He's very underrated. 46 wins in his first 50 games. None of the big name coaches can say that, and, yet, he still doesn't get nearly as much press as his big school counterparts such as Saban, Meyer, and Carroll.

The reason he doesn't get the press is because of the conference he plays in. He won't get that press until he plays similar schedules and has similar results. That doesn't address whether he is over or underrated. I can tell you with certainty he is regarded as one of the best coaches out there, that isn't underestimating the man. That is not getting press because because the conference in which he plays doesn't matter on a national level, nothing more nothing less.

Thanks for validating the portion of my argument where Chris Petersen does more than Ferentz with lesser talent.

2006: Boise State 13-0
Iowa 6-7
2007: Boise State 10-3
Iowa 6-6
2008: Boise State 12-1
Iowa: 9-4
2009: Boise State 11-0 currently
Iowa: 10-2

The best can be measured much more accurately with stars than the lower level talent. Even then the stars don't mean as much as many would like to think. Once you get below 20 or 25 and especially 40's through 80's you're basically splitting hairs, the talent gap isn't nearly as wide as it would suggest.

Dan Hawkins at Boise, 53-11
at Colorado, 16-32

In the Big 12 North, possibly the weakest BCS conference division out there. Peterson, on the other hand, would have huge success at a BCS school.........makes sense.

Is Kirk Ferentz seriously on this poll?

Yeah. He is underrated. It's amazing he wins game at all let alone lots of them. I'm pretty sure Iowa's incoming average of recruits is usually below 3.0 and their classes usually rank lower than 50th. They've competed with Florida, LSU and Texas in bowl games. They compete with Ohio State and Penn State who easily out recruit them as well. I believe not a lot of coaches could do what he does with the talent he has. It's not because he's a bad recruiter either. It's because no one wants to go to Iowa. The whether isn't nice, there isn't anything to do... Iowa would have to sign a top coach from another school for top talent to actually look at them. Obviously no top coach would go there so yes, Kirk Ferentz is underrated because nobody else is doing what he does with the that talent.

He has done more with less than a good number of the coaches in this poll.

And question, why wouldn't Ferentz be on the list? Most fans have nothing good to say about him so he certainly isn't overrated. I think he is better than people give him credit for.

I don't know if he's overrated, but I think he's definitely overpaid. The kind of money he's been paid he should be finishing in the top 10 every year.

He didn't build a craphole into a team like that. He took a team that was already winning 90% of their games, already had superior talent to the competition, and kept the momentum going.

yup. i think he is a good coach, but he isn't even playing the likes of tcu/byu/utah every year. his best competition is fresno state for christ sake. i can't believe anyone would say he is underated. fairly rated maybe, but no way could he be considered underrated.

Without question, Al Golden at Temple is the most underrated coach, anybody that can do what he's done at Temple deserves some props, that program was so bad they gave serious consideration to dropping the whole football program, what he's done there is nothing short of a miracle.

Maybe he means since Ferentz has been on the list of most overpaid coahes for 3-4 years now, now that he actually had a top 5 team, maybe that makes him underrated? Not sure I follow that logic though...
