NCAA Looking to Shorten Games

Until they get rid of commercials and don’t review every play, then it may be possible to get under 4 hour games. 🥱

I like your way of thinking, I REALLY do. But the fact is, commercials are why we can watch games on non-subscription channels. Sponsor and ad money is why networks can air the games without cost to us regular folks. Actually, I don't mind commercials that are fun and entertaining. But after viewing the thing three or times, they aren't fun or entertaining anymore, just an annoyance.

When I first saw the link, I thought, "You mean the NCAA is going to de-Sabanize CFB?" Oh well, there may be hope yet.

They have tried to do this but they simply want give up any advertisement time. All they have to do is follow the NFL model.

Dump instant replay. They still get it wrong too often, or they ignore their own rules ("indisputable video evidence," anyone?).

Keep review but no booth initiated except on targeting. Other than that each coach gets one challenge Per half. Every challenge they win they keep, lose the challenge lose your challenge privileges for rest of half. Last two minutes of half challenges can be booth or Coach initiated If coach has one left.

Who is actually complaining that the games are too long? I agree the advertisements are waaaayyy too much, drag time on, and slow down the momentum of the game.......but we all know that NCAA / TV have to make their $$$. I dont remember ANYONE turning off the nearly 4-hour Tennessee vs Alabama game............

Anyone I've ever heard complain about it being too long sits in the living room watching the Real Housewives saturday marathon while me and the dog watch games in the man cave so I'm not sure what college fan is actually complaining........

The Bama and UF games were both over 4 hours. It's excessive. There's no good reason for a CFB game to take 90 minutes longer to play than an NFL game.

I would be cool with the running clock and the 2 minute warning. Also the NFL stops the clock on all plays ran out of bounds inside the last 2 minutes of the 1st half and last 5 minutes of the 2nd half.

I remember in 2006 when they were trying to make games shorter, so they decided to start the clock when the kicker kicked the ball off the tee instead of when the returner touched the ball. The whole time, I was thinking how dumb it was that they decided to do that instead of just keep the clock running after 1st downs. I have always hated the way the clock stops after first downs. I would love it if they changed that rule to make it like the NFL, which has it right. However, that's the only rule change I would want. I don't want a running clock after an incomplete pass.

Maybe a compromise on both first down and incomplete pass clock situations. Start the game clock when the play clock has 10 seconds elapse or some other number for a 40 or 25 second clock. Get your receivers back and lined up but not a full play clock. Or maybe inside two minutes when the offense is free to snap the ball after the ball is set and declared ready for play. No running clock while the defense is dictating clock while being given the chance to make defensive adjustments or just line up. One exception being when a ball is clocked behind the line of scrimmage when the offense is giving a play to do so. That in a way is shortening the game with near zero elapsed time for the play. The smart guys should be able to meet the objective with clear administrable rules change. The less official judgement involved the better. Just guaranteeing the offense they can snap the ball after 10 seconds and as or before the game clock starts.

Oddly the faster the clock the better it might fit CJH's methodology. Speed up the game clock byspeeding up the snap and reduce defensive adjustment ability.

I don’t really care about this change, as long as they don’t mess with Heupel’s offensive system and try and pull some bs where they force defensive substitutions ad take away our strategic advantage.

YES - I can't count how many times this year Tennessee was rolling in the fast tempo offense only to be throttled back by an instant replay review...frustrating.
Like you stated too...most times they still get it wrong.
They should give the coach one challenge flag a half, and let the game play out.

How 'bout if we clear up that college games are not 90 mins longer than NFL?

However, this only tells half the story, with the average game taking 3 hours and 12 minutes to complete.

https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/other-sports/american-sports/how-long-super-bowl-lasts-13626956

According to NCAA statistics, the average game takes 3 hours and 22 minutes, an increase of four minutes from just five years ago.

I don't think college football has much of a problem. A lot of that 10 min difference could be halftime

I personally LOVE that games are 4 hours under Huepel. I thought that would be seen as a benefit to TV producers who get extra commercial time. It's not like UT fans are turning off the game because it's too long.

As a guy that recently went through some medical issues (yeah I'm getting old and high blood pressure and diabetes have reared their ugly heads) and am now trying to control and restrict my diet, the second half of those 3:30 kick off games KILL me - seems every other commercial is BW3, Dominoes, Papa Johns, Wendys, etc....you know all the stuff at dinner time that a guy like me isn't supposed to partake. HAHAHA

K-Town........I usually agree with ya bro but......football season is already too short and I feel like its gone as quickly as a fall breeze......I dont want to shorten the game.

- limit instant replay reviews to 30 seconds. Cant figure it out in 30 seconds? Tough sh!t, move on with the game.
- eliminate 4th down. Do an inverse Spinal Tap where 3rd down is the new 4th down. Some leagues go to 4, we go to 3.
-
eliminate PAT. Always 2 point conversions from now on. 2 point plays are not reviewable.
- Touchbacks go to the 35 yard line.
