'24 MS DL Kamarion Franklin (Ole Miss commit)

We "absorbed" them. More vague language from someone who doesn’t know.

It’s still 28 scholarships you can’t award whether they’re not used two years ago or they’re not used two years from now. If you have less spots you naturally have to be more selective with the ones you do have.

Y’all seem to think this is a "sky is falling" thing and it isn’t. Some of you froth at the mouth looking for any shred of negativity. I’m thrilled with the way Heup handled the NCAA stuff, and for the most part with the recruiting. But I don’t think under normal circumstances we’d get outbid by Auburn or even LSU for guys we want, and I’m not even saying Bates is one, Franklin maybe but I don’t care about them and I’m not bemoaning them going elsewhere.

But I’m telling you, I know some people down there. The NCAA stuff is not a huge deal but it’s not nothing either.

You seem to be under the misconception that the scholarship reductions are cumulative in some way. That each year the scholarships we have to give out is further reduced or that scholarships absorbed one year aren't then available the next year. You keep saying we're down a full recruiting class, but that's not how it works. The 18 scholarships that have been 'absorbed' are already free to be used again. Just look at our scholarship numbers. We're clearly not running at 72 scholarship athletes.

When people say the remaining 10 over 5 years is basically a slap on the wrist, it's because what that really means, is we're going to be operating at 82-83 max scholarships per year as opposed to 85. We can sign as many as we want. We aren't limited in new scholarships or recruits or transfers in any way except that the final number when the dust settles has to be 83.

Lol I’m amazed at how many here don’t get this.

We self imposed an 18 scholarship reduction. You can’t just say they’re "accounted for" and it magically goes away. The remaining 10 amount to 2 less per year over the next 5. People seem to think the 10 are all we had reduced and we voodooed the rest away somehow. Any way you slice it it’s 28 scholarships that can’t be used on players. It forces the staff to be a bit more selective.

It’s also hard to believe an $8 million fine isn’t felt when the entire recruiting budget is 3 million.

I’m not overly concerned about this stuff but to say it has no bearing is just naive.

The 18 retroactive scholarship reductions were literally just the naturally unfilled roster spots from 21/22. They weren’t really part of the punishment. It is just something both sides recognize to make the punishment look more severe. You can confidently say they had no impact on the team.

The future 10 scholarships just mean that, on average, we will have a maximum of 83 total scholarship players instead of 85 over the next 5 years. It is very rare to be at 85 and this will have a very minimal impact on roster mgmt. This may mean there are 1 or 2 flyers in total that we don’t take (like Larry Johnson), but the most likely impact is that walk-ons that typically get the extra scholarships won’t be getting them for the next few years.

Can't stand Freeze and they're spending big on recruits like A&M did a couple seasons ago...so I enjoy seeing them miss. Auburn is also traditionally more of a threat to UT in recruiting than Ole Miss, so them losing 5* recruits and it potentially slowing their progress on the field will make them a little less of a threat in recruiting as long as UT keeps taking care of business.

Yep, and I think the immediate play and the portal mitigates holes easier than the old days. Might not bring in stars but can fill significant shortcomings.

If you're going to tell someone they don't know, then you need to educate yourself first. 18 scholarships have already been accounted for and has nothing to do with the current team. Instead of 85 scholarship players, we roll with 83 for 5 years. Only people affected by this are your PWOs who generally get awarded a scholarship for staying with the program. Bates and Franklin have absolutely nothing to do with this. So it's definitely not what you are making this out to be.

What we imagined is WAY worse than what actually happened.
