NC State vs Western Carolina Thursday at 7PM

WCU is a better team than I thought. I noticed they had a lot of transfer players from big schools like Alabama and others. Their lack of depth showed in the end, but WCU has some dudes.
for giggles and to give some perspective some interesting ones is NDSU is number 2 (for some reason FCS is ruled by schools from the Dakotas and montana. every year for like the last 20 years). UTC is number 8 Western Carolina 19th. Top 10 FCS teams can be dangerous if you sleep on them.

No it actually matters more.
Not really, especially for B1G and SEC teams. Those teams get the benefit of conference perception (and $$$). A 10-2 Tennessee with a weak OOC schedule gets in over a 10-2 whoever from the ACC or Big XII with a strong OOC.

Very incorrect. One of the biggest knocks on Ohio State's schedule right now this season is that they don't play a single P5 school OOC. SoS and SoR have a big factor in playoff rankings. With the field opening up from 4 to 12 it matters even more because the numbers will be that much closer for 5-15 it will literally come down to SoS/SoR for those last 4 in. Its come down to it in the playoffs with 4 already.

Math is undeafeated.

You're making predictions on how the future would look. I'm making predictions based on reality, as in money and the past.

Don’t make assumptions by first game performances. History has examples of poor game 1 & great seasons along with the reverse. 1989, Majors barely beat Colo St 17-14 & went 11-1. Dooley had a great win in 2012, for example, vs NCState. 3 weeks later we realized we were screwed.

No I am making predictions based on how the playoff teams are actually chosen. Its math.

How the playoff teams are chosen

How the CFP works

The relevant part to this discussion is this

Rankings criteria
College Football Playoff selectors create Top 25 rankings based on their evaluation of teams’ performance on the field. The committee employs several metrics to select the best teams.
Strength of schedule
Head-to-head game results
Results vs. teams in Top 25 rankings
Results vs. common opponents
Conference championships
Selectors are allowed to use a variety of advanced analytics to gauge teams' performance, but those numbers don't play a formal role in determining Top 25 rankings, which is a decision made by selectors' own judgement.

This is exactly why Alabama got in the playoffs last season over FSU. We all know the FSU's QB being out was the main thing but the reason they used was SoS/SoR. FSU only played 3 ranked teams. LSU, Duke and Louisville. Dukes late season meltdown hurt their (and FSU's) SoR/SoS massively. Duke went on to lose 3 of their next 4 games after losing to FSU ending the season with 5 losses. Had Duke won 2 more games and had Louisville beaten Kentucky FSU is in the playoffs no question. Because math.

He was the guy I thought would be the problem and he showed it this game. Smothers also looked good in a his few snaps and Joly.. the one part of their team I was most worried about being good is. Their defense didn't look impressive but their offensive skill players did. Concepcion and Noah Rogers looked good. Waters and Smothers looked good. Their O-line looked horrible but both of those backs are home run hitter types. The attention we will have to give to their WR's and TE's could lead to some big runs. Are we up to the job... heck yes, I think. But this game does not make me feel like its an easy win. Their offense is dangerous.
They looked turnover prone. Maybe it's because it was their first game, but they will also be facing much better athletes than they did last night.

McCall was a great fit in Jamie Chadwell’s offense at Coastal. I watched him for 3 years (daughter goes there). He is not a power 5 caliber quarterback. He is a gamer but injury prone as he likes to run. I suspect they are trying to save his legs for us. He is not known for arm strength but does make plays. I’m sure Banks will be ready.
With that being said, Vols by fiddy…
Yeah, his throws didn't have much zip to them. Should be able to bait him into some INTs.

Their offense isn’t dangerous. Is it decent? Sure. McCall is a little above average. If he were still with Chadwell it might be a different story. There is zero reason we shouldn’t beat the brakes off of NCST.

Not really. Just like strength of schedule is pretty much irrelevant now.
you are very misled and might need to understand how math works. The fact MORE teams are involved means SoS means more because the margins will be smaller and there will be a lot of teams with the same record. If you have 4 teams with 3 losses and 5 with 2 how do you separate them? Lets Say Bama and LSU both end up 9-3 they don't play each other but are both in the SEC there is only room for one of them to get in.. you flip a coin? Nope SoS/SoR. its easy to pick those first 6-7 teams 5 get in automatically. The final 5-6 are gonna have very similar if not identical records. Some of those last 2 are probably gonna get in over teams with more wins than them.

You will see moving forward how wrong you are

That's exactly why it was scheduled. Look at where Tennessee has scheduled neutral site games recently:

2012: Atlanta
2015: Nashville
2016: Bristol
2017: Atlanta
2018: Charlotte
2023: Nashville
2024: Charlotte
2025: Atlanta
2028 Charlotte

Guess where Tennessee's three primary recruiting target areas are? Nashville/Middle TN, Atlanta metro, and Charlotte/Central NC/Western NC.

These neutral site games are absolutely about recruiting. The optics of seeing our fans take over the stadiums in these 3 cities certainly doesn't hurt.
Yep. That and extra money. Both schools get a large payday for these major city neutral site invitational games now.

Another player the secondary will have to keep a close eye on is tight end Justin Joly. Joly, who had five receptions for 75 yards against WCU, may have a chip on his shoulder going into this game after visiting with the Vols in the summer but being informed by the coaching staff that they were no longer interested. Shutting down these two threats in the passing game will go a long way in winning this game.
who knew
