Nashville to vote on English only today

Same with conservatives. I know many principled folks who oppose abortion but who also support revising tax policy to increase taxes on the wealthy. I know many people who support capital punishment, but who resist religion in the schools.

Point is, as people (hopefully) become better educated, the parties lose their ability to label us all, on either side. That's why I cringe when some fool on the distant left purports to spoeak for all Democrats. Similarly, it drives me nuts when people like joevol try to cast a sweeping net over all "liberals" and pretend that he can capture the perspective of all of us with a carefully selected quote.

Guys like Hannity have made a career doing exactly that and its disgraceful that so many people leap to the conclusion he would ask.

give me proof that i'm wrong, you liberals do believe the same, the major majority of libs are pro abortion, higher taxes, more government, more welfare. that is the modern liberal. your parties leadership are all extreme leftist who believe the forementioned. yes i am acurate when describe you libs.

Buenos dias ya'll. A silly referendum was defeated and, as expected, local "progressives" now think Nashville is in lockstep with Berkeley and all those who publicly suported the measure will be branded racists for eternity, or until they move to a suburban county, whichever occurs first.

No need, unlike many of our Hispanic immigrants they actually have a desire to learn the English language.

Actually, I completely confess my surprise by the outcome. I was way wrong and did not give the City's voters enough credit.

To me, it was pretty obviously a waste of time and resources and just a rub-your-nose-in-it kind of an exercise. To their credit, the voters overall got it and rejected the tired politics of false patriotism in favor of a recognition that the World is changing and that, if we want to remain a leader and prosper, we need to be a bit more tolerant and encoruage people to learn English, rather than condemn them for getting here without ESL training beforehand.

Kudos to the City of Nashville and I feel badly for having underestimated you.

If we are honest about it I think we can all agree this was aimed at illegal immigrants and the growing problem we have in Nashville. This measure would do little to curb the growing population other than send a message that Nashville is not pleased, which would mean nothing to those that broke our laws coming here. It was in the end pretty meaningless.

If they want to do some good they need to sit down and propose a plan that would push illegals out of Nashville and Tennessee. Every single job is important to people in Tennessee given all the layoffs we have seen over the past six months.

No doubt this English-only thing is a proxy for illegal immigration. I am all for curbing illegal immigration and hope that local, state, and federal governments can come up with an efficient manner to do so. But these kinds of proposals do nothing but distract from that very real issue.

The recession is doing a good bit to curb illegal immigration. MS13 is doing their part as well.

True the recession has curbed new immigration. I haven't seen any stats on illegals already in the US leaving though.

What effect has MS13 had on illegal immigration?

did they pass it? if they did, they shouldn't be required spend millions on spanish forms, interpreters, etc.. from an economic standpoint it will be good. plus, think of all the tudors that will get jobs to help them study English. that in turn will help them get better jobs. it's a win-win situation.

of course it will take some responsibility on the mexican's part to study and learn. i know that whole self accountability and responsibility is what liberals hate.

They were, and are still, a horrendous problem in DC.

Though there is a discernable difference inbetween the originals from El Salvador and the kids they've recruited...

They run a very much large-scale human trafficking operation.

They run a very much large-scale human trafficking operation.

So how did they help to slow down immigration?

Or was the original poster saying less demand for jobs here means they are smuggling fewer people in?

I don't know what role they've had in the stemming of illegal immigration, but I do know they run an enormous trafficking ring.
