Most Encouraging Things About Pruitt's Recruiting

Tennessee's talent level is on the rise and it's going to grow now that "tax reform" has passed. Migration from high tax states to lower tax states will bring more families into Tennessee, producing more homegrown talent. But they must be taught never to utter the words alabama or georgia.

Florida is a much lower tax state. Plus there's the nice weather.

Hafta disagree w/ your assessment of our WR Corp... Brandon Johnson is a great WR, good speed, reliable hands, crisp route runner... Tyler Bird was underutilized... could we use more help there absolutely, are we as abysmal there as you’re making it sound... No.

Route running has been a problem. Coaching fixes this. However, QB may be where the problem lies (can't throw worth a damn? I don't know) Here's what I do know, None of the above, QB's, Receiver routes, nothing makes any difference if the O line doesn't give time for these things to play out. O-line O-line O-line and on and on...

This is exactly right! Championships will be won in the trenches. Not a glamorous position, but all others depend upon it! :hi:

Good to know. Future Vols have no interest in things like roads, schools, culture, you know that kind of stuff they take for granted in those "high tax states". While you're at it, might as well toss a college diploma that is any more valuable than one from, say, the University of Phoenix, Corinthian College, or Trump U. Jeez!

The roads and infrastructure in TN are much better than the roads and infrastructure in KY, despite the fact that KY has significantly more taxes. There is a lot to be said for pragmatism.

Coach Aight has us at 28th and the way he is going, he could have us at 10! 10th is a stretch but based on what he did in 13 days.....anything is possible! He is setting himself up very well for coach of the year, rookie HC of the year, best HC hire of 2017 and last but not least; showing the country that Volunteer fans should not only be listened to but congratulated for speaking up and stepping up!!!!!!

I have no doubt. Look at what defense our HC and new DC have been running. The question is can they pull the players they need to make it work by February, and who on campus can make the transitions to fill the needs?

Some seem to think this roster needs to be rebuilt. But I believe we have better speed than the last time we tried to run the 3-4. I just hope Pruitt can rehabilitate a team that lost it's confidence, and bring the best out of them. No matter what alignment they use.

Many of our defensive players were recruited by Pruitt...at UGA and Bama. They’re fits for both schemes. Except for our smallish linebackers and corners, it’s almost like we recruited for a 3-4. More relevant is the fact that a transition generally involves a setback in performance. We’ve had two seasons at the VERY BOTTOM. Only direction is up.

When I lived in TN I appreciated the nice roads but I found it very frustrating that the government seemed to prioritize roads over things like education. Different places, different priorities. I now live in a state with worse roads AND worse education but unlike what an earlier poster assumed, most of us don't have the option to move states for tax avoidance reasons.

LB is by far the biggest position of need.

Most of the teams currently ahead of UT in the rankings have already signed most or all of their class. UT will move up unless Pruitt starts falling in love with 2* players.

Very nice to see UT reaching out across the country but there is always going to be some economics involved. Ten hours in a plane plus hours in a car to recruit CA kids... is a gamble compared to seeing 5 or 6 recruits in the same time by driving to ATL. My guess is this is a product of hiring Helton who brings those relationships from USC.

Last paragraph hits the infatuation with recruiting California kids to a “T”, pun intended.

Too much time, effort, and money invested in the slimmest of chances a kid will shun so many West Coast schools to come here. How many (non-legacy) have signed, and how many have been valuable, long-term contributors?

The ROI simply isn’t there.

It'd be nice to get some LBs, but it's honestly not the biggest position of need for 2018. We have Kirkland, Bituli, Sapp, and Ignont. If we were to run 3-4 (and I don't think we will in 2018), could also move Darrell Taylor to OLB. I'd love to land a top LB, but in terms of high-priority needs, I'd say it's down the list, especially if our new coaching staff can actually coach the LBs we already have.

We're moving to a 3-4, we have a huge need for LBs.

Definitely agree on Tyler Bird
Surely Tyler Byrd will be moving to defense under CJP!

How do you determine a value on recruiting Casey Clausen to Tennessee? I'd say it was definitely a good ROI, more than enough to offset others that were not.

Was waiting for someone to try to justify the CA recruiting.

Said in my best Jim Mora Sr. Beer commercial voice (“playoffs? You wanna talk about playoffs?”)

Clausen? That’s your rebuttal? Clausen is a good ROI for the last 18 years of investment?

Millions of $$$, countless hours, countless missed opportunities closer to home for ONE QB who went 34-10 during 2000-2003 and whose best finish was ONE Eastern Division Title.

TEN players like that MIGHT begin to justify the cost and lost opportunities in surrounding states, but just Clausen?

Forget all the kids we didn’t get, just go back and look at the California kids we did get but didn’t last 4 years, or didn’t contribute. Start with Sheriron Jones (playing for New Mexico.)

This methodology/thinking is one of the reasons we are exactly where we are. 3 Division titles in the last 19 years.
