Neyland Stadium name change?

NO, NEVER. The man not only served our great university but also his country admirably. Also, if I am not mistaken we followed his master design for the stadium as well for a long time. We should never take away this man’s and family’s honor by even reconsidering to rename our stadium.

John Ward was a great radio personality and his dedication to his craft also benefitted the university in many ways. We should find a unique way of honoring his service if we have not already.

I thought they had named the press box in his honor. If not, they should.

Would you ever consider changing the name of Neyland Stadium? It was Shields–Watkins Field (1921–1962). Things were a lot different then. I know he was a good coach and such but you know maybe it’s time to reconsider it. Myself I’d like to see it named John Ward Stadium. Just a thought.

Please, research General Robert Neyland. You will then realize why the stadium is named after him, rather than a radio/media personality.

Oh, it is still called Sheilds-Watkins Field.

Wow, congrats because you actually may have made a thread dumber than the one saying we should leave the SEC. It's still Shields-Watkins Field by the way, would expect an actual vol fan to know this. GTFO.

I’m not trying to throw shade at Neyland and I know he was a general but my uncle KIA 1944 so you know let’s get passed that. As Bob Dole said if your visiting the WWII memorial Washington DC area and don’t understand what the 400 stars represent on the wall you kind of missing the point.

The board of trustees named the fourth-floor broadcast area of the Neyland Stadium press box the John Ward Broadcast Center in fall 1995.

Andy Holt Avenue between Volunteer Boulevard and Melrose Avenue is the Joe Johnson/John Ward Pedestrian Mall.

Stop digging. Your other suggestion was to name the stadium after the guy that hired and then extended Jeremy Pruitt.
