk Ferentz, Iowa
12. Urban Meyer, Florida
13. Tom O'Brien, N.C. State
14. Bobby Bowden, Florida State
15. Tommy Tuberville, Auburn
16. Lloyd Carr, Michigan

49. Ron Zook, Illinois
50. Guy Morriss, Baylor
51. Mike Stoops, Arizona
52. Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State
53. Bill Doba, Washington State
54. Ty Willingham, Washington
55. Randy Edsall, UConn
56. Sylvester Croom, Mississippi State
57. Ron Prince, Kansas State
58. Tim Brewster, Minnesota
59. Ted Roof, Duke

Coaches are measured by accomplishments, and Bowden and Paterno have done enough over their careers that their recent struggles won't move them out of the top tier, especially to a 2-year hot mover. Call me in 5 seasons for a more accurate Urban Meyer ranking.

I have to defend Coach Rod. I agree that he is not #3, but he is more than just hype. West Virginia isn't exactly crawling with in-state D-1 talent. He did get upset by USF last year but has still been highly successful, and I dare say, will be remembered for having a better run than Nehlen.

When West Virginia plays defense their coach can be ranked in the top 15. Until then he's ranked too high

Totally agree but on a side note Grobe is a really nice guy. I went on a recruiting visit to Ohio when he was there and really seemed like a great guy. He could be one of the shortest coaches on that list too.

Mack Brown????????

Other than his title being more recent, I would put him and Fulmer in the same area. Brown doesn't even have to leave the state for Vince Youngs of the world to fall in his lap. Under Mack Okla. to Texas is what Fla. to Tenn. is under Fulmer.

True, he is a tough one to place in a ranking I think.

Yea I think they are both good coaches but not great coaches. I guess I would put both in the 15 to 20 range but with a more consistency and titles I'd move them to the top ten.

13. Tom O'Brien, N.C. State
14. Bobby Bowden, Florida State

That is the biggest shock to me. You don't expect to see that name IN FRONT on Bobby Bowden.
O'Brien is 75-45.

Mark Mangino higher than 35? Noooooo wayyyyy. He's 25-35 at Kansas. 35th sounds about right.

His record doesn't reflect the job he is doing IMO, I think that program is only about a year or two away from consistently challenging Nebraska for the top of that division. He is a heck of a recruiter too.

Remember, this team was an overtime game against Nebraska and blown leads against OK St., Texas A&M and Baylor from being the class of the Big 12 North. When has Kansas ever played that many close games? Mangino has them headed in the right direction.

Is that a serious question?

I really like Friedgen, but he's not even in the same zip code.

It is probably not possible for those 2 guys to ever be in the same zip code.

Man that was a slow pitch softball waiting there, sorry.

:)

It was such a slow pitch that I had decided that it was too easy and had deleted the post. :p

Mangino definitely has the team headed in a good direction. However, that kind of thinking is also the reason the list is absurd in the first place. You have to base this on accomplishments, because it's the only proof you have. Ranking Mangino at #35 is pretty dang good for a Kansas coach.

I'm just tired of a small percentage of VNers making us all look bad by adding no insightful commentary on ANYTHING. TVA is especially bad, as I consider him a very persistent troll. He posts things that are completely ridiculous, but acts like he's serious.
