Most overrated college coaches

Harbaugh is a great coach. But it seems like Michigan threw a massive salary at him with the expectation that he's work his way into it. The other top paid coaches earned it before it was handed over (Ferentz excluded).

Exactly. Michigan pulled a Sumlin. They paid a guy on a promise. In Harbaugh's case, the promise came from a lot of "I almost got it!" games. In Sumlin's case, it came from a guy named Manziel.

Either way, they put the money before the proof. That = over-rated as long as the guy doesn't come through.

I believe Saban became the top paid college football coach when he took over Bama, correct? I'd say his resume was right with Harbaugh when he took over Alabama.

Harbaugh also could have had multiple NFL jobs when Michigan went after him (both the Raiders and the Jets wanted him) so had to pay him an elite salary.

Another who says, "he lost a lot of big games that he was in."

Bridesmaid. Can win games, but not the big one. Not worth $7M/year. Over-rated.

He can prove me wrong, if he ever wins a title. Good chance he never will, though. He hasn't in 13 years as a head coach yet.

Lotta smoke, little fire. Over-rated.

So Butch Jones is overrated right? He doesn't have a Power Five conference title yet was paid over guys like Dabo Swinney, Mark Helfrich, Rich Rodriguez, Bill Synder, Frank Beamer, and Tommy Tuberville, all guys who won Power 5 conference titles. Also on par with guys like Gary Pinkel, Mark D'Antonio, Chris Petersen, Bret Beilema, and Gary Patterson. That's how this works right?

Harbaugh's teams played in 3 straight NFC championship games. Went to one Super Bowl.

He took Stanford from dog crap to 12-1 and an Orange Bowl win in 4 seasons.

There are only two schools that would not trade coaches with Michigan right now. Ohio State and Alabama.

Saban had a national title on his resume. So, no, not the same at all.

I'd say Harbaugh's NFL resume and 2010 Stanford season was just as impressive as Saban's national title and two SEC title. JMO.

He was one of the top five coaches in the NFL during that span.

Current FBS coaches that have won a national title: Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, Jimbo Fisher, and Les Miles.

This isn't about being a good NFL coach. None of that part of your argument has any bearing on this discussion. Because this is about what college coaches are over-rated.

As for the other two points you made that I've quoted:

He was one of the top 5 in the NFL while there. That makes him in the 5/32 percentile. The college Power 5 equivalent is 10/65. So you're saying his pro performance puts him at the level of the top 10 coaches in the college game. I seriously doubt that's true, I can certainly think of 10 coaches I'd go with over him, but even if you're right, you're still showing that he's over-rated. Because his pay isn't at the top 10 level (about $4.5M-$4.8M /year), it's at the top 2 level ($7M/year). == over-rated.

You forgot Bob Stoops. And you've made my point for me, yet again. Harbaugh is paid more (significantly more, millions more) than four other coaches who have all done something he couldn't: won a national title. See? Over-rated.

He was at STANFORD. STANFORD does not win football national championships, much less do it in 4 years. They have had people like Bill Walsh and Dennis Green coach there.

Then he took a team quarterbacked by Colin Kaepernick to the Super Bowl.

He's been at Michigan for 5 minutes and has them in the top 5 and a playoff contender.

This is his 6th season as a college coach. He was an NFL coach for 4.

It took Nick Saban 10 seasons to get his first national title.

Please name these ten coaches that you'd put ahead of Harbaugh, I need a good laugh.

Honestly? Yeah. Butch has not earned a higher salary than those guys with the exception of Tuberville and maybe Pinkel (who at least won a few division crowns).

Oh please give me this list.

Dissembling now. This conversation is about Harbaugh being over-rated. Stay focused, please.

No, not even remotely as impressive. Not even close. Nothing but nothing equates to a national title. Being bridesmaid 100 times never gets you married. Gotta be the bride.

Yup. Led a program to its greatest season ever in his fourth year after taking over a 1-10 team but he's overrated.

No, no, no sir. You brought up how a college football coach should be judged upon its salary. You say Jim Harbaugh is overrated because he hasn't won a national title based upon the pay scale bracket he is. I listed multiple coaches in Butch Jones' pay bracket that have much better resumes than him. I want to know, from your perspective then, if that's only how a coach should be be judged upon then.

If that's how we are judging coaches then yes I would agree. Unlike our fellow friend here, that's not how I judge college football coaches because it's a silly argument.

FYI: I think Butch Jones is properly rated.

The funny thing here is unless your name is Saban or Meyer, no one has won jack in the last 10 years.

Jimbo Fisher, Gene Chizik and Les Miles are the only other guys in the last decade to win a national title.

Gene Chizik doesn't even have a job. Les Miles is dangling by a thread. And I'm sorry, and I mean this in no way to be disrespectful to Jimbo Fisher, but give me Harbaugh all day, every day.

PS....Mack Brown and Pete Carroll are also no longer coaching college football. Anyone know where Larry Coker is? Jim Tressel?

Don't forget about beating the #1 ranked team on the road as a 41 point underdog. Clearly overrated.

If you just watch Jim Harbaugh coaches teams (just like watching Nick Saban or Urban Meyer teams) you can tell how good of a coach he is. It's why it's beyond silly to argue this whole "ONLY SALARY MATTERS" argument.

Last I heard Larry Coker had been fired at UT San Antonio. But he has a natty so he's clearly better than Harbaugh.

Coker just retired from UTSA.

Actually, according to the poster's argument, Larry Coker was underpaid and deserved more money than Jim Harbaugh since Coker has a national title and Harbaugh has none.

Thirteen years as head coach. You're missing some in your count. Three at SDSU, four at Stanford, four in the NFL, and 2nd year running at Michigan. That = 13. Not 6, not 10.

I'm absolutely willing to admit points well made, and you've made one here. He did accomplish a great deal at Stanford, it being Stanford and all. So kudos to him. he never won a championship there, not even a conference championship, but he raised a Vandy-esque program from the dead.

That doesn't mean he's a miracle worker. Did you know that he's only the 9th-best coach Stanford ever had, by win %? Pop Warner was the best, of course (71-17-8, .781), but there were also guys like John Ralston, David Shaw, Bill Walsh, and Tyrone Willingham higher in the win column than Harbaugh. A total of eight other coaches out-performed him there.

So let's not make TOO huge a deal of it. He's a good coach. But he's over-rated today, based on his salary.

I seriously want to know what ten college coaches he takes over Harbaugh. Hell, there's not ten NFL/NCAA coaches combined I'd take over Harbaugh.

Harbaugh didn't coach at San Diego State. He coached at San Diego, which isn't in FBS.
