'24 MS RB Daniel Hill

Using UT to enhance his NIL. UT needs to tell the kid to prove his sincere interest or get lost.
He's not rated high enough to be jockeying for a NIL bidding war. I think this kid has multiple people in his ear about where he should go and is genuinely torn on what to do. He had narrowed it down to USCe & Bama and had set a commitment date. I think he has genuine interest in us, and that's why he put off his commitment. That doesn't mean we land him, but a big win Saturday (with him in attendance) may help us with some of those external factors.

...and yet here we are with our coaching staff still pursuing this kid. What does that tell you?
that you never, ever, stop recruiting and they know it? We could have the all time class, nothing but 5 stars, generational players everywhere, and I would still expect them to be out there recruiting.

A kid could flip. someone gets injured, or has a family issue pop up and decide to stay closer to home, someone doesn't develop as much as they expected, or a new person develops more than they thought. At this point last year Arion Carter was just starting to show up on people's radars. Maybe you have more players than you expected hit the portal. maybe you lose a coach to a promotion and those position players want to follow him or at least consider other options.

always always always be recruiting. It got Dan Mullen fired despite only being a year removed from back to back east championships.

I think the Nico deal has labeled UT as a payer and players flirt with us to enhance their deals with their desired school. Especially kids who may have a handler.
I think generally kids now "flirt" to get interest from schools they have no real interest in. That includes UT but isn't limited to the Vols.

This is why I've consistently said it is unwise to constantly engage in bidding wars. For all we know, the staff may have known that some of the recruits they didn't get were just trying to play UT to bid up their offer from someone else. That may have been why they didn't bid them up like many here thought they should.

Like any other "market", this is going to work itself out over the next few years if left alone. Value estimates will become more accurate and enough programs will be burned by overrated players that they stop bidding guys up before they prove themselves. The big NILs paid to HS recruits will probably begin to moderate while the deals for quality portal players go up.

From Rivals:

Daniel Hill has been in the center of a recruiting battle led by Alabama and South Carolina for much of his recruitment. The Crimson Tide were the early leaders before the Gamecocks made a serious push from the spring and into the summer months.

Now, it appears that Alabama has regained some of that control. But a different program is seemingly squarely in the mix now: Tennessee. Hill officially visited Rocky Top earlier this fall as head coach Josh Heupel and running backs coach Jerry Mack make their push for the dynamic offensive weapon that is in the midst of an impressive senior campaign.

Alabama has pushed the right buttons in many ways while recruiting Hill. However, Tennessee, at this juncture, now appears to be the biggest threat in preventing the Mississippi State legacy from heading to Tuscaloosa for his collegiate career.

Seems like it would be advantageous to run up the price other programs have to pay for a recruit - less money for other recruits?

If a kid used UT to get more money from our rival fine, then play along and make them pay more. If they’re not interested but a high recruit it’s still good PR for us to have so many top recruits all over social media with us in their final 3,4,5 schools.

I don’t see the big hurt here. And very few of us have a reasonable guess as to what recruits are actually thinking.

I'm sure that happens. I'll admit I've done it in a way at estate auctions. But in a market like that one you aren't just running that bid up. You are running them all up. The next kid will think he's worth as much or more.

What happens when the price of something goes up too much? Demand falls and people look for good substitutes. That's what has to happen to bring sanity to NIL.

Love the point. Something to remember here is that teams will have different needs. We
May not value RBs next year while our rivals do.
NIL will allow a team to throw whatever they want to fill a need. I hope we go bonkers for transfers this year. Need some offensive lineman and some
Pass catchers. If Nico ain’t ready they better have a qb too.
