Movies you've seen recently II

The voyeurs, 6.5. On Amazon Prime
First 1/3 is slow. It gets better. If offended by nudity and sex probably not for you.

Queenpins 7/10 fun little white crime story. The coupon guy and Vince Vaughn are gold together.

Army of the Dead
10/10

A great movie, and a unique zombie outbreak movie because the alphas are unique zombies including eye color and the premise.
Army of the Dead is a combination of Aliens, Die Hard, and Ghosts of Mars.

I agree with Christ Stuckmann that Army of the Dead has 1 of the greatest horror movie openings.
The movie shows why the zombie outbreak happened in Las Vegas, and what humans used to make a needed quarantine zone.
Las Vegas is shown inside the quarantine zone and outside the quarantine zone.
A badass zombie Tiger is shown in multiple scenes.

A straight forward story, a literal ticking clock, highly memorable zombies that are Antagonists, an amazing opening, explosions, good action scenes, entertaining scary scenes, most of the distinguishable protagonists are likable good characters, the protagonists have understandable motivations for their goal because of good writing, a consistent tone, a memorable ending, a high stakes climax that has action scenes, the protagonists the audience are supposed to hate is understandable because of good writing.

The main obstacle that can prevent the protagonists from accomplishing their challenging goal are the Alphas that are the Army of the Dead. The other obstacle is a ticking clock, and the movie gives information about what exactly happens after time ends on the ticking clock.
The ticking clock isn’t forgotten because the movie showed information for how much time is left on the clock, and a character says how much time is left on the ticking clock.

The Alphas are shown to be formidable antagonists. The Alpha King and Alpha Queen are charismatic main antagonists including a scene that shows they are the leaders of the Alphas.

The movie respects the audience because the audience can fill in the blanks for anything that isn’t outright said including an implication about the Alpha King in an action scene.
The Alphas most likely were inspired by the Ghosts from the science fiction horror movie Ghosts of Mars.
The Movie has a pessimistic tone except I wasn't depressed watching the movie because Scott and most of the other human protagonists are likable characters.

I want Zack Synder to direct a faithful big-budget Doom reboot movie that has demons from Hell invading Mars because Zack Synder showed he can direct a great Aliens-style movie.

(2021) Kong vs Godzilla
9/10

I’m satisfied this vs movie showed a conclusive winner.
A highly entertaining popcorn giant animals movie.

The Kong vs Godzilla action scenes are amazing action scenes, entertaining action scenes that isn’t Kong vs Godzilla, a straightforward story, also an understandable answer for why did Godzilla attack, a high stakes climax, sequel bait, memorable ending, explosions, and a variety of locations.

The main good human characters have understandable motivations for their goals because of good writing, and the main evil characters have understandable motivations for their goals because of good writing.
The main good human characters are shown to be likable characters.
The main evil human characters advance the plot, and the main good characters advance the plot.

(2021) Mortal Kombat
8/10

A highly faithful adaptation made for the fans of the video game franchise Mortal Kombat because the movie has blood, hardcore violence including fatalities, amazing action scenes, excellent quality costumes including Scorpion and Sub Zero, Sub Zero is shown as an enemy of Scorpion in the movie, phrases used from the Mortal Kombat video games, Outworld gets shown off with a variety of locations in this movie, and amazing special effects for the characters powers including Liu Kang shooting a fireball and Sub Zero using his ice manipulation powers including creating an icy wall.
Scorpion is a badass very likable hero, the other heroes including Kung Lao are likable heroes, Sub Zero is a badass main villain, Shang Tsung is a charismatic Big Bad, and the other villains are entertaining villains.
Kano is an entertaining bastard in this movie including he did say a line that made me laugh.
Jax in this movie is a likable hero that is distinguishable from the other heroes because of his metal arms, one huge change he has is a challenge, and he says entertaining 1 liners.

The movie is a prequel because the movie takes place before the Mortal Kombat tournament.
The movie gives information about the Mortal Kombat tournament including the exact amount of Mortal Kombat tournaments Shang Tsung’s army have won.

A good popcorn fantasy action movie that has substance because of a straight forward story including stated stakes, an understandable motivation why the villains want to accomplish their goal, an understandable reason why the heroes want to accomplish their goal, a consistent serious tone, good comedy, character development, explanations for what should be explained including why the villains are choosing to fight the heroes in a prequel, drama, and a highly entertaining action climax that has stakes.
I enjoy this movie gave a strong explanation for how the Villains are finding the Heroes instead of the utterly uncreative cliché that is Villains find the Heroes because it’s convenient for the plot, and I also enjoy the movie gives a strong explanation why the Villains are choosing to fight the Heroes in a prequel set before the Mortal Kombat tournament.

Highly entertaining is the movie is self-aware because a ridiculous aspect of Mortal Kombat is said by a main character in the movie, and one obvious flaw about Mortal Kombat is commented by one main character.

A serious action fantasy movie that has good comedy doesn’t get overused which is why the serious tone is not undermined by the comedy.
A reboot that is a popcorn fantasy action movie because of the amazing action scenes that shows heroes with powers fighting villains with powers, excellent looking costumes, hardcore violence including the fatalities, amazing special effects for the characters powers, Elder Gods exist in this movie universe, and Outworld is an amazing looking fictional realm.

