Navy Seals Save the Captain

This is insanity. I wonder if any news organization will write a story about the pirates plight, and how they were treated brutally by the U.S.?

I'm sure there will be sympathy from some. Further, we will be urged to "understand the plight" of the Somali and recognize that our country's wealth is the real cause.

heh, can't make an omelet without cracking a few eggs.

Meanwhile another American owned ship is being taken toward port in Somalia and Obama won't allow Navy action.

The ship is under the Italian flag with an Italian crew.

If I remember correctly there are presently about 50 ships being held for ransom of various flags in Somali ports.

The Maersk is Danish but registered and licensed under the American flag.

I have sympathy for the Italian crew but not for the owners who probably use the Italian flag to save money on the license fee.

Two of the most fashionable (cheapest) countries that sell licenses are Libya and Panama.

American merchant marines are almost a thing of history, Indonesian, Indian and Philippino crew can be had so much cheaper.

Container ships pretty much ended the longshoreman profession.

Then it is obviously the mission of this Administration to get those Somalian teenagers off of those boats and into quality housing and provide them with quality healthcare at the expense of those that got wealthy off of them.

Bill's already being authored and will be in congressional committees next week under the guise of stimulus.

Where did you see this? I would be surprised if Obama authorized something like that.

His problem is that if he does nothing and this happens again to an American ship then the right will have all the proof they need to say he is soft.

If their is a next US hostage, he(they) have already lost the option of getting bargained for.

No they will still hold them for ransom. If the military gets involved or if anything goes wrong they will most certainly not hesitate to execute hostages.

My point was not so much if this would happen this way again, just pointing out that if Obama had not authorized the use of force it would be used against him by the right if another ship were hijacked.

Has anyone else noticed the White House getting in front of this story and proclaiming it as a victory? It is not as if there were a phone call to the president made and a dramatic directive of "end this hostage situation now" had been made. If there is any credit due it is in trusting the commander to make the decision that would give this man the best shot art survival. A great president would have let the military commanders in charge of this operation take the credit, lord knows if it went wrong they would take the heat.

True that.

I think if this situation arises again with a U.S. hostage and the Navy is called in, they may even think twice about executing the hostage...because they know what would come afterward. These pirates don't seem like your average Muslim extremist pre-occupied with martyrdom. They want money. I can see them just handing over the hostage, or avoiding U.S. flagged ships altogether.

but if the pirates are unwilling to bargain, how do they get a ransom? They'll bargain, or stick to non-Americans.

They will stick to non-Americans.

You don't need much of an education to see what bargaining with US captives gets you. Why would any pirate choose that route again? Although I do see there is room for me to be wrong. These pirates were stuck out in a boat with no power or options. Next US captives will be taken to a location we do not know about.
