Names of some obscure Tennessee Quarterbacks through the years? Who was the best?

He should have been obscure....untill those stinky, lying, cheating bammers broke Tony.

Sugar bowl MVP erased all obsurity tho. He became a Tennessee legend in half a season.

A feel good story, without a doubt. A Tennessee Legend, not sure I can ride with that.

Obviously not a UT backup but Frank Reich...a career bench QB behind Jim Kelley that could have started anywhere... Bills were down 37-0 to the Oilers (Titans) at half. Dude came in and blew up the scoreboard and won.

He was smarter than most starters realizing clipboards, hand signals, and potential, paid really well and gave you the best seat in the house to watch a game all without forfeiting your body and health.

Dude.... Obscure TENNESSEE quarterback. Stay focused buddy.

Darryl Dickey...just sayin'

Amazing story about Darryl Dickey. A year after leading UT to the Sugar bowl win vs Miami and a #4 national ranking, he was still on campus after his eligibility ran out. He was on a football intramural team which lost the championship to the "Wild Turkeys" after he threw 4 interceptions. True story as I was right there. Go figure.

Gary Valbuena, California kid, backed up Condredge Holloway in the early 70's. Pretty good arm. Threw a costly pick late in the 73 Ga game which started Bill Battle's downfall.

Sterling Hinton, Jimmy Streeter, Alan Cockrell

Didn't Hinton start the '89 season as the starting qb?

Cockrell was a starter also, but was more known for being a baseball player.

Darryl Dickey ranks at the top of back-up qb's.

Legend may be a stretch...He's on alot of walls in print with Powell tho.

I can go with legend. He is a legend in the fact that as a backup QB, he came in and finished the season out strong and then beat Miami in the Sugar Bowl.

He is not a legendary TN QB, but since he only became a starter due to injury, I'd say legend as a backup suits the situation.

Had Robinson not gotten hurt. Most would probably not even remember Dickey.

Henton started the 89 season up until the alabama game. Andy Kelly started from then on. Cockrill also was a three year starter. Blew his knee out during his true freshman season, left for the major's after his jr year. To. Robinson was his backup and became the starter when Cockrill left early for baseball

If Tony hadnt gotten hurt very few would even know that Doug Dickey's son even attended UT.

May not be sure on how to label him but I think we can all agree that we're happy as heck he was a Vol.

Yes both Hinton and Cockrell started at different times. And yes Cockrell also played baseball and not a ton of football... and that's what makes him obscure which is what this thread is about. This thread asked for obscure Tenneessee quarterbacks and who were the best ones? Nothing about backups. Just recalling a few I remembered per the thread subject.

Sorry to get off topic a little, but there was a punter named Sammy Frogg who will forever go down as one of my favorite Vols. In the 2000 Arkansas game me and a couple of friends sat 6 rows back, right behind the TN bench and Frogg was punting into the net. He hit about 10 in a row that would hit the net, bounce back and hit the top crossbar, then bounce back again, hitting him right square in the helmet, between his eyes. Our whole section kept cheering him on and it sure was a hoot (the game was like 63-20, so it wasn't much fun after the first half). Ahhh, good times for sure.
Just though I'd share.

Oh, and INB4 "Cool story, bro"!

With all the Legends that have passed through the T on gameday at TN, the SugarVols game is still my all time favorite game. Watched it again just the other night. Funny thing is, as games go, there have been many better played games. That one is just the ultimate in feel good games to me though.

Jim Maxwell, Gary Valbuena, Jeff Olzewski, and Steve Alatorre come to mind as obsecure QBs who had at least one day in the sun while at UT.

You are correct. I don't know why I was thinking of back-ups only.

Hinton would certainly fit the bill, then.

Wasn't Cockrell a 3 year starter? He started in front of To. robinsopn for 2 years.

I know, he beat my team during the regular season. :(

I always liked Moses Collins. My buddy always use to yell, "Put Moses in, he will lead us to the promised land!".

I watched that game on YouTube about a month ago. The game was posted by a Canes fan and included the pre and post game footage from the Miami media. The pre game interviews and cockiness compared to the post game interviews and sorrow from the Miami faithful was funny as hell! With Tony Robinson that team might have been the best in the country. They manhandled #1 Auburn if I remember correctly. I'll admit, my memory isn't all that.

But as much as I loved the Sugar Bowl win...Miracle at South Bend does it for me. Not a finer bunch of *******s to see butthurt than ND IMO.
