Dropping 8 into coverage only works if those 8 defenders know their assignments perfectly. That almost never happens in college b/c dropping 8 means you have back up or situational corners on the field. By definition these players aren’t physically good enough or don’t have a good enough grasp of the defensive concepts to be starters. Teams are literally removing starting caliber defensive players to bring subs on the field and hope they know enough.i saw ND drop 8 into coverage against OSU from about the 17 yard line of ND on 4th and 7 with about 28 seconds left, and thought..."Did Chavis go to ND?". Sure enough, there was a completion to the 2, OSU took its last time out and the rest is history. I just shook my head at the stupidity of that DC. lol
