sjt18 is right. MAC football has improved a great deal schematically, with S&C and in player development. It is not anywhere near SEC level with talent. But they get more done with less because the players are highly self motivated to prove themselves.

So has Boise State, FAU, Middle Tenn, Louisville, Lousiana Monroe but that won't cut it in the SEC! Urban Meyer understood that when he can into the SEC an said "I want the fastest team in America" and he done that with all 4 and 5 star recruits and won bigtime and Saban is doing the same and so is Les Miles.

You do know that Saban and Miles are also from Michigan, right? Even Urban is from Ohio and played at Cincy. These are some big names winning NC's in the past decade with SEC schools. Not claiming the same with Jones. But the have to be from the south thing died a long time ago.

So, Nick Saban, Les Miles, and Urban Meyer were all good 'ole southern boys? Look, I agree that to some extent you need southern ties, but the notion that a coach from north of KY can't recruit in the south is preposterous. I don't know if this hire will work any more than the next guy, but don't act like it can't or won't before it even gets started....this coming from a good 'ole southern boy...oh, and I believe Jay Graham is a minority.

Not sure where your hearing this but not what Hubbs was saying earlier. Sounded like on the Defensive side that the DC may be the only one coming. Then bringing his OC and OL coach.

The truth is, you don't become an SEC coach until you are an SEC coach. Coaching is still coaching. When Dooley was hired, people were saying they same thing about Darin Hinshaw, and now people are praying that Jones retains him. Yes, the SEC has better players, better facilities, etc, but being an SEC coach doesn't make you better than a MAC coach. Ron Zook sucked in the Big 10 as badly as he did in the SEC. Gene Chizik actually did better in the SEC than he did at Iowa State. Let him bring his staff in, they are certainly hungry to prove they belong, and I think we will all be surprised at how quickly they become "SEC coaches."

Graham and most likely Tee Martin will be on this staff as well. Last time I checked they are minorities, since that is so important to you. Who cares if the 4 coaches Jones brings from UC are not minorities? Troll.

i don`t care who he hires as long as we get a kicker and a secondary. what we have now is not that great but it could be worse. the dc has trouble closing the outside and funneling to the middle. the oc can`t see that short routes are productive and running backs can move the ball down field. but when you have to try on 4 and long because no one on the team can kick or punt is just pee wee ball. sorry but it had to be said.

Schools in the north recruit and sign southern kids all the time and vice versa. This is thinking from an outdated generation. Notre Dame and their 'yankee' coaches took Golden Tate and Harrison Smith right out of Knoxville. Your logic is just terribly flawed. Plus Hinshaw, Graham and Tee Martin (if he comes) are southern and SEC and will be the main recruiters. So settle down, go get your tank top and jorts on and head out with your old lady for the south florida 4:30 early bird dinner special. Somehow, UT will turn this around without your input.

i just cant see how the AD went wrong, they got the best coach they could, ill say it one more time Gruden NO, Gundy NO, Strong NO, Jones YES,,,

Oh I can stick it out as I'm thick skinned as they come but apparently some on this board can't. No matter what this hire makes no sense but we will have to live with it for at least 3 or 4 years.

We all knew Dooley wouldn't last and he didn't because he was in over his head and so is Butch Jones. Again, I hope it works out but I'm sick and tired of giving coaches their dream opportunities at Tennessee expense with more losing seasons. I MEAN THIS IS TENNESSEE not Candybilt, Kensucky, Cincy, Ole Piss and Miss State for goodness sake!!!!!
