Names of some obscure Tennessee Quarterbacks through the years? Who was the best?

I watched that game on YouTube about a month ago. The game was posted by a Canes fan and included the pre and post game footage from the Miami media. The pre game interviews and cockiness compared to the post game interviews and sorrow from the Miami faithful was funny as hell! With Tony Robinson that team might have been the best in the country. They manhandled #1 Auburn if I remember correctly. I'll admit, my memory isn't all that.

But as much as I loved the Sugar Bowl win...Miracle at South Bend does it for me. Not a finer bunch of *******s to see butthurt than ND IMO.

That was the same one I watched. The ND game is my VERY close second. I hate ND with a passion. Always have. Always will.

He wasnt a back up but ANDY KELLEY was a heck of a QB he would always have that one pass in every game that would cost us most of the time, then he would hit 14 out 15.

Really liked Kelley but you're right...he had a tendency to go color blind.

Yeah, 1990 Notre Dame comes to mind. He was killin it til he went to the well one too many times and threw the pick that sealed the loss.

Pat Ryan

His best years were in the NFL as a back up with the Jets I think. Never did much here on The Hill nor in the NFL but he lasted for a long time in the pros.

Gary Valbuena, California kid, backed up Condredge Holloway in the early 70's. Pretty good arm. Threw a costly pick late in the 73 Ga game which started Bill Battle's downfall.

Battle's miscommunication with Vol punter Nneil Clabo on fake punt cost that game and eventually his career.

Henton started the 89 season up until the alabama game. Andy Kelly started from then on. Cockrill also was a three year starter. Blew his knee out during his true freshman season, left for the major's after his jr year. To. Robinson was his backup and became the starter when Cockrill left early for baseball
Getting blasted with a stadium seat back when leaving the field after a tough loss to 'ole Miss pretty much sealed the deal on his BB career:)

I guess the best would probably be Pat Ryan. He backed up Randy Wallace in the mid 70s. I don't think he ever started (could be wrong about that), but he had a pretty long career with the Jets.

Nice get. Randy "freakin" Wallace was the first UT QB I ever pulled for as a young boy after my parents first introduced me to John Ward on the radio and Big Orange football. Thanks for the memory there Blood.

It was a terrible call (fake punt late in the game). UT was on a roll before that - one more score puts the game out of reach because Ga had no passing game whatsover. I was at the game and remember thinking when Valbuena threw the interception , "hope this doesn't give Ga momentum".

Jimmy Maxwell 3rd string QB who took us to some great victories in early 70's.
I had a class with Maxwell in the fall of 71 when he became our QB. Like you said, he was a 3rd stringer who became the starter after we turned it over about 8 times and lost to Alabama.

Maxwell was a 5th year senior, who rarely if ever played. I am not sure if he played before then. Anyway, when he became the starter, Tennessee's record was 3-2.Tennessee won the last 6 regular season games and the bowl game with Maxwell at the helm. He retired undefeated as a starter with a 7-0 record. We finished out with a 10-2 record that year.

As I remember Maxwell, he was a good game manager who only threw about 15 times a game and completed about half of them. His story is very similar to Daryl Dickey's. Not a great talent, no great passing skills, no fantastic arm, but a winner, who took care of the ball, and didn't make many mistakes. A team player and a leader. Something we haven't had lately.

You're welcome. That was about the same time I started following the Vols too.

Amazing story about Darryl Dickey. A year after leading UT to the Sugar bowl win vs Miami and a #4 national ranking, he was still on campus after his eligibility ran out. He was on a football intramural team which lost the championship to the "Wild Turkeys" after he threw 4 interceptions. True story as I was right there. Go figure.

Simple too much "wild Turkey"

James Banks....(or was it Blanks?)...the kid from Indy

My god, I remember watching the actual show when he chose UT. It wasn't your prime time ESPN fluff like you see now. It was some channel (CSS maybe?), I think Tom Lemming was on the show. Because He kept saying Fulmer was the best recruiter in the nation. Well bottom line...I remember thinking "this kids gonna win us a NC"!!! Well, the rest is history.
