It looks like the Big XII is trying to be a little proactive.

The Big 12 has drawn a line in the sand for at least two member schools.

The conference, amid a chorus of story lines that would all significantly change the face of big-league college sports, has imposed a deadline of Friday for Nebraska and Missouri to state their intentions on whether they intend to bolt for the Big Ten, with the possibility of an extension for a decision by next Tuesday, The Austin American-Statesman has reported, citing two sources.

Report: Nebraska Cornhuskers, Missouri Tigers given deadline by Big 12 - ESPN

This is ridiculous. What if nebraska and mizzou say peace out but the big ten renigs on their offer? Talk about some akward Christmas parties.

If they say they're staying, can't they still leave when an official invitation comes? Perhaps the Big 12 plans to contractually increase the $ penalties for leaving.

It's the Big 12's own fault if they start losing schools, b/c they chose to not distribute revenue evenly.

I like the fact that we may have the dominos start to fall in a week or two.

It would be weird to see the SEC change, if it came to it.

like breaking a signed contract

that's what their going for by "pledge to support the Big 12." They're setting them up that if they give the Big 12 their word and exit, there's going to be repercussions (some hell to pay)

Not sure what your happy about, If this happens the ACC most likely is going to get torn apart and left with very little.

no that's actually the Big East in that situation (the Big 10s next on lists or wants are all from those areas/teams)...still

The ACC is only going to lose maybe 2-3 teams at worst, which they're going to salvage easily

especially with that massive, new ESPN contract they got that will be earning them an annual average of $155 million

that's what the big 12 is holding them to. They're using the threat of the possible Pac-10 offers to say "ok suppose you choose to go and you don't get that Big 10 invite; we're leaving if you do. you're going to be left here by yourselves with no conference (and less money). Sure you want to risk it?"

I've heard they have until 5pm Friday, however they can get an extension on it which would make the decision date June 15th I believe

I think our commish had previously said we're not moving until the Big 10 does something first. I wonder if the Pac 10 acting would change that at all

I would think it would. Especially if one of the six was a team that the SEC wants (i.e. A&M)

The next week could be interesting. I'm not sure how much weight the Big 12 can put into that ultimatum, though.

The whole Big 10/Pac 10 exapsion talks are getting nuts. Now there is even serouis talks of Texas,Texas Tech,Oaklahoma, Oaklahoma State and Baylor all leaving for the Pac 10 while it seems Nebraska and Mizzou are headed to the B10? So is the Big 12 dead?

What can the Big 12 actually do if they break their "promise"?

the same think you can do when anyone breaks a binding contract they make:

send the lawyers to suck out the money...hit them where it hurts the most, their wallet

That assumes that they made a new contract contingent to the ultimatum.

If the Big 12 has to go after those schools based on agreements in a standing contract, I don't see what difference it makes whether Nebraska announces its exodus tomorrow or July 1.

The Big 12 can't do anything. Unless a new contract is signed, Mizzou and Nebraska can pledge their support this week and then leave the next without any further repercussions than what was already in place (there is already a buyout clause). The Big 12 is scared.

Nebraska and Mizzou should come back on Friday and say "Eff this. Why are you asking only us to commit to staying in the Big 12? Have you not heard that half of the conference might be going to the Pac 10? You give every team in the Big 12 South + Colorado the same deadline that you've given us and then we'll get back to you."

The Big 12 conference can survive without Nebraska and Mizzou. It cannot survive without Texas and Oklahoma. Beebe needs to do everything in his power to keep Texas.

I'm pretty sure that's what they're in reality asking for by "promise," not just a verbal agreement (I mean they deal with recruits, they all know how easily a "yes ok" changes to a "no" if it's not in writing somewhere)

actually from the looks of it right now, they're calling Mizzou/NEB on their stance. They're saying that if they want to play this "we MIGHT leave" game, then the rest will go ahead and actually leave.

If you're a team like MIZZOU/NEB who's waiting to see IF you actually DO get invited to the Big 10, it's no longer a safe situation.

The ones who might leave for the Pac-10 are the same ones calling Mizzou and Nebraska to make the pledge. They're making the threat that they'll leave if those two don't commit (and if the Big 10 doesn't pick them up, they're screwed). The Pac-10 move is contingent on the Mizz/Neb moves; they're not independent of each other, one's being used as a response to the other

simply put, you're not going to be getting a scenario of the two pledging followed by the south bolting to the Pac-10

looks like the other teams are pretty pissed that oklahoma and texas get a higher % of the revenue. miss and neb would definetley make more money in the big-10 and that might force texas' hand.

oh yeah, they are.

Actually OU is pretty pissed it makes less than Texas too. They're also came out of the meetings complaining about the current revenue distribution model
