Most Encouraging Things About Pruitt's Recruiting

Good to know. Future Vols have no interest in things like roads, schools, culture, you know that kind of stuff they take for granted in those "high tax states". While you're at it, might as well toss a college diploma that is any more valuable than one from, say, the University of Phoenix, Corinthian College, or Trump U. Jeez!

It's all about the bottom line and manufacturing is growing in Tennessee low taxes and more jobs will attract more families to the great state of Tennessee.

I was gonna say he got McKenzie out of Cali who was like top 5 in the country i believe but he legacy I believe

Same for Dillon Bates

I know neither of these have done much at all but they were rated super high

But yea Butch def benefited from an unusual amount of legacies and instate talent surging just as he was hired

Not signing guys with health issues is a big one to me. I think that we won't experience the unbelievable amount of injuries under CJP because he no doubt understands how important it is to sign guys with out that issue.

LB is by far the biggest position of need.

Most of the teams currently ahead of UT in the rankings have already signed most or all of their class. UT will move up unless Pruitt starts falling in love with 2* players.

Very nice to see UT reaching out across the country but there is always going to be some economics involved. Ten hours in a plane plus hours in a car to recruit CA kids... is a gamble compared to seeing 5 or 6 recruits in the same time by driving to ATL. My guess is this is a product of hiring Helton who brings those relationships from USC.

That and I expect Pruitt to coach a very aggressive and attacking variety of football. Jones for all his talk was a finesse coach... a "fine points of playing winning football" coach. He worried more about hand placement than aggressively getting leverage then destroying the opponent.

Players get injured less when not playing tentative. I don't think UT ever did anything but that under Jones.

Wait - is someone from Arkansas poking fun at Tennessee's roads/infrastructure? Seriously?

I live in one of those high tax states. The roads are some of the worst in the country with potholes, disrepair and generally poorly designed. The schools as a whole are failing and some have even gone bankrupt. And the culture...Detroit and Flint...look them up. Your ridiculous statements show the depth of elitism you carry along with a severe lack of knowledge.

If wanting to own a degree from an institution that is more recognized for its academics than its athletics is "elitist", I plead guilty. I'll cede the "severe lack of knowledge" title to you.

Why don't you just plead ignorance and be done with it?

The emphasis on size and toughness is the most encouraging thing I've noticed about Pruitt's recruiting so far.

This, seems like we are building around a system instead of just putting random pieces together.

Youth can be outgrown, drunkeness sobered, ignorance taught, but stupidity is forever.

I'm afraid you fall into the last category.

At least I'm smart enough not to live in the cess pool of a state you do. And then to think you have the audacity to try to talk down to anyone with your Wally World education is truly mind boggling.

It'd be nice to get some LBs, but it's honestly not the biggest position of need for 2018. We have Kirkland, Bituli, Sapp, and Ignont. If we were to run 3-4 (and I don't think we will in 2018), could also move Darrell Taylor to OLB. I'd love to land a top LB, but in terms of high-priority needs, I'd say it's down the list, especially if our new coaching staff can actually coach the LBs we already have.

Our LB play has been extremely weak. Even Kirkland is not that good. Bituli is probably the only really good LB we have. We need much, much better LB play. Look at the best teams in the SEC, Georgia and Bama. Both have elite LB play. We are not even close.

Size, size, size...we are getting huge recruits at every position. No more 6.0ft linemen, tall d backs, tall te.
I love all our players, but quite a few are undersized for the SEC.

I don't want to read too much into what is basically a hurried-up partial-year class for the new staff, but there are two things that really stand out to me.

We're doing well on positions of need. If you asked me to rank our needs when Pruitt was hired, I'd say (1) WRs / TEs, (2) O-line, (3) backup QB, and (4) D-line. We had one SEC-caliber WR last season (Callaway) after JJ went down; we desperately need help there. O-line is an obvious position of need, as well. With the coaching change, our class may still be ranked relatively low (#26 on 247), but the staff has been very good at filling the most high-priority needs with guys like Alontae Taylor (WR), Dominick Wood-Anderson (TE), and Jerome Carvin (OL).

We're recruiting nationally again. Butch Jones was a pretty good recruiter, even if he was terrible at player development and coaching. Yet, he wasn't an elite recruiter. He was good at getting Tennessee recruits and recruits from neighboring states, but he was never able to recruit nationally. The last coach we had that could was Phil Fulmer. It's very interesting to see that Pruitt and staff have been getting West Coast kids. To me, that's a promising sign for the future. While the state of Tennessee has been producing more blue-chip talent in recent years, and we can aways get some recruits from Atlanta, North Carolina, and Virginia, to be able to consistently land top 5 classes, you have to recruit nationally. It's difficult to remember the last time we had a serious chance at so many recruits in California.

I refuse to get too optimistic, as we've already seen that recruiting is just the first step to contending in the SEC and the other steps are even more critical. But I am encouraged by our sudden ability to recruit nationally again. With Tennessee's brand name and facilities, there's no reason we can't pull a few blue-chips out of California, Texas, and /or Florida every year.

brandon johnson is def an sec caliber WR as well. the others i think need time to develop and were playing prematurely

Gents, we have a lovely politics forum if you all want to take this up over there. But when we are talking about football, we don't wanna think about this 5h1t.

I have no doubt. Look at what defense our HC and new DC have been running. The question is can they pull the players they need to make it work by February, and who on campus can make the transitions to fill the needs?

Some seem to think this roster needs to be rebuilt. But I believe we have better speed than the last time we tried to run the 3-4. I just hope Pruitt can rehabilitate a team that lost it's confidence, and bring the best out of them. No matter what alignment they use.

I'll have to see some elite linebackers before I can comment on filling needs.

I believe Peterson will be a Vol & he's a stud. I personally want to snag some blue chip DB's. I just feel like having Elite Corners makes your defense so much better.

I'm honestly not that worried. We have several open spots and a better average star rating than several teams ahead of us. Pruitt will have a lot more time to put together a better class after the dead period. I think we still land a top 15 class this year.
