My QB 180....

Simms is our guy. If for no other reason than the team seems to follow him already. It will be good for Bray and Nance to see that.

Agreed . We seriously need some Leadership ! P. Manning and Al Wilson are not "coming through the door"
So a "Simms" seems to be the right recipe for success. I believe the kid has a "chip" on his shoulder and plays like he has something to prove. I hope he PROVES it here in K-Town !!!

Wow eric, aren't you the same guy that said that QB wasn't a need position and that we'd only go after an elite prospect? And if we didn't get said elite prospect that we'd pass on a QB? How do you go from that mentality to saying we need to sign 2 QB's because a senior that wasn't going to see the field anyways left in the spring instead of staying through the fall? Over react much?

Easy. If Stephens stays, Bray redshirts, if Simms and Stephens don't get injured. Now, we burn a RS and need depth, so it's not an over reaction at all.

Going from saying we don't need one, but we might take one, to saying we need 2 after losing 1 is an over reaction. If nothing else all it does is stagger the 2 freshman that we got this year so that they don't overlap their entire careers. Not to mention that if Simms doesn't get hurt then it's entirely possible that Bray can keep his red shirt.

Before Stephens left I was of the mind that you take at 1 QB a year. I still stand by that, you take 1 QB even with Stephens leaving. Taking 1 QB this year will give us 4 QB's for the 11' season. Simms as a senior, Bray as a sophomore (assume he has to burn his red shirt) Nance as a RS Freshman, and then a true freshman from the '10 class. That's plenty of depth, and not even counting Lamaison wasting a scholarship.

Thing is, I know that we have Nance, but I think that he will be a clipboard QB his career. That's why we need 2, IMO.

Even if he is it's not that big of a deal. If Nance can't beat Bray out for the starting position, then he would only have his RS Senior season to be the guy. If he's a career clipboard holder like you fear then we'll have 3 other QB's that have been recruited to fight it out for the starting position (assuming we sign 1 QB per year). I'm still not seeing the pressing need to sign 2 QB's this year.

Depth is why. We need to sign 2 guys this season to provide some type of quality depth before Simms leaves in 2011. We are still behind in QB recruiting from the previous 3 years or so.

By the time that Simms leaves, we'll have Bray, Nance, a '10 recruit and an '11 recruit heading into the '12 season. Again, I don't see the pressing need of depth that requires us to sign 2 QB's this year. Especially not when we have so many other need positions to stock up on.

Juco Lamaison, Juco Simms, True Frosh Bray and Redshirt Frosh Nance is not quality depth. I agree with Eric, we need 2 more top flight guys.

So, we will have Bray as a starter, Nance as a backup (possibly), and a RS freshman as 3rd string or backup?? You really need one more guy in there to get some quality time with the coaches before the 2012 season. I would rather have 4 QBs, than 3 in '12 with Bray losing his redshirt.

Since you're so disparaging of having a RS Freshman as 3rd string or back up in '12, how does 2 RS Freshman make it any better? And you would have 4 QB's going into the '12 season with the signee from the '11 class. Obviously we just disagree on this topic and that's not going to change. I"d rather get the right QB this year and focus on more glaring needs like along both lines of scrimmage.

Because there is NO guarantee that ANY QB will ever workout. We have had more busts in the past 5 years at QB than any time in the previous 20 years or so. So, the more you get in here, quality wise, the better your chance is at finding someone who can win you ballgames.

the problem with this theory is that the original theory of Eric's was off Kilter. we have needed quality guys even before Nick Stephens left.

that was my point from an earlier thread, In Building great program, you dont slack on QB recruiting just cus you landed one 4 or 5* guy (Bray)

Teams like Ala, Texas, Oklahoma, USC, UF always look to add great QBs every yr no matter who they signed the previous yr. We have enough schollies, adding QBs wont hinder us from landing top Lineman

I still don't see how your mind was changed so drastically by Stephens leaving. We were going to have the same number of QB's after the fall regardless and you didn't feel the need to take even one then. We would have just had Simms, Bray, and Nance for the '11 season. If you feel like we need to take 2 QB's now, that's your opinion and that's fine by me. My original post was just to point out how strange it was that even though the numbers haven't really changed you feel the need to take 2 QB's now when you didn't even think we needed 1 before.

I'm not going to argue much with that at all Jay, but the fact that you have a possibility of 2 guys in the same class RS, was good, because then you aren't pressured to get that absolute top flight guy early, and can possibly get someone under the radar as the season goes on. Now, we don't have the luxury of doing that now. A QB losing 1 year of eligibility, as a freshman, is big in the QB recruiting ladder. We always need depth, but creating a log jam of unproven highly rated guys can cause you issues on the recruiting trail if your not careful, because there is just not a huge amount of quality SEC caliber QBs out there, and the one's you take better be able to co-exist.

I agree 100%. As I said earlier, I think we as fans have gotten used to not having quality depth at QB. I want a battle every year...an incumbent, a back up and two or three serious contenders. As you mentioned, USC under Carroll. If one of them transfers/goes PRO you just reload. It's been a problem for a while. Going one further, a top flight QB goes a long way in attracting linemen and other skill players.

Because Bray would have better been suited to RS, and that creates a better situation next season because it let's Bray develop at a better pace and gets him in the weight room more. So, you take that RS away, and possibly throw him in as a starter early, you create more of a need for quality backup, because your one injury away from the backup coming in. Bray is also a stick out there. So, a guy who would have been 3rd string this year, turns into possibly your starter this year.

Here's your depth chart going into 2012...
1. Bray (Junior)
2a. Nance (RS Sophomore)
2b. '11 recruit (RS Freshman)
3. '12 recruit (Freshman)

Here's mine for 2012....
1. Bray (Junior)
2a. Nance (RS Sophomore)
2b. '11 recruit (RS Freshman)
2c. '11 recruit (RS Freshman)
3. '12 recruit (Freshman)

Mine has more experience, and more possiblities, IF Bray were to get injured and Nance isn't up to par. At least, if we get 2, we have 2 QB's that have been in the system by then and not just 1.

More experience by adding a RS freshman? And that player will likely be around the same caliber as Nance...who you say is a career clipboard holder...so not really anymore possibilities....

We may take 2 qbs...but back to your op...Stephens departing does not completely change the qb recruiting this year...

Eric is absolutely right. Essentially, with Stephens’ exodus we’re losing 2 years of eligibility….Stephens in whatever role he might have played and Bray’s RS FR season. Heck, if Simms goes down, there’s no guarantee that Bray will hold up either. He’s rail then and bound to be frail compared to the competition. I would think Nance would be the emergency 3. If an injury to Simms occurs, then we better be prepared to burn both QB redshirts. We WANTED to have Bray redshirt. I didn’t really see eye to eye with Eric on not taking an elite QB (I feel you should aim high at QB every cycle) but he didn’t say we were ignoring the position. He stated that an elite QB was not a priority.

What Eric is now saying is that we need viable options. We need to be realistic…Nance was a deal sealer for Da’Rick….no one can convince me otherwise (I’ve even felt like he’s here to keep Da’Rick eligible). If Bray doesn’t work out in 2012, then where do we turn? I’d rather have a pool of young, highly touted QBs to evaluate and evolve than Nash Nance. It’s a numbers game and we need all the options we can get. Bring in a guy like Worley or LeMay and then a kid like Rivers. You’ve got your elite QB and a 4* project with a lot of upside.
