Neyland Stadium to be “preserved” by Pilot

Well that changes my perspective on this a good bit.

As much as we like tradition, this actually is a decent way to keep traditions in place and get the $$$$$ to be absolutely top-tier in the new NCAA landscape.

Won't like seeing the logo on the field, but this certainly takes some of the sting out of it. It was inevitable.

That being said, Food City should take some notes on how this was done, but doubt they care.

Totally agree, but TBA was a much easier target as the building or the name doesn't have a fraction of the iconic status of Neyland Stadium.

The college hoops equivalent would be changing Cameron Indoor Stadium to Food Lion Center.

Exactly. There will be some here that complain....the Legions of the Miserable will apparently never die. This is a great deal for UT, the players, and us fans though IMO.
Great deal for the fans? Bet the ticket prices don’t go down. No matter how much money pours into the program they just keep raising prices on “us fans”. This whole system is a house of cards waiting for a stiff wind.

It will probably be renegotiated well before then. With the way things are going the contract might be way undervalued in just half that time.
They don’t renegotiate these until it nears completion. If it’s successful, expect double or triple the current value.

Part of my distrust of this current announcement is exactly because of Food City and Thompson Bowling Arena. It seems to my memory like we were promised that the actual name of the Arena would always be preserved and emphasized.
But as time went on it became more and more like TBA at Food City. The name of the place became a mere abbreviation while Food City became the most recognizable part of the name.
I fear that Pilot may start off with just a small logo on the field. But once you let the camel stick his nose under the tent wall, you can no longer keep him out.

It will be like the foul line nets in baseball stadiums. After a while you won't even notice.

Raise your hand if you’re not dumb enough to know in about five or so years it will be called Pilot Neyland Stadium.

They are not putting that kind of money not to brand.

Remember the big/major stadium renovations that were to take place during and just before Fulmer’s tenure as AD?

When the losing begins, the money flows dry up. If (major if) CJH doesn’t compete at a high level, that stiff wind will blow a lot down!

Has anyone seen how much the naming rights is actually worth over 20 years? As inflation goes, Fulmer was one of the highest paid coaches 20 years ago and now guys are making 10 times that amount.

Honestly for the money they are spending they could have named it Pilot Field. As long as the place stays Neyland Stadium, it is fine with me.

Why do y'all care that it's named Neyland Stadium with an *? College football is dead. Has been for awhile. It's all about the dollars and who can get the most to buy the best players. Own that. Sell the stadium name like all of the pro leagues do.

Tennessee vs Alabama? Come on. It's Pilot vs their sponsor. That's the future. Why wait? Soon as one big program does it the rest will fall in line.

College football as we knew it is gone and in the past.

…dat’s some grouchy old basturdin’ going on up there… ⬆️

No, it's a slow burn. What is the difference? Take more money and call it Pilot Stadium. Leave Neyland on the pressbox or something. The objective is to win titles.

Every report I've seen has stated the amount has not been disclosed. At some point it will have to come out.

The TBA Food City deal was $20 million over 10 years so it's likely this would be more than $2 million a year.

College football has been slowly being sold off since the networks got involved with the bowls, then conferences. That change thing. Some people have a difficult time adjusting to new paradigms.
College sports are probably the last sport to get ads like this.

NASCAR tracks have had ads on the walls for decades. There was a time long ago when NHL hockey rinks didn't have ads on the dasher boards, now they have advanced from painted ones to animated computer generated ones. MLB baseball has had ads to the side of homeplate for years. F1 also has computer generated ads all over the infield.

I'd rather have commercial ads than the NFL/NBA "End Racism" crap.
