I was pondering over the present situation with our basketball team and came to a reasonable conclusion. College basketball and the NBA are two completely different styles of play. Overall a successful college basketball player excels in smart play, shooting the basketball and the three-point shot (Adam Morrison, JJ Reddick, Chris Lofton etc.) however, NBA scouts seem to completely disregard this and look solely at athleticism. With that being said, I see a ton of people going to the NBA from our lineup, but I just don't see them being successful in college. Are we recruiting the wrong type of player?

If you see tons of NBA players on Tennessee's current roster, you need to stop taking hallucinogens.

How many Final Four appearances did Adam Morrison, JJ Reddick, and Chris Lofton account for in their combined careers?

Maybe not tons but. Wayne Chism, Tyler Smith, and possibly Bobby Maze, Scotty Hopson, and JP Prince

I see your point but as hat said, those players don't win championships. Its often NBA talent laden teams that win. Example. Last years Final. I think Kansas had three go pro and Memphis had Derick Rose (he counts for at least two he was so great).
The year before Florida had three NBA caliber players on it (Brewer, Horford, Noah) and played Ohio State with Conley Jr. and Oden. They also played UCLA who had Farmar and someone else I'm sure. I think our problem is we aren't recruiting good NBA talent. When people here talk about Tyler and Chism going pro they don't under stand that both will probably stay in developmental leagues if anything. Best case they ride the bench.

Hopson is the first player with the potential to be good in the NBA, but so far he hasn't proven anything. Maybe if he stays 2 more years our freshman class plus him can produce great results.

Memphis had 3 go pro last year... 1.) D. Rose 2.) CDR. 3.) Joey Dorsey. :hi:

Indiana in '87 and Kentucky in '98 are the only teams in recent history to win an NCAA title without a player who went on to have a significant NBA career.

jesus christ some of the names I've seen get thrown around in this thread as NBA players. Have you people ever watched NBA ball or are you just naming players that are half way competent college players?

i would say chism, smith, prince, and hopson

I am a Vol fan thru and thru, but prince? What brand and flavor of kool aid are you drinking??? He has no outside shot, his ball handling skills and inside game are mediocre. Chism and Smith MIGHT make a team, questionable, but with Prince there is NO chance. The jury is still out on Hopson.....

Prince does 1 thing very, very well: drives the lane and finds open holes. He does another thing with admirable competence: passes the ball down-low effectively. He does another thing decently enough: steals.

That alone makes him worthy of consideration. Do I think he'll be a good pro, or even any kind of pro? Not particularly. There is more a chance of Prince at the next level than just about any other player other than smith and hopson 3 years down the road. Hate him all you want for his shortcomings, but don't let that get in the way of some pretty easy to understand reasons why people talk about him as a potential(<emphasis again) nba player, albeit a limited one.

I could see Prince doing just as well as Chism. Just saying, hes pretty athletic and makes plays going to the hoop. A more wide open game would only help him IMO. Not saying he will do well I just think he will be in some type of NBA league or at worst Europe. His shot is something that can be drastically improved.

Name the last guy to play in college for four years, then go to the NBA and improve his shot from atrocious to competent.

How many years did Trevor Ariza play in college? Also, JP can't carry his bags. It doesn't happen all the time.

Honestly, I watch the NBA all the time and I cannot tell you a player who didn't improve his shot in the NBA. All I'm saying is, I cannot see a team passing on his length, explosiveness, and athleticism. There is no way he won't be picked up.

Scouts care about athleticism, not as much your shot. Think about it, the best shooters never make it in the nba, its the athletes who improve their shot.

I am in no way saying he will start for an NBA team, jsut that he will probably get picked up. Now Bobby Maze? I agree with you, no way.

I'm sure that assessment comes from your numerous conversations with them. I'm probably not the guy you want to be telling what NBA scouts "look for.'

Then you should use your time more wisely, as you have no clue about what you're watching.

No I taking that from what I watch. Say what you want but the JJ Reddicks never make it. Trevor Arizas do.

How many NBA seasons did Michael Wilson or Stanley Asumnu log in the NBA? They're both more athletic than Trevor Ariza.

If scouts valued Ariza's athleticism so much more than Reddick's shooting, why did JJ get drafted about 30 spots higher than Trevor?
