My thoughts on Cuonzo Martin

Yea, we're bring back almost 10 pts per game from last season. No excuse at all for Martin not to have a top 25 team.

You can't have it both ways. Out of one side of your mouths you say CCM is a good coach with a good resume. Then out of the other side you say he has zero
players to work with. If he is going to last here then he is going to have to coach the talent he can get.
I hate to say it again, but, we are not a basketball mecca with a long list of final fours behind us.

I'm not sure I have ever said he was a good coach with a good resume. I have said and will continue to say that he is our coach and we should support him and hope that he does well, not attack him and declare that we will never be competitive in basketball again.

Oh, I had forgot about the final four talent Pearl inherited
when he got here. I was thinkling Buzz only won 14 games the year before and the teams he beat were mostly give me's that everyone schedules to improve their won/loss numbers. We have talent on this team so
let's see if Martin can coach it. I hope he can.

Buzz left the program exponentially better than Bruce did.

It's not even remotely close.

I don't give a damn what Bruce Pearl inherited, everyone knows Buzz Peterson was a joke, I'm talking about what the "great one" left CCM. And to the bolded statement, no we absolutely don't...

As far as the roster, I agree 100%. Pearl helped facilitate the new facilities, so I give him credit for that.

How is that "having it both ways?" He's a good coach inheriting a bad team...that doesn't contradict itself at all...

No doubt he sold the program. I've never denied that.

How long does it take to turn a basketball roster around? This might deserve it's own thread.

I want to know how long we have to blame Bruce if things go south.

Pearl deserves every bit of the criticism he's receiving for this awful roster he left CCM. At the same time, if CCM can't get things turned around in the next few seasons and bring in talent to return to the tournament and advance in it like we have been doing, he'll be criticized by a lot of people within our fanbase and deservedly so.

However, you and all of the other blind Pearl supporters need to accept the fact that the man deserved to be fired and it's time to move on and support the new coach of the UT men's basketball program. Bottom line, really...

Solid post. Cuonzo deserves his 2-3 year evaluation period before we throw him under the bus. The biggest concern seems to be with recruiting. People are upset that we only pulled in one top 100 recruit for 2011. Yeah, I would be upset too if Cuonzo had been recruiting for UT for the past year or two, but he got us bodies that we need in 4 months. IMO, he did a fine job (not outstanding by any means, but not bad).

I will question his tactics after he gets at least one recruiting cycle at UT under his belt.

I hate Calipari as much as any Vol fan, but it's pretty hard to say he's nothing special with the way he pumps elite college players into the NBA.

He actually did very little of it until he got to Kentucky.

You don't know that it's awful. This is what kills me. People making absurd claims without the first d** clue. Let's see what Martin does with Golden, McRae, Hall, Maymon and Woolridge. By all accounts from their high school ratings, this is a better group than the one Pearl inherited.

Yeah, I see several Lofton's and Smith's in this group--top notch roster.

I believe Pearl's system at the time helped Smith become a player and was a factor in his success. Freelance, out of control, or whatever you want to call it, it worked.
J Smith is not the same impact player at UT under the former regimes, especially Buzz and Oneal. I don't know about CCM yet, but if it's a more disciplined style, Smith wouldn't be the same player. I believe he was a walkon and Lofton (my favorite vol of all time) wasn't heavily recruited either. So if you go by Rivals rankings, this team is as loaded, if not more loaded with basketball talent with the 3 and 4 star players on the roster.
I just haven't seen the basketball skills of talented players. Maybe it's the opposite of J Smith, and their talents come out in a more disciplined system. I hope so.

None of which means s***. Who would you take, J. Smith and Lofton or Golden and Tatum? Give me a damn break.

Well at least your hindsight is 20/20. Lofton And Smith were ranked lower than McRae and Golden in high school.
Nobody wanted Lofton, that's how we got him. And Smith was a walk on.

Really? I don't think anyone knew that Lofton wasn't highly recruited. Thanks for this breaking news.

To argue Pearl left this roster in good shape is absolutely asinine. I'm not talking about their high school rankings, I'm talking about what they've proven on the court. Plain and simple.
