New smartphone advice

My first 2 smartphones were android devices and I really enjoyed them. 2 years ago I made the switch to the iPhone 4s and it was just ok for me. I just upgraded last week to the Samsung Galaxy S4 and am absolutely loving it. Actually having the iPhone for 2 years made me realize that, imo, Android is the superior operating system. There are customization and personalization options with Android that even a jailbroke iPhone couldn't dream of. This is just my opinion. No need for the iPhone fanboy club to get riled up.

I know these are kind of basic but it's all I've done as of yet. Search some Android forums for home screen screenshots to get an idea of what you can truly do. It is amazing what people can dream up.

Nothing fancy here either. Lockscreen has live animated weather. Was kinda cool last night during thunderstorm. Swipe left for location forecast. Swipe right to unlock.

Looks good............................for an iPhone!
LOL. jk:)
I havent gotten around to installing any more than the stock weather app yet but I did have a nice live weather wallpaper on my last android.
I'm not going to get in a pissing match about it. It's not different that Ford vs. Chevy vs. Ram. It's an argument filled with opinions where there can be no clear winner. I like the looks of your phone but I prefer Android.

It's all good. I'm not as adamant as I use to be. My girlfriend just went from an S3 to a note 3* today.

I will say that it looks like a jailbroke iPhone is more capable than I thought. I wish I liked ios because my wife and 2 of my 3 kids have iPhones. My 3 kids each have an iPod and an iPad. It would be easier for us without a doubt.

I just got an Apple TV a couple weeks ago. Great investment. Can use jailbroke iPhone, iPod, or iPad & AirPlay a ton of new movies with movie box app.

This post doesn't do anybody any good as att no longer offers unlimited data to new customers.

KD, do you have any lines on your account without unlimited data? If so, there is a loophole to use it and keep your unlimited. Costco, or any location that uses verizon eROES activation system can run an alternate upgrade to the line without unlimited data, then just change the new device back over to your line. Presto, unlimited kept. I do it on a regular basis.

Costco refuses to work with apple, so I'm not too sure about your ability to get an iphone and keep unlimited, but I can give you 100% assurance it's doable at Costco, given the salesperson knows the loophole.

As far as phones, there's a reason the S4 is near-unanimously reviewed as the best smartphone out there. I've had the iPhone 3GS, 4s, 5 and now 5s, as well as samsung galaxy s, s3 and now s4. I'll admit the cloud services offered by apple are great if you're fully in the apple system (MacBook, iPad, Apple TV) but they're still ultimately overpriced given the hardware you get. Apples intransigence on device pricing, compared to th ability to find heavily discounted devices... Also the propietary nature of apple hardware can be a pain, whereas all android hardware supports regular old micro USB.

Another phone I would consider is the LG G2. I used to hate LG, but this phone is outstanding. I got my dad one for his birthday. Spectacular screen, snapdragon 800 (currently hands down the best mobile processor on the market), battery life is superb and a standard 32gb of storage compared to iPhones 16.

Thank you...exploring this option.

The ios7 has the most hideous icons ever. They really shouldn't have messed with the icon look of the ios6. Just about every icon now is flat both in color and dimension. It makes it look like a kids toy. For a while you could avoid having to upgrade to it but your apps would slowly stop working and force you to upgrade.

I'm a Droid fan though, thankfully.

Ultimately, OP, its just gonna come down to what you're comfortable with. Go to the store, play with the different options. If I recall correctly, there might also be a return policy. Good news is that is doesn't have to be a blind pick. Some like Samsung, some like iphone, etc, but we all chose them for different reasons. Ultimately, if you're leaning one way thats the way to go.

Good lord you've been through a lot of phones. :)

I spent the afternoon at the Verizon store and decided on the Droid Maxx. The battery life, improved Google now feature, handy camera gadget, and the way it feels were deciding factors, plus only $99. Will report back.

Also, Verizon now gives former unlimited data customers the 6gb plan for $30.

In addition, they gave us $100 credit for my wifes old smartphone and informed me that I am eligible for a 22 percent employment discount on my service due to my hospital affiliation. It was a worthwhile trip.

They only give 15% for military

Also 25% on accessories. I had never heard of such a thing...probably has cost me a ton!

So far, loving the Maxx.

It's 11:00 and after fairly regular usage today, the battery is still at 62%!

Google Now seems to work better than Siri, completely hands free. The camera is awesome. The processor seems great, much faster than any phone I've used before. Web pages load instantly, apps too.

Glad you are happy. That series of phones was pretty good and nearly identical to the MotoX (software-wise). I don't think you made a bad choice.

The Google Now widget sits on my home screen. I have found it progressing nicely the last year. Having flight info and shipment tracking appear when they should is nice. And it's actually putting decent articles in there now from time to time.

Thats not exactly true. Most apps worked on 4.3 and higher. If you already had a previous version of the app it would work like normal. But really there was no reason not to update unless you were on an older device that couldn't. And by older device I mean upwards of 4 years old (an eternity in mobile). The 3GS was supported up to iOS 6 when the iphone 5 was released. The iphone 4 and ipad 2 are still supported and probably will be for at least two more updates.

Even that has changed somewhat. Since iOS 7, Apple has opened up previous versions of apps for devices that are not on/supported by iOS 7. Meaning those 3GS's still floating around can still get any apps that were on the market prior to iOS 7.

As for the aesthetics of the icons, to each their own. I like them. After a day or so of using 7 you realize how stale the look of iOS had become.
