Every process has losses. The conversion of steam to electric power whether coal or nuclear is only 30-40% efficient; NG is just over 40%. Wind and solar are inefficient in their own ways - and not always available. All those are subject to transmission losses and the the losses involved in charging a car battery. IC engines have losses, and there are losses in refining and transporting fuel, but if really add it all up, it's probably better burning fuel at the end process rather than to generate electric power and use that to run EVs. Due to political goals, you probably won't find a real honest end to end comparison - truth is generally a casualty when a decision is made and has to be supported.
