Curious hire for Wisky

I think Andersen is a great hire. Utah State has been a competitive football team the past few years regardless of the opponents they have played. Two years ago they gave Auburn all they could handle. Wisconsin got a great defensive mind with this hire

I'm surprised Andersen is leaving the state of Utah. Figured he was waiting for BYU to come open.

I think a lot of people here are surprised, as well. He just received an extension through 2018. But, $2 mil would have been hard to turn down when you're only making $700,000.

I think that Andersen is a very good coach and has done a remarkable job at Utah State, but Wisconsin just doesn't seem like a good fit. Andersen doesn't have any ties at all to the B1G or Midwest, and actually has never had a coaching stop anywhere east of the Mississippi...

might be a while

Could be but Mendenhall is a hot name, and while he doesn't appear to want to break his current contract, he negotiated down an extension for 6 years to 3 years. Which possibly is setting up a chance at "free agency" after the 2013 season.

I don't know if he is planning on leaving BYU but he does seem to be keeping his options open.

Why do you have to have ties to a school or a conference to be successful? Saban, Miles and Meyer had no previous connections to the SEC prior to LSU and Florida. I think you're making too big of a deal about location and conference. I've never been to Utha but I have been to Wisconsin and I'm betting the weather is similar. Winners win and if you can win at Utah State, you can win just about anywhere. He was an amazing hire and I think he'll be beating up on 75% of the Big 10 and competing with the other 25% to be the best in no time.

Also, I'm happy with Butch Jones but I guess the people who told me that he wouldn't leave Utah State when I suggestd we hire him were wrong...

Great hire imo.

Weather is much nicer here throughout the year. May through October is usually like So Cal weather. Winters aren't nearly as bitter. But, Gary got a hell of a pay raise to relocate. Most people here thought he was good through next year. Especially, with the extension he just signed and his words to boosters and the team as recent as last Saturday. I think this opportunity came at him almost overnight.

Updates from smaller schools:

Temple: New York Giants assistant OL coach Matt Rhule
SJSU: University of San Diego HC Ron Caragher
Utah State: promoted OC Matt Wells
Kent State: Arkansas DC Paul Haynes
Western Michigan: Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR coach PJ Fleck

Rumors Monday that FIU hired Butch Davis.

Sports director came out and said the story was false though:

FIU executive director of sports and entertainment Pete Garcia said Monday afternoon when asked about the stories bouncing around the Internet that Butch Davis was in as FIU's next head football coach, "Butch Davis is not the FIU football coach. That story is totally false."

So, that's the official word from Camp Mitch for now. Still, I'd say expect an announcement Jan. 2-6.

He was to start the year. He only had one conference win last year, and lost five straight games to close the year. Started 1-3 this year.

he was moving into position to be on the hotseat, but never made it. The 2011 season was expected to be a down year, and he surprised too many people by beating WVU. Syracuse itself never had any intention of firing him or even contemplating it.

The same thing will be going on in Knoxville this time next year, just because of how brutal our schedule is next year.
