My QB 180....

Kudos to Dooley for making the call. I'm sure he was aware of the possible consequences.

They have been enamored with Simms since his arrival, and he has been the most accurate QB on the team. The only thing they don't like is his throwing motion.

In reality all of the eggs have been in Bray's basket (in regards to the future of the position) since he signed on the dotted line.

What the Vols are going to need from the QB position more than anything else over the next two years is mental toughness.

Well, here we are, we have two QBs that will give us a chance to win, and both have ZERO experience in the SEC, and one is just out of HS. Tyler's hope of a RS season is gone now, so we have to sign at least 2 QBs for the 2011 class. Stephens leaving completely changed their plans of probably when and who they would recruit as a QB this year. We are not going to go dual-threat, unless they have good pocket presents (I know how to spell, just going for the lulz) and a live arm. We are also going to recruit a Top of the Class kind of guy, and I don't mean the recruiting class. We want a QB that is smart and a natural leader. That is what we have been missing since Casey Clausen, a natural leader at QB. So, as we move forward, I would say your going to hear a lot more about QBs being recruited in this class.

Really, what about Eric Ainge??

Ainge wasn't that good, IMO. He was a product of quick throws and 1 or 2 reads. We haven't had a good QB since Casey.

Ainge was a good QB and the NFL agreed. Ainge with Clausen's weapons would have been a treat to watch. I like Casey too. I think there was a drop in the other skill positions while Ainge was QB. It could also be argued that if Cutcliffe had coached Clausen instead of Sanders he would have been better.

To your original point, your change of mind is probably correct. The redshirt year for Bray would have made QB much less of a priority.

I haven't read through all the posts so I apologize if this has already been covered...

But...if I were a QB and I saw the weapons (WR & RB's specifically) that have been recruited over the last two years here I would be very keen on giving serious consideration to UT.
Too, the fact that we have a VERY young and talented OL is a HUGE positive IMO. Think about it; if we sign Miller, Worley (sp?), Rivers, etc. they'll likely RS for a year then possibly be depth as a RS Freshman, meaning by the time they play they'll be behind the most experienced OL's in the SEC, maybe even the country.

I realize that that's thinking outside the box and probably with a shade of orange too, but this team is not in dire straights. Granted, we're facing a very steep hill to climb back into the SEC elite but two top-10 classes in a row is a a great foundation for future potential.

Now its up to CDD & co. to "coach em up" and avoid non-qualifiers and attrition as much as possible. UT can't afford to gamble on [many] recruits with possible academic issues or off the field problems. If Dooley wants to re-build UT into an elite program he has to put special emphasis on GPA & EE's.

IMO, Worley is our best shot at a QB that will be highly rated. If we don't land him, we probably won't sign a QB, IMO, and if we do it's not going to be someone that has a ton of offers.

Maybe we were discussing a different post of Eric's about QB's, but this is the one I was thinking of when I saw him say an elite or don't sign one. Which is the opposite of what was being claimed in this thread.

Yea Casey "Throw my teammates under the bus" Clausen is definitely the kind of leadership we need.

How about the CC that beat the Gators twice at the Swamp?

I'll take that kind of leader...

So was Peyton Manning not a great leader because he did not beat the Gators? Your logic doesn't make much sense. A win or two does not make you a good leader.

Casey Clausen was tough and a helluva competitor. His record on the road in SEC games was pretty impressive from what I remember. Was he cocky? Sure, but he was a lot better than some people give him credit for.

Casey Clausen was a beast, BRB making Bama look stupid on 4th and 19.

Came in ready to play as a freshman. His first road loss was at Auburn in his senior year. He would have won that game if we did not waste the first half trying to run and fell behind by 21. Had two 10 win seasons and tied the record for most Td passes in a game. Burney Veasey was wide open when he dropped the record breaker with two hands! He also had a propensity for beating Florida (2-1) and Alabama (3-1). Good college Qb with command of the game. Having no legit back plus his top 3 targets (DS, KW, JW) staying hurt and or leaving early stunted his numbers the last two years. Still finished 2nd in most passing stats and first in several of them. He wasn't too shabby.
