I disagree on the rundown play. Never make an extra throw when you can tag the runner yourself. You are 50 times more likely to make a bad throw than you are to drop the ball as you tag. That was a fluke and Seggern made the correct play as soon as she saw she would catch the runner. If she hadn't dropped the ball OR if the ump had been watching the play instead of scratching his butt we'd have gotten out of the inning with no runs. The next batter flied out, which would have been the 3rd out.

Just because Seggern tagged her out (had she held onto the ball), doesn't mean she played it correctly. You make the tag at 3rd rather than at home for precisely the reason we saw: If you make a mistake, drop the ball, make a poor throw, the runner gets back safely to 3rd as opposed to scoring. That is the fundamental way to do it--certainly the way I was taught and I played baseball for a long time. I mean, if you are Seggern and can easily run the baserunner down, sure, do it. But it wasn't easy. She had to dive to tag her, and the ball came out. You can't always be sure that you can run down the baserunner--and Seggern had to dive to make the tag; that is why the ball came out. We'll have to disagree.
If minnisota wins they will have to beat buma twice and I don't think that will happen. Big Ten is not the SEC!

Right, but my larger point is that the Big Ten, Ohio State withstanding, as not been the disaster everyone believed them to be. UMN took Bama to extras. Wisconsin beat Mizzou and leads Oregon. Michigan hanging with Washington.
Yep we cut from the same cloth sir. I am watching Longwood play USC upstate online and a similar situation was happening and the runner was run back to third and tagged out there. I don't know where some of these so called experts learned , if they did these stupid comments about fundamentals. This 50 times more likely BS is just BS.
For what it's worth I agree that running the base runner toward the plate was the wrong approach. There are two major reasons to force the runner back to third.
First, if there is a dropped tag or other mishap it won't easily result in a run scored, and almost as important, by force the runner back to third you prevent the other base runner(s) from advancing to third and second behind the play at the plate.
On the other hand, kids do get excited and forget all about strategy and just "go for it." We survived, so no need for name calling or questioning people intelligence. It's softball...sh*t happens.
That's my two cents worth anyway. :hi:
The atrocious call at home plate put me in a coma and it looked like it had the same effect on Lady Vols ( yep I still refer to them as Lady Vols ).Then after they failed to score in 6th inning with the bases loaded ,I thought it all over so went out in my back yard to breathe in some fresh air and returned just in time to see the home run on the last strike and two away. That was a miracle win....
Watched some of most other games today and there were also two more controversial home plate calls ...not as bad as the one in our game but they were wrong and bad calls .Softball has become a most popular sport and the World Series ( Regionals/Super Regionals /and World Series itself ) deserve a replay system during the playoffs at least at home plate and 1st base
