Next Year Should Be Even Worse

New O-Line, same QBs, losing a lot on D. Spike's Dad has recruited well, and hopefully this class doesn't bolt, but we are have at least one more season after this of being rotten.

Nay. It's a good thing the line and thus defense will be gone because they suck.

Our OL may be a weakness on this team.

I don't look down my nose at Tennessee fans.
Ummmm this.... then....

If one is honestly evaluating the Tennessee football program over the last several years, then there aren't a whole lot of kind words to be said. So, yeah I don't have much respect for the Tennessee football program right now. Why would anyone unless they are lying?
This. To prove the point that you ARE condescending and intentionally so. We don't need an arrogant Gator fan coming here to remind us that the Vol program is down... yet you do it constantly.

But for a group that generally wants to be respected, it's amazing how little respect is given to South Carolina, Mark Richt, and a countless list of others who either beat Tennessee regularly or have given Tennessee all they can handle.
The respect I do or don't give them has nothing to do with UT. Richt has wasted alot of talent at UGA. USCe is a too big of a subject to cover here but my opinions are mine and based on looking at their team.

Even now, people are thumbing their nose at auburn, vandy, and Missouri as if any opponent can be chalked up as a win at this point in time. How fun have the last 3 trips to Kentucky been?
More of that subtle... "We're better than you so you have no right to expect to beat anyone" attitude.

I probably know more about Mizzou than anyone here btw... they are NOT a talented football team.

Some people still have the belief Tennessee can beat Georgia this year.
And so you are saying decisively that they cannot, correct? Another indirect shot?

When Tennessee has a good team that plays good football, I will say so with no reservations

More likely you'll disappear since you won't be able to pat us on the head and show us how stupid and lowly we are.

Sad but true.

If Jones can't find more productive and ostensibly more talented players than Smith and Miller, he probably isn't the man for the job though.

Nice kids and what not, but those are two of the bigger busts in recent Vol history.

Why make statements like that? Smith and Miller had offers from virtually every major college. Maybe they aren't as good as everyone thought they would be but not everyone is an All American. They have worked their ass off for this University and represented it well.

Historically, Butch's teams are better in year 2. Sometimes the difference is pretty significant.

EVERY coach worth their salt improves the most from year one to year two.

Of note- Saban (at LSU and Bama went 13-1)
Richt- 13-1
Muschamp- 12-2

By next year Butch may learn to play to the strength's of his players, rather than a system not suited for them.

I think we get a lot better on offense because this offensive line hasn't been anything of greatness no reason the guys coming up could be just as good. I know the Wr's will be better and expect Dobbs to the be the QB.

I think we will be WAY better next year. Lets face it, out online is average. So what? We have more average players to replace them: our D will be fine with same level of talent. Our WRs will be developed more and so will our QB play. And oh yeah, a one/two punch with studs named JALEN HURD & TREYVON PAULK.

I take it that was sarcasm.

It was not directed at you, but you can use it anytime you desire. LOL

The "good post" part was genuine and I'm right there with you on your point...the "grow up" part was directed at someone else..sorry if you felt like you were the target :)

I don't feel like it was a target....I have live through streaks of loses as a kid, while overseas, and in Tennessee....this has been painful not because of the team, but because of the fans...

I don't mine trolls that's part of the fun, but I do mind trolls that claim to be diehard fans and are just on the board to stir up crap.

We have identified the problems

Speed
Previous coaching regime
Discipline
Youth
Experience

These are not excuses they are facts.

Most fans are not willing to wait it out and expect instant results...it is gong to take time...it is easy to see...but the more anyone expects instant results the more painful
It becomes....board post about firing staff and coachs at this point is just dumb.

Our players love CBJ and staff. The recruits do too. They are not going anywhere...Texas is getting ready to be the Tennessee of old....

Our fan base needs maturity and patience...the effort I am seeing is 100 times better than they have displayed since 2004...first yrs under kiffin and Dooley are exceptions...difference in jones will be the effort shown next year...Kiffin left and Dooley flat out quit after first season.

Lack of Standards, attitude, leadership and effort equals losing..

We have the coach that has identified the problems and is fixing them. The players are buying into it and believing.

Honestly I think we are over achieving at the moment.

No sense in getting all worked up over next year when we still have winnable games this year. QB and WR play cant get worse, HB position will be upgraded with Freshman and maybe Pickett.
Sure the oline losses will be tough, but its not like there is nothing at all behind them. They have recruited decent at that spot.

What a pointless thread.

Agree with both.

I understand why OP and others think this is the case. We're so used to players not progressively getting better over their tenure at UT. I can only name a dozen players over the last several years that I saw great improvement from in their debut performances vs final games. I really think next year we will start to see CBJ doing more with less, if we don't already begin to see that later this season.

