More Bad Press

I'm just now checking in, but I assume Tee Martin turned downed the offer? Well, maybe it just wasn't the right fit for him.

Our public opinion can only rise at this point, IMO.

Hart/Dooley/Cheek have made that pretty clear to the nation.

You know, ESPN never reports on any assistance, but for some reason, they are running a scroll about Tee turning down Vols for Lane Kiffin. Go figure.

Shirley fans of other teams have more to do than to pay attention to what some former UT player does or doesn't do.I Follow college football closely and could not tell you of a single player who's ever not gone back to his university when he had the chance... Can anyone else remember anyone not doing that?

All you people wishing Tee well for toying with UT don't realize the negative press/field day the sports media/espn is gonna have with this-- once again making UT look bad. Your crazy if you don't think recruits will look at this and wonder why one of our wonder boys diss us for the coach that screwd us. I'm just sayn be ready for it!!

I find it hard to believe that 20 people "liked" this post... It’s a dang WR coach, who cares... It reflects neither good nor bad about Tennessee. People accept or decline job offers all of the time for all kind of reasons.

Publicity was always a huge part of Kiffin's process. I figured that he'd done us a favor by elevating Martin's status, but we did him a favor by elevating Martin's status.

It is a shame that Tennessee and its fans do not use the connection to USCw more to our own advantage, instead of behaving as we do.

Every job opening within the NCAA has many candidates, many of whom decline. It is actually a compliment when someone declining an offer at UT makes the press, yet our fans turn it into some sort of embarrassment.

Unless it is some sort of Sandusky like scandal, all press is really good press. So many fans have screamed that this has been a botched hire because we have been publicly denied by a few coaches. That isn't a sign that anything is bungled, it is a sign that enough people actually care what happens at UT (either for or against) that reporting on that story will increase ratings. You know why every person who is interviewed at Purdue, Boston College, NCSU or Colorado isn't being splashed across the news ticker? Because they TRULY are irrelevant.

When trying to win the media battle, the fate worse than death is when no one is talking about your failures or achievements. When coaches turning us down no longer makes the news, that is when UT has really become an embarrassment.

If Tee wants to stay at USC, who are we to tell him that is a bad decision? He is a WR coach. A position coach. There are other similarly gifted, perhaps even BETTER, candidates out there to teach our WR's technique and route running.

BOTTOM LINE: I hope that every decision made at UT is nitpicked by every major media outlet. Why? Because every recruit that watches that will never remember why he heard the name Tennessee, just that it has been beat into his brain repeatedly. That is why stupid or annoying commercials work, it isn't about liking what you hear or see, it is about it being beat into you enough that when you are at the point of making a decision that specific name pops up in your head.

sorry for long rant.

Unbelievable! At this rate, there are going to be several communities with cardiac ICU units filled with UT fanatics that have stroked out over this coaching search. Seriously, we won't know whether CBJ is a good hire or not until next December! (I think it is) If we were all truly honest, most of the posters on this sight would never turn down Southern California/Los Angelos for East Tennessee if we actually had the choice.

So PLEASE tell me how to spin this that doesn't make us look like the team that has been turned down by Numerous People this year and hires a sub par coach 3 years ago

You DON'T spin anything...

You say good bye Tee and good luck.. You then press on to next season and start winning some damn games..

Fock what what everyone else thinks. It's us against the world..

Winning ENDS all this..

Only in your mind. No one in sports will care if He turned us down.

key takeaway:

"He flew to Knoxville on Monday to meet with Jones, but decided he wouldn't pull a "Lane Kiffin" and bolt after one year despite a deal that would have paid him as much as $400,000 per year."

That, in context, makes Tee look like a man of character, Kiff look like a jackass, and UT look like it is just caught in the middle between the two. I don't see how that hurts, and personally I think it only helps.

And, don't look now, here is some good press:

We truly have some uneducated inbreds in our fanbase....

Pay attention:

Its an effing job!!! He already proved VFL status. He chose to come to school here. He didn't throw beer bottles at other peoples property. He didn't cause trouble. He showed up and played ball.

He should work wherever the hell he wants to.
