National title game thread.

Good runner. Not a great passer. Sound firmiliar? Dobbs improved as a passer as time went on. Same may happen for Hurts. But. I don't even care if get flak ffor this (because **** Bama) but I hope he flops like a fish next season and stinks it up.

He has yet to prove to one DC anywhere he can read a defense. He locks one on guy and it's throw or go or out of bounds. Give Orgeron credit, he exposed the Bama offense.

I love the Hurts TD with about 2 minutes to go and Bama fans celebrating like they had already won. 2 minutes as Bama fans now well know is an eternity in football with only one score needed for a win.

Fowler made a comment back in the 2nd qtr after a TD, I believe, about the Ala player running around the sideline with the "title" belt and say something to the effect, "you haven't won any titles yet.." I thought that was funny.

Directing criticism at Hurts is a deflection from Saban and the defense. He is going to take a ton of heat for this loss, way more than he deserves.

When Bama loses, it is their defense that gets torched. Their offense scores enough points to win in all these losses. Bammers can't bring themselves to even mention it. Saban's defense has struggles against mobile QBs.

struggles against running QBs. That's why college football is FULL of dual-threat guys--and in fact if you don't have dual-threat guy you are at a disadvantage and often a decided disadvantage. It's no accident that our offense got much better when Dobbs became the starter.

Bama probably wins this game with Kiffin--that's my feeling. Their offense struggled. Good offenses are going to score points in college football--even against a defense as good as bama's. Anybody who thinks you can punt for most of the game and beat good teams strictly with your defense is crazy. As good as bama's defense as been for years, their offense has been much more productive--good under Kiffin. They missed Kiffin tonight, and I love it. That's not to say Sarkisian won't be good, but this was his first game as OC.

They had way too much faith in their defense.

Their defense was really good, but Watson had figured something out by the second half.

In the coming days you'll see Bammers rip Hurts and not say a word about their defense because it's some kind of a heresy to say anything negative about Saban.

Their offense always scores enough points to win in these games that they lose.

You credit Clemson's defense for making Alabama go what, 2 or 3 for 15 on third down and kept giving the ball back to their offense.

Just kept giving Clemson opportunities on offense ..,,that was the key to the game

Great game.

I think the rest of us need to be honest and admit that these two programs are WAAAAY ahead of us. Not even close.

If you think Tennessee fans are bad listen to the bammer radio show. By the end of it they'll have crucified Hurts and want Saban fired.

The Defense scored a lot of points this season for Bama and it showed tonight

Their offense did struggle tonight, but they still scored 31. With a really good defense, that should be more than enough to win.

In their last 6 losses, Alabama has allowed 35, 43, 42, 23, 45, and 34 points. You have to go back several years to find low scoring games that they lost. When they lose, it is the vaunted Saban defense that gets roasted and has problems, not their offense. However - and this is what I find really annoying - you won't find many people (especially Bammers) who point this out. It is as if Saban is entirely above reproach and not a single critical thing can be said about him. He's an incredible coach - probably the best ever - but this is just an obvious fact when they lose. It is the side of the ball he is most ultimately responsible for that has problems.

One thing you HAVE to have in this era of college football, is a play making QB. Saban even understands this now. Gone are the days of the game manager in college football, you better have a youngster that can create offense around him. Gators and McElwain are struggling with this now.

Actually Saban has won all his national titles with a game manager-type of QB.

Bit of everything in this one. There is no defenae in the game that can play 50% more plays than their offense and win.

The defense gave the offense the ball inside the Clemson 35 twice, and the offense netted no first downs and 3 points.

The offense made big plays but couldn't sustain a drive.

Bad special teams plays bailed Clemson out of bad field position.

The defense came apart at times, and the offense continued to stub its toe. Every facet of Bama's team shares in this loss.

But more than anything, Clemson was simply better.

This was the longest college football title game since the inception of a final "#1 vs #2" game in 1998.

Tonight's game lasted 4 hours and 8 minutes.

Its total length surpassed the previously longest title game: the 2006 Rose Bowl (Texas vs USC - 3 hours and 59 minutes).

And it could've gone to overtime, too.

Think about what happens if that last pass got bobbled. There was only 1 seconds left as is. I really wondered if they might not just kick it with:06 left.

It might have to have been quite a bobble. The ball hits his hands with :03 left on the clock.

Actually, in hindsight (while also watching the replay), I'm unsure why the extra two seconds run off. The WR has already backed into the end zone between the :03 and :02 mark (it looks like it changes to :02 shortly after he backs into the end zone), and then another second runs off in the end zone after the WR - already in the end zone - rolls backwards following the somewhat diving/falling hit from the Alabama player.

Either way, it seems like there'd still be time for the try after the incompletion.
