NCAA Uniform Thread

How can I add more fuel to this discussion? Hmmm... Ok I got it.

Michael Jordan is a narcissistic prick from UNC who’s logo I don’t want on our football uniforms because he was a basketball player . There, that’s my reasoning . I will not be convinced otherwise. Doesn’t change the fact that some schools have chosen to be under the Jordan/Jumpman umbrella. There is nothing any different or special with the football uniforms with the Jordan Logo than there is with having a swoosh. It’s up to personal preference and your feelings about MJ .

I don’t disagree with your reasoning. The world saw the real MJ during his HoF speech. And my feelings on MJ’s assistant coach at UNC are well documented. F that guy.

To many, the Jumpman logo only resonates as a basketball logo, as it was originally intended. And the sight of that logo on anything but a basketball uniform or basketball shoes will forever seem odd.

But the logo, brand, gear....whatever you want to call it, is no longer “specifically geared” for basketball. I’m not sure how many more examples BW needs to be convinced of this fact.

You know it doesn’t matter what I think, you think or BW thinks . Florida is a Jordan school, it’s a powerful brand, that people globally recognize. I do wonder if say Tiger had not had his drop off and his “TW” logo would’ve become so large that Stanford (Nike school) started using a Tiger Woods logo on their golf apparel, which makes sense, but then introduced it to money sports and replaced their swoosh with the TW logo ?
It’s crazy a hypothetical, but from a parallel standpoint it’s very similar.

Interesting take...

I think Tiger’s brand is still a bit toxic to represent anyone but Tiger, but before his personal issues it wouldn’t be far fetched to see Stanford’s golf team wearing gear with the TW logo instead of the swoosh.

And I can’t see the TW brand having crossover appeal to other sports.

That’s what I was trying to hypothesize . I think Tiger at his peak was the closest thing we’ve ever seen to Jordan from a dominant marketable athlete and if he didn’t have his personal issues or injuries would people be willing to embrace his logo on Basketball shorts, football jerseys, football/baseball Cleats etc. ? I doubt it because golf is a game, not a sport, and also not as accessible as playing basketball. For a hot minute though Tiger made playing Golf cool.

If Ohio State starts wearing a LeBron logo on their football uniforms then I quit. I’m not sure what I’m quitting, but I quit.

I hate the Patriots but the throwbacks look much better

Yep. They'll likely never change back since they've had all their success in the silver and navy uniforms, but the old red jerseys and white pants with the Pat Patriot logo on the helmet is way better.

Same goes with the Broncos; their Elway era look is 100 times better than the ones they wear now. They at the least need to go to their orange alternate with the "D" helmet logo full time; but the the lighter blue helmets look better.

The Falcons' 90s black uniforms >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> their current look.

And even though they sucked something awful, the Bucs' creamsicle look is so much better than the garbage the Bucs wear now.

Part of the problem is the NFL's silly one helmet rule and that made some teams stop doing throwbacks.

To get the discussion back to unfiroms...

You now what trend I'm glad is finally apparently dead (save for a few holdovers): the side striping on uniforms, especially when they extended to connect to the pants stripes.

Here's an example that pretty much summed up the football uniform trend from about 2002 to 2010ish. West Virginia's football uniforms from 2005-06.

I've been a traditionalist when it come to unis, but I'm beginning to re-think it. A "brand" like Bama can get away with sticking to tradition, but the younger generation likes the bold, loud multi combo uniforms. If it gets a couple of recruits to look at your program a little closer, why not do it. It worked with Oregon.

Adapt or get passed over.
Even Notre Dame has changed its traditional uniforms and also field turf now

These are probably the worst and that’s quite an accomplishment considering how many they have have had and how bad they are. I love the Notre Dame old school green jerseys , but they should quit alternates altogether

They're awful uniforms but they didn't look as bad on the field as I thought they would (at least IMO), their biggest problem is they decided to take 2 of the most hated franchises and combine em'

Your hatred of Alabama is noted.

But those crimson uniforms are the textbook definition of classic and traditional.

See also Penn State, Michigan, USC, Texas, Auburn, Georgia and Tennessee.
"Classic" and "traditional" are usually euphemisms for "looks good." Alabama is a rare exception. The crimson helmets in particular are dull - the crimson jersey looks OK. It really isn't because of a hatred of Alabama - I also hate the New York Yankees but have always thought their unis looked great.

@RDU VOL#14 will hate this comment, but also uni incorporating powder blue looks great. UNC, UCLA, the powder blue LA Chargers unis, etc.

For me, classic and traditional means unchanged over time.

Schools like Alabama, Texas, Michigan, Penn State and USC look the same now as they did 50+ years ago.

And I agree with you on UCLA and the Chargers’ powder blue uniforms. UNC, not so much.

There's a reason that they've stayed unchanged over time though - pretty much everybody agrees that they look good. Of those schools you mentioned, Penn St and Alabama are the schools whose unis look something less than great. Penn St...I'm all for a simple, clean look, but their unis are just a little too plain. As for Alabama, the crimson on the jersey looks OK, but the crimson on the helmets is dull and ugly. The color pops differently on the jersey than it does the helmet.

I dunno what it is, but powder blue vs Carolina blue is infinitely different in collegiate uniforms. One color looks fantastic, one is the worst uniform in sports.

The exception to powder blues: baseball. I love the game. I watch it more than any other sport. The blue unis look horrible in baseball. The Cards, Phillies, Brewers, Expos, and especially those pin striped Cub uniforms were all AWFUL. The Royals weren’t great, but they were acceptable (side note, the Royals were only acceptable because I associate Bo Jackson wearing them, and Bo Jackson could do no wrong on the baseball field.)
