Name Your Top 5 Drivers Talent Wise

After he wins this year after finally getting good equipment, you haters will change your minds.

if he was the most talented driver he could have done more with what he had. That's proof alone that he doesn't belong in this conversation.

I'll make a list because I'm trying as hard as I can to get interested in NASCAR again. Attack it if you want, I may be wrong about some people due to my lack of interest over the past 8 years or so. I am shocked that Biffle and Kenseth aren't getting more pub as far as talent goes.

1. Tony Stewart
2. Jeff Gordon
3. Jimmie Johnson
4. Matt Kenseth
5. Greg Biffle/Robby Gordon

I listed Kenseth and had Biffle down at first, then changed it, probably should have left him in. I've heard other drivers past & present say he has excellent car control.

Robby has done alot more racing than most Cup regulars, and been successful in different arenas of racing than most Cup regulars have dabbled in.

Doozer just hates him because he isn't from the south, about the same reason he hates Kenseth for.

this is really stupid. especially the last part.

Robby Gordon is a great driver (million dollar talent) but one of the stupidest people (5 cent head) to ever walk the Earth. therefore, when you compare what he could have done if he wasn't an idiot against what he should have done (with his talent), he is a bust.

i didn't know Kurt Busch was from the South, because i hate all drivers who aren't.

R. Gordon started out as a spoiled brat and has never got over it.

Kurt is from the south side of Vegas :)

I have driven by the Kulwicki crash site many times. It is only a mile from my old business office. I just only now realized my ardor for NASCAR begain its decline at that time. For me "the music died" that day. Not that the crash was the fault of NASCAR, but that there will never be a chance for anyone else to accomplish what he did with the changes that have been made by NASCAR. For that I do blame them. It's not a case of an old school guy not wanting to see change, it's being able to recognize that the sport is the worse for eliminating the "little Guy". Think about all the small teams that have folded and are about to fold. Most helped build NASCAR from a regional sport to the Internationally followed sport it is today. Mark this down, it won't be long before there are only 10-12 team owners, and there is something about that that deeply concerns me. I do believe that many other long time fans have left because of this.

Gant was the leader of the "Alabama Gang" him and big Allison....Kuwicki was my hero man, loved that guy....Davy Allison had the potential to be the best Nascar had ever seen. Such a shame he was called up so young. Don't know if we get those type of races ever again....

Hit the nail on the head.

I'll add to this. One reason, IMO, that NASCAR had/have such a huge following is that people could relate to it.

Anybody with some mechanical sense and a big block motor with a 4 barrel carburetor could go and tinker with it and relate to the NASCAR mechanics/drivers.

Now those same people can't relate.

Hate to be picking nits, but I never heard of Handsome Harry being in the Alabama gang. He is from Taylorsville, NC if memory serves. The original Gang was Bobby & Donnie Allison and Red Farmer, with an honorary member Friday Hassler of Chattanooga. They got the name driving Modifieds around the southeast, primarily in Florida. They raced at Bristol when my dad's car was running there Saturday nights. They absolutely creamed the local guys. Later Neal Bonnet, Davey and a guy my memory is going blank on were added. He raced BGN with some success, but was a bust in Cup. Another driver from Alabama was Jimmy "smut" Means, but he never was considered one of the gang as I remember.

The thread title doesn't say NASCAR drivers so I'll add:

Aryton Senna
Michael Schumacher
Mario Andretti
Juan Fangio
Jackie Stewart

In that case, I'd like to add Luke Duke, Speed Racer, Burt Reynolds, Steve McQueen and Kenny Rogers for consideration.

You might consider AJ Foyt on that list, won in every type of car but F-1, only because he never drove one. How about Jimmy Clark? Many consider him one of 3 best.
