Movies you've seen recently II

Growing up in a house with staunch southern Baptist parents, I was lucky to watch a Disney movie.

Kinda followed me into adulthood, I watch maybe 5 movies a year.

I was thinking while watching Jurassic Park the other day how great it would be to be able to see the films I saw as a kid again for the first time. The thought of being able to go back and see with fresh eyes those mid to late 80's and early to mid 90's movies like Top Gun, GHOSTBUSTERS, BTTF, Twister, ID4, TMNT, Due Hard, Forest Gump, Batman and on and on..

I’m trying to figure out the best way for my son (he’s only 7 months old, but not too early to plan important life events) to watch Star Wars. Do you do it in order of movie release or chronological order? And do we include all the spin off movies and TV shows?

Decisions decisions.

Flight of the Navigator

Watched it with my 3 YO. She was kinda into it, but they really screwed this movie up. It's 90 minutes long and it takes 50 minutes to get the kid in the space ship. Why did the space ship talk like pee wee herman?

Paul Reubens was the voice of the ship. It’s a great movie. I think it was one of the first Disney movies to have profanity.

June Again, 10, Amazon Prime, Rotten Tomatoes gave it 100%.
It is a movie for older adults and/or someone that has to deal with same or dementia.

Lightyear 7/10. Chris Evans does a good job and all the handwringing over a same sex relationship is silly.

Beavis and Butthead Do the Universe (Paramount+) is solid. My memory of Do America is weak, but I feel like this one was better. If you grew up on the show, you'll appreciate it. I don't think B&B are characters that are really cut out for the feature-length format. It's not even 90 minutes and it still felt a little long but all things considered, they did a pretty good job with it.

The Godfather Coda was OK. I am the biggest Godfather I and II fan, and I've never seen III because by all accounts it's terrible, and the clips I had seen did nothing to convince me otherwise. I had heard Coda (Paramount+) was a much better edit, so I checked it out.

The good included the mafia elements of the story and the way they built suspense and had extravagant sets. Andy Garcia is really good, and I think he was a complete unknown at the time (and kind of a risk to cast a Cuban as an Italian).

However, even the best version of this movie feels like a money grab. So many bad elements take you out of it...Sofia Coppola's acting is awful, the sound mixing is a distraction at some points, and WTF did we need a storyline about incest/statutory rape? It's ****ed up. I can't even tell if it's supposed to be viewed as some terrible thing. They just kinda go, "You shouldn't be doing that."

And they do sequel things that are beneath them, like uninspired nods to past scenes, locations, props, etc. The biggest sin I think was not paying for Robert Duvall to reprise the Tom Hagen role, and making Diane Keaton such a big part. I didn't need any of the Michael redemption tour with his religion or Kay. She's the least enjoyable aspect of the first two movies. So fkn boring.

Independence Day - 4.5/5

Independence Day: Resurgence - 4/5

Rewatched Resurgence for the first time since seeing it in theater and while I was disappointed in it originally. I have to say not really remembering what it was about. I really enjoyed it. It's just a solid a popcorn flick. Turn your brain off and enjoy it for what it is and not what it isn't.

Had ID4 never happened or had not been the blockbuster it became then I think this film would get more respect.

Also watched ID on ID. Dang near perfect. I know...not a serious film of any caliber. Lacking in various departments. But for a silly summer blockbuster, near perfect.

Still haven't watched the sequel. Too afraid after reading the reviews 😅 Maybe one day.

I just keep hearing about Everything Everywhere All at Once (think that's the name). Friends that are very cautious with their film stamps have both given it their FULL STAMP. So I will be watching asap. Excited to see it.

Lucky, 8, Watched on Tubi
Harry Dean Stanton stars. Plays a 90 year old. He's been around forever. You know him when you see him even if you don't know his name.
