NCAA Open Jobs Thread

Holy crap, this bit SB Nation ran about Every Coach Rumored For Your School is so spot-on:

6. The successful coordinator who might be awful on his own: He rarely talks to the media, he's never been a head coach, and the side of the ball he coaches is the lifelong calling card of the head man, who is one of the best in the game. Is he calling those plays? Is he developing those players? No one has any idea, but if you hire him, you get two free years of using "He's part of the [More Successful Coach] tree" as an excuse for 5-7.

Kirby. Smart.

This doesn't qualify to me as a wow hire that some had talked about

Maryland: Michigan defensive coordinator DJ Durkin has emerged as a strong candidate at Maryland and has met with school officials about their head coaching vacancy, according to Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports. Forde notes that “no job offer was made, but the interview went well” and that it’s not clear how many other candidates the school has interviewed, or will interview.

Maryland was never going to get a "wow" hire. Durkin is a great defensive mind and one of the best recruiters in America. Maryland could do a lot worse.

What I am hearing, most likely Jimbo to LSU.

Not sure who is taking the bill but its getting pretty loud on this one.

If Jimbo is smart he'll stay at FSU

A change of scene would probably not do the man harm at this point, considering his "situation". Nobody wanted Jimbo to leave to start with. Jimbo is the safe hire and would make sense to both parties considering Jimbo's past with them. Of course, that's a lot of cash involved.

I like Herman depending if there is a solid DC lined up. Very risky but possible high reward. Herman wouldn't cost half.

Because of one bad game against Indiana? Fifth in the nation in yards per carry allowed but yeah it's garbage and I hope Maryland runs in the other direction.

Ohio State-Michigan will be interesting and Michigan has a shot if they can slow down the OSU running game. Do you think Harbaugh will be a candidate for the Colts job? He would be a good candidate.

I'm not the type to say "Harbaugh's at Michigan 'til retirement", but I don't think he's going to a roster that is literally just Andrew Luck, TY Hilton, and rotting corpses

imo they won't fire Les unless they already have their next coach

I think most would agree with you, but that doesn't make it so. I would say either the AD is out of job fairly soon or Les is. If the AD doesn't have the $10-15m he is done as he is not only undercut the coach by not confirming he'll be back but he won't have the funds to replace him. Also, I believe Cameron's contracts is up. Steele looks DOA.

At this point in time, hard to imagine the situation being corrected with who the primary coaches are.

If Les hasn't really spoken with the AD, then you figure he (AD) has it lined up.... or he better start looking for a new job.

Charlie Strong promises players he's staying with Texas Longhorns, says 'I don't run from anything'

Well, if LSU were to go with Jimbo over Les, Texas might want to consider going with Les over Strong. I understand Texas needed to be cleanerd up but 6-7 in year 1 while sitting at 4-6 in year 2 with games remaining against Texas Tech and Baylor, looking like a sub .500 season if odds hold up. Then there's Nebraska who might be even worse when it comes to Mike Riley by only giving him 1 year. Other than the Purdue loss, none of his losses were all that bad. But sitting at 5-6, sadly he may need this win over undefeated Iowa to keep his job after only a year. I think Nebraska has a good shot at pulling the upset. Iowa's record is 11-0 but they're not anymore impressive for the most part other than they pulled out close wins while Nebraska lost close games. Plus, they're big time rivals and the game is in Lincoln.

I hadn't been paying attention to Nebraska..there is talk of firing Riley in year 1 or year zero in Dooley years?

lol

There had been. As Boston said, I doubt it would happen but their fans were upset and causing a stir early on. Nebraska got tired of 9-4 and 10-3 seasons under Pelini. They started out 3-6 before winning their last two, including a big win over Michigan State. Now they have a good shot at a big win over Iowa.

vs BYU L 33-28

vs San Antonio W 48-9

@ Miami L 36-33

vs SMiss W 36-28

@ Illinois L 14-13

vs Wisconsin L 23-21

@ Minnesota W 48-25

vs NWestern L 30-28

@ Purdue L 55-45

vs 7 Mich St W 39-38

@ Rutgers W 31-14

vs 3 Iowa

Had they not beaten Michigan State and lost to Iowa to finish 4-8? I don't know. That was a good win for them and a win over Iowa to finish 6-6 would make the season look far less awful than it once did at 3-6.
