Nathan Peterman - think he can bounce back?

Ratings: Rivals 4* No. 10 pro-style quarterback, Scout 3* No. 18 quarterback, ESPN 3* No. 39 quarterback, 247 3* No. 15 pro-style quarterback. Chose UT over UCONN, Cincinnati, Florida, Florida State, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Florida International [note: Scout has him with Florida and FSU offers. Miami, South Florida and Nebraska called to gauge his interest in the past month].

STRENGTHS: His mechanics are definitely drastically improved from his junior season. He camped at UT, and coaches loved the way he had re-tooled his dropback and throwing motion, which earned him an offer. From his film, I'm very impressed with him reading through his progressions and giving his receivers time to get open. His arm strength was raved about in the Offense-Defense All-Star game in which he recently participated, earning him "best arm strength" and coaches talked about how well he threw the deep ball and outs. Also, a lot like Tyler Bray, he weaves very well away from pressure. His mechanics are much better, too, than they were. He now holds the ball high and looks over defenses better. He is a mid-term enrollee, which greatly helped Bray and Justin Worley the past two years. Peterman was an academic All-American and is a student of the game, so he will be able to come in and learn the offense. Won Offense Defense Scholar Athlete of the Year Award.

NEEDS WORK: I'm still not in love with his release point, and that will need some work once he gets to practicing. Also, though 6-foot-2 is plenty tall enough, he's on the low end of that [looks like 6-1 to me] and still a bit wiry. He needs some time in the weight room to fill out. Though he isn't the most mobile quarterback, he does enough in the pocket where that's not a weakness. He appears a bit of a gunslinger, which is good in the sense that he's not timid. He just needs to harness it well.

CREDENTIALS: He earned a camp offer at UT, loved it and committed shortly thereafter. Though he wasn't necessarily well-known prior to that, he had a standout senior season, leading Bartram Trail to its first ever state championship game appearance, and he received a big boost in Rivals' rankings. Other services have discussed moving him up though he's still a three-star everywhere else. As a junior, he earned second Team All-First Coast by Florida Times-Union. He threw for 2,016 yards and 20 touchdowns, with only six picks. This past year, he threw for 36 touchdowns and 2,940 yards before losing to No. 2 Armwood. According to Rivals:

"Mauk and Peterman are both accurate passers who can sling the ball around," said Offense-Defense Director of Player Personnel Josh Buchanan, "Mauk compares to Chase Daniel while Peterman's accuracy will make him a hard player to keep off the field at UT."

OPTIMISTIC CEILING: I really like Peterman, and after his senior film came out, it's obvious to see why UT coaches loved him so much and offered him so early. He was a scouting gem and easily the best quarterback in the state of Florida this year. Peterman has two qualities I LOVE in young signal-callers -- No. 1 he's fearless and No. 2 he is very intelligent. That sounds a lot like Worley, but even though Worley has two inches on him, Peterman's skill set is probably better. I am very excited about him at UT, and I believe he'll battle Worley for the starting spot once Bray's playing days are done.

Personally, I think Peterman has the tools but he wasn't able to put it together even in back up situations. He was not impressive in any of his outings even in mop up duty. That being said, experience is the best trainer. He got valuable PT to where he could be in a position to guide UT next season. Same for Worley and Dobbs. More so for Dobbs though as Worley already had some valuable PT going back to his freshman year.

For all 3 of them, it was PT in CBJs system that added the experience value more than anything.

With the team having a year in the system under their belts, all phases of the game should be more efficient going into next season. This will help each QB be more comfortable in CBJs system. Just having receivers that know what they are doing will help.

Look for improvement on offense even with a whole new line moving into the starting role.

I wouldn't be surprised with any of the 4 coming out on top come fall. I do think Worley will be given the first shot if no one really runs away with the competition.

He can take the job if he has the ability. The guys that don't win the QB jobs will lose to someone better. Butch can and the OC can pick the right guy. They had the right guy picked last year of whom we had available to play. JMO I think Ferguson is gonna be the guy that wins the job.

Nathan could possibly contribute on a team not running the read option, but I don't see him being feared by oposing SEC teams, do you?

Peterman wasn't prepared for his first start to be at UF with Easley in his face the whole time he was in. The kid stunk but let's not act like he didn't have constant pressure right in his face. I think he is probably a little better than what he showed that day but will never be a factor as starter. JMHO.

I think only time will tell. I also think it was unfortunate timing when he was asked to start. I am not sure very many qb's would have thrived in that situation. Even though Florida had a disappointing year, they had some beasts on defense that were playing lights out at that point in time.
Peterman deserves another chance, and I think he will be given that - at least on the practice field. If he can prove himself there, then maybe we will see him in games too. I am not expecting it, but I would not be shocked either.

That was a 4-8 Florida team he was up against, not SEC champ world beaters. I know their defense was pretty good when healthy, but he did not look capable of running the offense... nor did he look like an SEC caliber QB.

Their defense was REALLY GOOD when healthy, and they didnt begin to decline until after we played them. He had a bad game, I'm not giving up on him yet. If you'll notice, he didnt have any problems handling the offense when he came in after blowouts... That leads me to believe a great Florida defense, nerves and a little bit of bad luck caused that performance.

I really like Peterman and honestly hope he gets another shot, but he didn't lead a scoring drive the entire 2nd half of the Austin Peay game. He just wasn't ready this year or something.

. . .I think it was extremely difficult for anyone to step in the way Peterman had to against Florida. Yes, he had a disastrous showing, but he is a tough competitor and will bounce back (if given the opportunity!)

If this guy or any of the other QB's can't beat Worley for the starting position..we are in for another long year.

Much as I like Worley, this time around, if the Dobb Goblin doesn't get him, Robert Rocketman will.

I hope this kid comes out next season and looks like the second coming of Manning.
Watching some of the D-Bags on this board eat massive crow would be most enjoyable.

He could come back and win the starting job this season. Yes he was horrific against UF but I think he is a lot better than that. I know people are dismissing him but I am not discounting anyone. CBJ said the QB job is wide open for a reason.

It's funny how many on this board candy coat and make excuses for this coaching staff after a season of falling short of their own set goals, but are writing off and ridiculing a player for one bad half of a game.
The hypocrisy knows no bounds.

What concerns me most about the Peterman experiment..is why did CBJ leave him in so long in that game? Why did he not get a few reps during the WKU game? Why, knowing Worley's thumb was injured, did CBJ wait so long in the Bama game to put Dobbs in?
Once a QB starts struggling, CBJ leaves him in alot longer than it seems necessary??
Plus, Peterman didn't have an ounce of help from our OL, that game, right? It was just bad.

I thought he had a bad case of rookie nerves, but it turned out that his hand was broken and required surgery. We should see a better offense this year, all around.

I'll agree with this.

Nobody on here(save for a possible few) know anything about Nate Peterman other than what they saw in the Florida game. They have no clue to his mental make up and what he can or can't bounce back from.

I think it's easier for people to bash players than coaches because most people are submissive to authority and in their own mind they are "better" than college kids.

My thing is bash when it's deserved and praise the same, but if you don't know what the mother you're talking about just keep yer yap shut.
