'22 NC DE James Pearce (Tennessee signee)

Tennessee isn't holding off James Pearce because of his academic situation, if that's what you're asking. He does have some work to do, but I don't think the Vols would turn him away. They like him quite a bit, and if they could sign him on Wednesday, I think they would gladly take him. The big question is whether he will sign on Wednesday, though, and right now it sounds like he's more likely to wait until February to sign. His state championship game is Saturday night, so right now it looks like he probably won't be visiting anywhere this weekend. And if he extends his recruitment beyond the Early Signing Period, then it's always possible other teams could enter the picture and make things tougher for Tennessee, Georgia and South Carolina.

James Pearce will play for a state championship on Saturday night. The original plan was to bring him in officially this weekend but the fact they made the title game made that impossible. Mike Ekeler will be at his game on Saturday night. Tennessee continues to be in the best position possible. They are hoping he will sign next week but most believe he will wait until February. We have talked to a few different people this week who believe that Tennessee will still stand a solid chance in February even with the added attention that Pearce is sure to see.

I have wondered if the added portal activity that can happen after ESD would not get some guys to NOT wait till FEB for fear of everybody filling up their 85 slots. 85 is 85 whether they are part of the 25 counters or through the portal recovery. Or do I have that wrong?

One of the maybe unintended consequences of the portal is that teams will have to make space for portal players and often without the player wanting it. If UT fills up the class with HS and JUCO then you'll see current players lose their scholarships so 7 portal players can be added
