NCAA Regionals hosted by the Lady Vols Softball Team

Gregg should have run toward the player instead of throwing to third so early make the player commit and then throw the ball home or to third. The player with the ball always tries to get closer to the action to make the throw shorter and also cause some confusion for the base runner.

I give Gregg the benefit of doubt because that ball was hit to her at shortstop and was a bang bang play. Fundamentally that is the approach but the girl was closer to third than home and Gregg had to make a split second decision.

If that's his explanation, he just made himself look like a bigger idiot. That would have been a delayed dead ball in that case indicated by him extending his left hand while the ball was still live. He didn't do that; he watched the ball only and never looked for the runner to touch the plate. An immediate dead ball would force all runners to return to the last base successfully reached. He should have just admitted he blew the call and gained a little credibility.

I'm no rules expert, but when the catcher dropped the ball and knocked down the base runner (who was in foul territory), wouldn't that have been catcher interference with the runner awarded safe at home? If not, why not?

Because the catcher never touched the runner it was the third baseman chasing her down the line and tagging her. Then the ball was dropped still the runner never touched home just lay there and the pitcher grabs the ball and tags her.

First off the catcher did not have the ball the 3rd baseman did .I am not either but been involved with both HS softball and baseball many years. My understanding is that because the fielder had the ball legally and did not have to block the plate when the run down ended the tag negated any interference. The fact is she would be out it the ump could see at all, until she dropped the ball or it was knocked out of her hand. If the ump used the excuse previously stated in the thread again shows he was well over his head..JMHO as always!:)

Interference only applies to an offensive player while defensive players can be charged with obstruction. Since no one obstructed the runner's path to a base, that doesn't apply here. Malicious contact would be the only possible call for "pushing" someone down (I'm not suggesting that should have been called either; however, that does not automatically grant a base to the runner. It would call for an ejection of the defensive player though. The umpire booted the call plain and simple. He adamantly pointed to the plate as though she had touched it, so that was his basis for a safe call. Hopefully, he learns to watch the runner next time.

Basically what I said but so much more eloquent. :loco:

After watching the replay of the USC Upstate game I've got this big grin on my face. The LVs shouldn't have let the game get to the top of the 7th before they finally woke up & scored 7 runs to win that classic game. That's one for the ages I believe.

Umpire at home wasn't very good at calling balls and strikes either. He called a strike on Batts that was at least a foot high and probably outside.

I saw that & the TN fans let him know about it too.
The ump payed no attention to the fans displeasure either.

Floridas pitching masks their less than stellar offense . They will have to be better at the plate to win it all.

I have not seen much until lately on Arizona but they look every bit the number 2 team. May be the team to beat for it all.JMHO as always!:)
