Wondering what thoughts were on this. Nashville is holding an election today to decide if English should be the only language used by the city government.

I have received post cards in the mail for vote no which is to allow the government to use other languages. They make the point that it would cost tax payers in court costs, over civil rights lawsuits and it would scare businesses away from Nashville.

Vote yes is saying that it would force people to learn English faster and that we live in America and shouldn't have to learn Spanish to live in Nashville.

Knowing Nashville, even just a little bit, I'd be pretty stunned if it didn't pass.

The fact that this come to a vote is just ridiculous.

Pretty sure there were a lot of other non-English speaking immigrants into this country that learned English, can't see why Hispanics should be different.

These lawsuits would come eventually anyway. Just like they have in New York and other places to provide services in other languages, the tax payers pay to provide those services on an annual basis.

My take is that if you plan on living in another country why would you expect services to be provided to you in any language other than the language used in that country?

I find it funny that the groups sending these post cards warning of lawsuits are probably the same groups that will be filing these lawsuits against the city.

Sad thing about it is German and Japanese students are learning English fluently, as a second language, and they know it better than most English-only speaking citizens here.

First and foremost: Can we please teach, encourage and enforce proper speaking of our own language first?

That was my exact thought. Also, maybe (though probably not) it will drive illegals out of Nashville if they don't cater to their every need.

As for driving business owned by non english speakers out of Nashville, I think it might be a good thing. All you have to do is drive down Nolensville or Murfreesboro Rd and you will see what those businesses and the influx of non english speaking immigrants, both illegal and legal have done to the area.

No, because in order to teach proper English a teacher would have to insist on the students speaking proper English at all times. Those that do not do well would open the school system to lawsuits and possible cuts in funding for their lack of performance. Sad but it is the nature of the climate we live in today.

Its a joke. If you didn't know better you'd think you were in mexico. The jack in the box on nolensville road used to, might still have anywhere from 20 to 30 mexicans standing outside just waiting for someone to drive up and say they have work for the day. A poor man's labor ready.

There are two different issues here.

First, any person who wants to function in our society needs to learn English for their own success. That's flippin obvious.

But second, passing laws like this is just the majority showing the minority its collective ass and saying "kiss it." It does no good, other than to rile people up and antagonize others. I guarantee you that if it passes not one single person will go, "Well, better go out and learn me some English."

My grandparents lived maybe a half a mile away from there. 8 to 10 years ago that neighborhood was pretty decent. Now you have Brown Pride gang graffiti everywhere. Now you drive through there and see tweekers, prostitutes and drug dealers in the open.

What it does say is that if you want to come here and transplant your culture there are better places for you. If you want to learn the culture and fuse it with your own then we welcome you.

There is another factor here not mentioned often enough. There are elements of our society that don't want them to be educated or learn English so they can be exploited. If they are educated and speak the language they will be less likely to be taken advantage of.

The majority? You do realize that America is, always has been, and always will be a melting pot of languages? Why cut the Hispanics a break? Why give them preferential treatment while ignoring the recent immigrants from other linguistic backgrounds?

Or... should we have an instructor for everyone because we should have a "Leave No Immigrant Behind" education policy?

Don't tell liberals that. It makes too much sense.

If you live in America, learn English. I hope Nashville passes this overwhelmingly, so that more cities will do this in the future.

Ah, yes, the "we are doing it for their own good" theory.

Please.

First, and I repeat, anyone who wants to succed in this country knows full well that they need to learn English. A law stating that does not change anything.

Second, your analogizing the Hispanic popul;ation to other groups, as you put it, "from other linagustic backgrounds" is a joke. You know full well that no other group of that size comes in with a native tongue. The Hispanic situation is totally different than any other and the analogy is a very poor one.

Third, I am not familiar with this law you speak of whereby every Hispanic student gets his own tutor. Can you provide a link? Or, more likely, this is just some sort of made-up problem designed to delude the feeble minded into thinking that their tax dollars are going to an army of Spanish speaking tutors.

I am as certain that Nashville will pass it as I am that no other City gives a crap what Nashville does on this issue. Which is to say 100 %.

My ancestors came over here and learned English. Otherwise I'd be typing in German right now. I don't understand what is so hard about learning English. Most hispanics have already broken our laws by coming here illegally; the least they can do is learn our language.
