My thoughts on Cuonzo Martin

To argue Pearl left this roster in good shape is absolutely asinine. I'm not talking about their high school rankings, I'm talking about what they've proven on the court. Plain and simple.

I believe Pearl's system at the time helped Smith become a player and was a factor in his success. Freelance, out of control, or whatever you want to call it, it worked.
J Smith is not the same impact player at UT under the former regimes, especially Buzz and Oneal. I don't know about CCM yet, but if it's a more disciplined style, Smith wouldn't be the same player. I believe he was a walkon and Lofton (my favorite vol of all time) wasn't heavily recruited either. So if you go by Rivals rankings, this team is as loaded, if not more loaded with basketball talent with the 3 and 4 star players on the roster.
I just haven't seen the basketball skills of talented players. Maybe it's the opposite of J Smith, and their talents come out in a more disciplined system. I hope so.

If you base the roster on rivals rankings, I would have to agree that this roster is better than the one Pearl inherited. Based on performance so far, they are not as good as the roster Pearl inherited. I think J Smith would have worked out fine playing any style. I hope Martin will run a system that will maximize the talent that is on this roster. Only time will tell.

This team has some of the most 4 stars that have proved nothing on the court ever.. Well maybe not ever, but you get where I am going

No, that's not it. It's the fact that Pearl was not a good talent evaluator.

Not a good evaluator for his system over the last couple of years, I agree. However, I believe he had a top 10 recruiting class his last year, and he wasn't the evaluator that ranked those players.

Pearl, as much as I liked his enthusiasm for UT, lost his job because he was a liar!! Get over it and try and give CCM a chance. You may be pleasantly suprised and if not, it is not like UT has no experience in hiring basketball coaches. All the gloom and doom from the people who can not admit that Pearl screwed himself is just stupidity. I think, deep inside, those people are hoping things are really bad this year so they can say, if only Bruce were here it would have been better. CCM gets at least 2 full recruiting classes before we can say yea or nay! Go Vols.

My thoughts are I respect the position of the head basketball coach at the University of Tennessee.

I see little in the past, which is the best predictor of the future to get excited about the program with Martin as the leader.

I hope he proves me wrong.

Glad to see you discount all basketball pre 1990.

I don’t understand your reply but to clarify my post I’m not referring to Tennessee’s basketball program rather Martins track record….as a 1974 graduate and season ticket holder for over 30 years I consider myself a supporter and fan but I’m also an realist given to critical thinking….

My opinion is also influenced by intangibles such as my ‘take’ on his lack of effective communication skills…I have some assumptions regarding leadership, recruiting, etc but will withhold expressing those until I have a larger body of work to consider…

I think the past here is irrelevant. We have great facilities now, and we have what it takes to compete. We haven't had that in the past.

TBA must have been built while Pearl was here, oh wait.
Good facilities doesn't bring in top notch ballplayers, winning coaches do. Sounds like your usual blarney while
trying to cover your a$$.

The facilities are bigger of a deal than you may think. It is a factor that a (virtually) no-name coach that can use this to his advantage, especially with the state we're in.

Apparently you were living under a rock when TBA was completely renovated and a new practice facility was built. Obviously, great facilities have nothing to do with recruits committing to a school. Wonder why we even bother showing our facilities to recruits?
