New smartphone advice

I spent the afternoon at the Verizon store and decided on the Droid Maxx. The battery life, improved Google now feature, handy camera gadget, and the way it feels were deciding factors, plus only $99. Will report back.

Also, Verizon now gives former unlimited data customers the 6gb plan for $30.

What did your wife get? Wasnt she wanting an iphone?

Glad you are happy. That series of phones was pretty good and nearly identical to the MotoX (software-wise). I don't think you made a bad choice.

The Google Now widget sits on my home screen. I have found it progressing nicely the last year. Having flight info and shipment tracking appear when they should is nice. And it's actually putting decent articles in there now from time to time.

Google now has been fantastic. I'm pretty much running as much google software as possible on my iphone, and I got a verizon galaxy s3 I tinker with from time to time. Love that hardware, but samsung bloat ware is kind of annoying. I just uninstall what I can and hide what I can't so it's not so bad, though.

She is not due for an upgrade for another month, so she assumed my older Droid. She wanted to see how this phone works out before deciding, but I really don't see her picking an iPhone unless unexpected issues arise. It really is THAT much better, IMO.

Good for you Doc.

You bought the phone I use.

The wife upgraded yesterday to a Motorola Droid Ultra. She is more into pics, it has a 5"screen with a 10 MP camera with 1080P video capture. Operating system 4.4 Kitkat. It is rated at 4.3 with 301 reviews . I pointed her in the Samsung direction but she preferred the Motorola. It was free with her upgrade. She also received $100 for her trade in. I hope she did ok.

bumping this thread because I need some help!

I'm with verizon. My S3 was dropped, kept working (but with a majorly cracked screen), but now I think the digitizer or something is about shot as the screen doesn't always come on (and if it does (when I apply pressure to the bottom of the screen area), it's hard to read, etc.)

Point being, I need a new phone, and I am not eligible to upgrade for another few months

I've always waited the 2 years and gotten a phone at a "discount" with verizon, but was going to ask yall if I could jsut buy one on amazon as an "upgrade" and sign a new 2 year contract and get that cheap price. I just want to make sure I won't have to pay an ETF (though I wouldn't think so since I'm signing a new contract)

HTC one is only $30

S4 is $50

If you use an upgrade you have to be eligible for one no matter where you buy it.

so I can't buy a phone and sign a new 2 year contract?

I thought they just didn't want you to buy a new phone and keep the same contract with a new phone. I was under the impression (though I'm probably wrong) that they don't care if you get a new phone, they just want you locked in, so they make you sign a new 2 year agreement

No. You are not eligible to buy a new phone until your contract is up, or if they're running a special. If you get a new phone you're going to be buying it a full rate.

They also can't afford to sell a phone at a subsidized price every time someone breaks or loses a phone regardless if your willing to sign up for another 2 years. You usually become eligible for an upgrade after around 18 months. Maybe you could add a line & not use one. That's about the only way around paying full price.

Your contract doesn't have to be up to be eligible for an upgrade.

With Verizon it does. They changed to the new every two a few years ago. They will run early upgrades for those who are on basic phones or in special markets from time to time though. Other than that, yes the device you want to upgrade has to be out of contract to get a upgrade discount.

Find a used one on Craigslist or maybe Ebay. Might or might not be exactly what you want, but it will at least get you through until you can renew.

Call #874 and they'll (Verizon) send you a text with when you can upgrade.

With Verixon you may be eligible to upgrade with the edge program. I do not like it personally. You can buy another phone and add a line to your plan and transfer your phone number to the new phone. I did that last year.

I know several people that added a line to get a new device. But the edge program is a terrible program.

so pretty much I'm screwed (as far as getting a cheap phone)? Don't think I can upgrade til the summer, but 75% I can't see anything on the screen

No. You just need to buy a used VZW (with functional ESN) smartphone off of ebay or Craigslist, and activate it with your current number. Maybe you can part out your S3 and once you get a new phone in the summer, you can resale the used one you find that got you to that point.

awesome, that's what I'll do.

How do I know about the ESN? I see some on ebay say "clear or clean ESN" but if they don't state it should I bid? or ask the seller first I guess

My all time favorite.

Well probably because the bill back then was only $20 a month.

Just make sure it's either unlocked or a Verizon ready phone.

I'm loving this phone. Don't get the Droid hate. My wife says the call clarity is better than anything she has heard... Like I'm on a land line.
