NCAA Regionals hosted by the Lady Vols Softball Team

It should start to become clear why the NCAA did what they did to Minnesota

That's one team. Otherwise despite Minnesotas loss to Bama the Big Ten has done well. Wisconsin leads Oregon as we speak.

In other news Looks like the loss to us earlier has crashed USCU

I disagree on the rundown play. Never make an extra throw when you can tag the runner yourself. You are 50 times more likely to make a bad throw than you are to drop the ball as you tag. That was a fluke and Seggern made the correct play as soon as she saw she would catch the runner. If she hadn't dropped the ball OR if the ump had been watching the play instead of scratching his butt we'd have gotten out of the inning with no runs. The next batter flied out, which would have been the 3rd out.

You can disagree but you see how tagging the runner out allows the ball to be kicked and then the runner that was at 2nd ended up a third. I know with your vast coaching experience all your team were winners! If you don't know fundamentals you need to have a seat!:shaking2::shaking2::shaking2:

And if a frog had wings he would not bump his ass when he jumps!!

If minnisota wins they will have to beat buma twice and I don't think that will happen. Big Ten is not the SEC!

Just because Seggern tagged her out (had she held onto the ball), doesn't mean she played it correctly. You make the tag at 3rd rather than at home for precisely the reason we saw: If you make a mistake, drop the ball, make a poor throw, the runner gets back safely to 3rd as opposed to scoring. That is the fundamental way to do it--certainly the way I was taught and I played baseball for a long time. I mean, if you are Seggern and can easily run the baserunner down, sure, do it. But it wasn't easy. She had to dive to tag her, and the ball came out. You can't always be sure that you can run down the baserunner--and Seggern had to dive to make the tag; that is why the ball came out. We'll have to disagree.

Yep we cut from the same cloth sir. I am watching Longwood play USC upstate online and a similar situation was happening and the runner was run back to third and tagged out there. I don't know where some of these so called experts learned , if they did these stupid comments about fundamentals. This 50 times more likely BS is just BS.

Right, but my larger point is that the Big Ten, Ohio State withstanding, as not been the disaster everyone believed them to be. UMN took Bama to extras. Wisconsin beat Mizzou and leads Oregon. Michigan hanging with Washington.

Yes, we'll have to agree to disagree. You never pass up a chance to tag the runner - you may not get the chance again on the play.

I see your point as well but anyone who beats the weakest team in the SEC which is Mizzo or Ms State does not carry much water and Washington is up 8-4 on Michigan . Lets see how the supers startout. Point well taken!

For what it's worth I agree that running the base runner toward the plate was the wrong approach. There are two major reasons to force the runner back to third.

First, if there is a dropped tag or other mishap it won't easily result in a run scored, and almost as important, by force the runner back to third you prevent the other base runner(s) from advancing to third and second behind the play at the plate.

On the other hand, kids do get excited and forget all about strategy and just "go for it." We survived, so no need for name calling or questioning people intelligence. It's softball...sh*t happens. :)

That's my two cents worth anyway. :hi:

Really if you will reread what is said is STUPID comments not someones intelligence. Not knowing fundamentals is not because of intelligence. And you are right Sh happens!

The atrocious call at home plate put me in a coma and it looked like it had the same effect on Lady Vols ( yep I still refer to them as Lady Vols ).Then after they failed to score in 6th inning with the bases loaded ,I thought it all over so went out in my back yard to breathe in some fresh air and returned just in time to see the home run on the last strike and two away. That was a miracle win....

Watched some of most other games today and there were also two more controversial home plate calls ...not as bad as the one in our game but they were wrong and bad calls .Softball has become a most popular sport and the World Series ( Regionals/Super Regionals /and World Series itself ) deserve a replay system during the playoffs at least at home plate and 1st base

Yep LVs for me as well. That ump never looked at home plate so he has know way of knowing if she touched it or not, she did not get close. He watched only the ball. I went back and watched it 3 times and he was lost. The runner actually tried to touch it twice after she realized she did not and that dude never noticed it at all. There is no Protest option for that play allowed because it was a judgement call. It could have ruined our whole season and it actually ruined USC upstate because they deflated and lost the next game. Their coach was a prick the way we was acting toward ralph. As always JMHO!:)

You make some good points. On the runner at 2nd ending up at 3rd I would counter with this: Usually when a runner is hung up between 3rd and home the 3rd base coach will expect the runner to be tagged out in the rundown, especially at this high level of ball, and will have the 2nd base runner come to 3rd anyway. The last thing the 3rd base coach wants is to lose the runner to the rundown AND not advance the other runners. I believe the runner would have ended up at 3rd either way. But that's just my opinion :)

Who expected us to play Longwood again in the final? That's a surprise. Poor USC is surely wondering how they went from being one out away from 2-0 to out of the tournament by end of the evening.

Wonder if tomorrow's 1st game at noon will be on TV? Surely we can get on one of 3 stations(ESPN2, SEC Network, & ESPNU). There are a few games scheduled for noon. The rest are scheduled mostly for 2:30 EST except for a couple of West Coast games which are at 7:00 PM EST.

I believe the game is on ESPN3.

Wonder if we'll pitch both Moss and Arnold today-- give Arnold more tournament experience to boost her confidence and manage the pitch count for both. It will be interesting to see if Ralph puts Bearden and perhaps Weimer back in the lineup. I would think 1-5 is set in the order, but y'never know with Ralph.

Hope we can close this out before the rain comes. Getting ready to head on over. Anybody else going?