An easy plot hole is avoided because the main villain Shang Tsung gives an understandable explanation. Kano says a highly important line to Sonya because an easy plot hole is avoided because of that line.
I enjoy the design of this Shang Tsung that gives him a terrifying look for his eyes because his eyes are completely black.
Reptile has a humanoid reptile appearance in the movie, and he looks excellent.

A great Rated R reboot that isn’t a senseless action movie because why the villains are choosing to fight the heroes before the Mortal Kombat tournament is understandable because of the Villains goal. A shown reason for why Scorpion has a violent revenge goal, stakes, and an understandable motivation for why the heroes want to accomplish their goal.
I understood why action scenes are happening in the movie that aren’t a villain fighting a hero because of good writing.

The movie gives teasers for a sequel that has me excited for the sequel that I expect gets made.
The flaws of this movie are the quick cuts used during fights which weren’t necessary and frustrating to watch.

The fights don’t have any suspense because characters aren’t shown getting hurt during the fights before the fatalities, and characters don’t bleed before the fatalities. The characters aren’t shown having any struggle to continue fighting because of no shown painful reactions to getting attacked.
What I would want for the sequel for the fights similar to the John Wick movies and the Indiana Jones movies that is I want to see the characters getting hurt during the fights, bleeding during the fights, breathing hard, and the characters are shown having struggle including realistic painful reactions to getting attacked during the fights so the fights have suspense.

If you watch the movie you'll see the same obvious flaw for Reptile, Scorpion, and Gorro.

I know that everything is subjective. And I don't mean to be rude. But in no way possible were Mortal Kombat and Kong/Godzilla good movies. Even if you like those genre of films (which I do on occasion), they were really bad. Kong/Godzilla was basically a money grab. The plot made zero sense, even for a sci-fi film about animals the size of buildings.

Mortal Kombat was even worse, which sucks because the first 10-15 min was really well done. I can handle bad acting in an action flick. It's to be expected. But the storyline was rushed and bad. And the fight scenes were largely rushed and bad. The Goro fight scene was cringe worthy. The special effects were equally bad as well for many of the characters. The original Mortal Kombat(1995) continues to be the gold standard for video game movies, and that's rather sad 25 years later.

I haven't seen either but story isn't really the point of watching Mortal Kombat. Good writing can make the movie better, but the audience is there for the visual aspect moreso than anything else. There are plenty of good movies with bad stories.

I realize that. But even movies like Mortal Kombat need workable writing with some basis and plots without major continuity issues. And the main character (Cole Young) was a completely new madee up character that has never even been in the games at all.

Even if I were to overlook these flaws, a movie like this has got to have great fight scenes. But most of the fight scenes were severely lacking. Cutting back and forth between multiple character fights at the same time, basically only a couple clips of filler footage to set up the fatality scene. The first fight scene was fantastic between Sub Zero and Scorpion. The final fight scene was ok, but it felt like it should have simply been a Sub-Zero and Scorpion re-match instead of a Scorpion and Cole Young team up against Sub Zero. Team up fights actually happened pretty frequently in the movie, which also seems dumb considering it's based on 1v1 game.

Venom: Let there be Carnage 5/10

It had more of a Sony feel to it than an MCU feel. For the obvious reasons. Also, I got the feeling like they were trying too hard to be funny. And there’s the predictable plot “twists” that happen in most movies. It was very formulaic.

If you’re a fan of the Marvel comics or the superhero genre in general, you should watch it. If you’re not, don’t bother.

I was afraid of that. I'll still watch it, but I wasn't super impressed with the first one either. From the trailer of the second one, it seemed a lot more hokey, like the Sam Raimi Spiderman trilogy.

Getting my cheesy horror fling on. Scare package always fun, tales of Halloween is a must, and just watched a good campy B film from 86 called night of the creeps. All great fun horror films
@BadJerry20

Yeah I like both of those, have you watched The Mortuary Collection? It's an anthology, probably my favorite since Trick 'r Treat. The first story is meh but its meh for a reason, the rest are good and the wrap around story is solid too. Dude I love Night of the Creeps, good silly 80's horror fun.

The Mort collection was good. I watched that maybe last year? It’s on my list to watch again. This time I’m forcing my wife to watch these films w me. Last two we watched were Gravy which she actually laughed and and Satanic Panic. I loved Satanic Panic. Highly recommend. Gravy I’ve seen several times. Great as well

I really liked Satanic Panic too. I watched Gravy again about 2 months ago, still good as hell. Did you see Shudder just put up VHS94?

Yeah they have been getting a lot better. Superhost was pretty fun too, dependent on if you can handle the main girls weirdness. Lol The Host and Beach House were solid, Stay Out of the Attic and The Cleansing Hour were decent. Vicious Fun was well vicious fun. I wanted to like Psycho Goreman so much, and parts were what it should have been, but I desperately wanted to shove the little girls head into the garbage disposal. Lol Unpopular opinions from what I have seen online but I loathed Scare Me and After Midnight even though the latter had a pretty awesome creature design that they showed for 5 seconds. Damn that's a lot of words. Lol

I didn't like the first one, the second one was pretty solid I thought. I binged them and I ran out of steam and never finished the third one. Lol

Color Out of Space 7/10

It's Nick Cage meets H P Lovecraft so you need to know that going in. Obviously not a gigantic SE budget either but if you like weird sci fi you'll probably enjoy the watch.

Cage has been on a roll.

Prisoners of the Ghostland

It's a revival of epic proportions!
