This is a really good post IMO. The only thing I would take issue with is the last sentence. I honestly don't see the overachieving yet.... Yet. I think CBJ is the right guy for the program, haven't seen him be the right guy on the field quite yet, if that makes any sense. And I know it's incredibly early and we all need to be patient, which was one of your points with which I agree.
But I gotta tell ya, the Oregon game drained a little faith out of me. Overachieving would've been staying within 3 tds...not giving up 59 unanswered points and losing by 65 points had they not called off the dogs. Overachieving vs Florida would've been playing disciplined football and taking advantage of Florida's turnovers and poor play.... not one upping them in both categories.
Again, it's a really good, common sense post. I still think Butch will make this program signicantly better. How much better and how quickly are the 2 questions he's gotta answer soon...unfortunately really soon.
Thanks for the comments....the overachieving statement comes from the fact that we are playing well with Freshman and walk ons in critical positions.
The Oregon game was a learning experience for everyone, players, coaches, fans and even recruits...they maybe the true number one but we will not know until the end of the season how good they are. We learned from this game because this is CBJs vision of the Vols in the years to come. Or close to it...main factor is speed.
When I saw a 310+ offensive lineman (bedard daffney) outrun a DB in the SEC...I learned very quickly speed kills.
What also amazes me is that we won the NC with a DT QB and have not recruited one since...
Fans throwing a lot of criticism at the coaches is laughable. Do fans think these Coaches are looking at fundamental mistakes on the field and ignoring them. No. There are a lot of mistakes and they are addressing them one by one.
These players have had little coaching the last 3 years. At times I felt like Dooley was drawing plays in the dirt...he would look like a deer in the headlights and simply said Overcome by Events...
the problem is that most fans are having withdrawals and flashbacks. See I just did it. I never want the program in this state of confusion again...we all learn from our mistakes and they are painful. Everybody is gun shy right now and rightfully so.
Bottom line as fans we need to let the past go and move forward...the players have...3 - 4 years we will look at this team as ground zero and say they weren't great but they played with heart and soul...they were the kick start
When we do so, we will heal...I am a diehard fan and always have been and always will be...this losing shall pass.