THIS!!! I read so often how UT should be competing because our recruiting classes were better or on par with other schools. That doesn't mean squat when the players are not coached to be incrementally better EVERY WEEK. We have been missing this aspect of coaching for 8+ years at UT. His past stops show that CBJ and this staff can develop players. This will continue to show this year (barring injury) and will definitely begin to show by 2015. Stay the course Volnation.:peace2:

This is a really good post IMO. The only thing I would take issue with is the last sentence. I honestly don't see the overachieving yet.... Yet. I think CBJ is the right guy for the program, haven't seen him be the right guy on the field quite yet, if that makes any sense. And I know it's incredibly early and we all need to be patient, which was one of your points with which I agree.

But I gotta tell ya, the Oregon game drained a little faith out of me. Overachieving would've been staying within 3 tds...not giving up 59 unanswered points and losing by 65 points had they not called off the dogs. Overachieving vs Florida would've been playing disciplined football and taking advantage of Florida's turnovers and poor play.... not one upping them in both categories.

Again, it's a really good, common sense post. I still think Butch will make this program signicantly better. How much better and how quickly are the 2 questions he's gotta answer soon...unfortunately really soon.

Just out of curiosity, since you're making predictions, based on your outlook, what kind of recruiting class do you think Butch signs in 2015 or 2016, after years of losing? How many show up to the stadium in 2015 to watch Butch lose for his third straight season? How many season tickets or donations are you planning to shell out for the next 3/4 years to watch us lose, before you expect us to be good again?

Also, weren't you saying 2015 last week? It's already been pushed back a year?

We won't have a losing season this year. We go 6-6 at the very worst. We finish top 5-7 in recruiting this yr. None of our recruits or knowledgeable fans expected us to go 10-2, win the SEC and make a BCS bowl. These recruits love the Coach's, see opportunity for early PT and being part of getting UT back to where we used to be. This class has formed a bond with each other and don't see us losing many guys and still have room for high profile guys. I would be shocked if Butch has a losing season at UT, if by some chance he does this yr I would count on it being the one and only one. But again I see us beating USA Sat, UK, Vandy, AU at home so thats 6. USCe isnt unbeatable at all and neither is Mizzou. We got a long way to go with a very young team, they are progressively getting better and will win games and get to a bowl. If some so called fans arent willing to support them then I say go join all the bandwagon Bammerr and gator fans that have popped up over the last few yrs out of nowhere.

Agreed and great, positive post!

This is what i'm hoping for as well.

Unfortunately Butch didn't follow Brian Kelly to Tennessee like he did at his last 2 jobs. I think he has much more work to do this time.

Thanks for the comments....the overachieving statement comes from the fact that we are playing well with Freshman and walk ons in critical positions.

The Oregon game was a learning experience for everyone, players, coaches, fans and even recruits...they maybe the true number one but we will not know until the end of the season how good they are. We learned from this game because this is CBJs vision of the Vols in the years to come. Or close to it...main factor is speed.

When I saw a 310+ offensive lineman (bedard daffney) outrun a DB in the SEC...I learned very quickly speed kills.

What also amazes me is that we won the NC with a DT QB and have not recruited one since...

Fans throwing a lot of criticism at the coaches is laughable. Do fans think these Coaches are looking at fundamental mistakes on the field and ignoring them. No. There are a lot of mistakes and they are addressing them one by one.

These players have had little coaching the last 3 years. At times I felt like Dooley was drawing plays in the dirt...he would look like a deer in the headlights and simply said Overcome by Events...

the problem is that most fans are having withdrawals and flashbacks. See I just did it. I never want the program in this state of confusion again...we all learn from our mistakes and they are painful. Everybody is gun shy right now and rightfully so.

Bottom line as fans we need to let the past go and move forward...the players have...3 - 4 years we will look at this team as ground zero and say they weren't great but they played with heart and soul...they were the kick start

When we do so, we will heal...I am a diehard fan and always have been and always will be...this losing shall pass.

Unfortunately Butch didn't follow Brian Kelly to Tennessee like he did at his last 2 jobs. I think he has much more work to do this time.

Following Kelly didnt help him in Cincy, especially year 1. See that mentioned all the time but I am just not that sold on B. Kelly. Yes he had a good yr last yr but with a great Defense and alot of those werent his recruits and Kelly is supposed to be a big Offense guy and his offense's have not been that good at ND. This year even their D isnt that good now with it being alot of his recruits. They got smoked by Mich, Purdue and Mich St both could have and should have beaten them. Then compare Butch and Kelly recruiting at C.Mich and Cincy, Butch had better recruiting classes than Kelly. Only difference at UT is that Butch is walking into a mess that Dooley left but still see him improving us every week and year and by yr 3 competing for the SEC and ending all these losing streaks to our biggest Rivals and lack of SEC and top 25 wins.

somewhere down the line, i hope the vols start suiting up linebackers who can do a sub-5 40 again.

Yep. Throughout CBJ's career, he has a .462 winning pct. in year one. After year one, his winning pct. is .745. I happen to believe that having a group of players in year two of CBJ's system is more valuable than a group of folks that have simply "been here" under a multitude of coaches with no continuity.

After seeing plenty of negative posts being made by UT haters, why don't the moderators just ban all of the non-UT fans on here?
