I thought ours was Judge Smails.

Remember that guy's ridiculous doctoring of a sports column to back up his point in a post?

Well I guess they would technically be "theirs", but I'm talking about on this forum. You could choose either though and not be too far off.

The judge is thankfully long gone. Either that, or he returned under a new name and cleaned up his act, which I doubt.

My thing with Cal is when he was at UMass and Memphis I thought what you guys think, obviously this guy is slick and is pulling strings – how else could you get this talent to a school like Memphis? S**t city and a program with no history…That being said since he has been at UK I’ve taken a deeper interest in how he does things and in my opinion, he seems to put the interest of his kids above his own which is a character trait not shared by every college basketball coach. In addition, he goes out of his way all the time to accommodate fans (more than I would if I were coach) and more than any coach in recent UK history. For that reason (putting others before himself) I’m a fan of his and wish him success.

The above can be said for PB by the way too, I was always a fan of his.

Thank you for the complete explanation of your views.
Personally, I view him as still being the slick dirtbag who left Memphis holding the bag while he pranced off to a better job.
It would be boring if the forum contained a single view.

It would be like most of UK's boards...by the way I grant that what I know of Cal is what he (and his handlers) allow me to see - that may be less true now in the twitter age than it used to be but he knows how to cultivate his image. Is it possible he's actually a d-bag and the rest are lies/convenient truths and he's a jerk once he's off camera - sure but I would be surprised.

Or perhaps he knows how to bend the recruiting rules to his advantage and keep his tail covered so that he always has a team full of top talent, while staying a step ahead of the NCAA. And, when he's not operating in a gray area to fill his roster with blue chippers, he's a great guy to his fans, his players, and area charitable organizations.

People can have all of the different opinions they want, I just wish that all Kentucky fans would grasp this one vital concept. Cal doesn't "love" Kentucky, and he doesn't do all of this just because it is "Kentucky." If he had landed at Knoxville Carpentry Community College, he would put on the same show. His act just happens to fit Kentucky to a tee. Yes his community work is outstanding, he does put players first. But there is always a means to an end.

I didn't say VN wouldn't have known him. Ask everyone, not just the middle aged office guys perusing espn everyday.

Persuing?

Im definitely not middle aged, and I actually think quite a few on here are younger than "middle aged".

The vast majority of people who have an interest in CBB knew who calipari was 4 years ago. I'm sorry, but you're definitely in the minority. The only ones who didn't know who he was are those that are probably just now hitting their teens, which you may fall into that category.

Cal has been probably a top 5 coach as far as popularity for awhile. The camby mess, followed by the racist rant with the nets, then landing at Memphis and landing top class after top class. The guy was always in the headlines and did a good job of selling the program wherever he was at. He was as well known 4 years ago as probably Calhoun and Self, but you probably don't know those 2 either do you?

holy cow, is this serious???

calipari was one of the more popular coaches of the last 10 years. the majority of people that follow CBB knew who calipari was much longer than 4 years ago.

start a poll on VN, im willing to bet it'll be around 90% knew who he was before he came to UK.

I have to agree with BPC here and I am going to tell you why.

I grew up in east TN and now currently work in Southeast KY. The UK fans here are unlike anything I have ever seen in my life in terms of what I am used to seeing. For every die hard UK fan that actually knows a little something about basketball and sports in general you have two morons that don't watch sports at all outside of Kentucky basketball, it is the weirdest thing ever.

For every male UK fan there is an uniformed woman UK fan that doesn't even know the rules of basketball, but watches every game, trys to talk about the games at work and buys the gear, it is silly.

There are a ton of UK basketball fans that don't even bother watching the football team, lol it is hard to blame them really.

There are a portion of people here around the border that are UK basketball fans and UT football fans

bleedingTNorange you underestimate how savagely moronic these people are, UK fans are the worst.....the WORST and it is because they are so uninformed yet they feel entitled

I agree with hulk. It's the truth. For every person that follows CBB there is a granny out there who could care less about basketball other than watching the games and cheering on uk.

It's not that hard to comprehend.

My 90 year old grandma watches about 15-20 Kentucky basketball games a year and has for the last 10 or so years. She has no idea who Cal is right now let alone 4-5 years ago. All she knows is Kentucky has a handsome coach lol, at least that is all I have ever heard her say

I lived in London, ky believe me i know exactly how they are.

True, if you're counting just UK basketball fans then yes you run into that. They root for UK yet don't even know what they're rooting for.

These weren't the people I was referring to though, I was referring to people who follow CBB. BPC claims to play te game, watch other teams, and be knowledgeable about the sport, most people with that background know who calipari was long before e stepped foot in Lexington.

As I said, yes true the grannies and tag alongs of KY who don't know a basketball from a baseball probably dont know who he is still, but these same people couldn't tell you who rupp is either. He conversation was aimed more at those that actually follow the sport, like BPC claims he does. That's why I say, you put a poll up on espn or wherever and the vast majority of people are going to know who he was.

So, in conclusion, it's either inaccurate to say that the majority of UK fans didn't know who Calipari was 4-5 years ago, or it's accurate to say that the majority of UK fans are among the most uninformed "basketball fans" in the country and know extremely little about the sport they base a large part of their lives on to the point of believing that winning is their birth right.
