Did you know that only 2.4% of players that play college football make it in the NFL?? I would even say that stat goes lower over the course of the next 3 years in the NFL for said players.

I think Dooley is going to take the right approach and help us keep guys in school and keep our attrition rates MUCH lower, while he has guys who have talent and are very coachable. High Character means so much more than morals, IMO. It has to do with the ability to learn, finish things, make the right decisions, and many other things.

Good post Eric. It's good to see some "glass half full" type guys around here.

One could make the argument that being able to put a significant percent of that 2.4 means a lot in regards to winning and recruiting.

Basically you're saying only the best get in.

So since it's so hard to do, don't bother trying.

Oh, I don't disagree, but you have to get those solid prospects that will contribute for 4-5 years at a reasonable level. It's actually less than that, .2%, before they hit college for their freshman year.

I agree 100%. I stated a while back that I think a team of high character kids can win a lot of ball games. Which one is going to lay it all on the line in the 4th qtr when they're tired and the game looks like it could be a loss but we want a W? Who's going to be the ones that continue to fight and give absolutely everything they have and lay it all on the line and not give up until that final second is off the clock? High character kids will come to work everyday with their mind set on working, be willing to learn everything they can from the coaching staff, and lay everything on the line every play. They will always work. With talent combined we'll be a damn good team.

I understand where you're coming from, and I agree for the most part. But, I don't think that's what recruits want to hear, and I doubt that is what Coach Dooley is telling them.

That would be a nice foundation to build on for the immediate future. But knuckleheads help win rings too.

Perfect example, Albert Haynesworth. Took a TON of plays off in college, and does it in the pros. He has the potential to be the most dominant DT in the game, he just doesn't want it enough. :whistling:

Dooley isn't promising them anything. In fact, almost every article I have read, Dooley tells them they can compete, but they aren't promising them crap other than hard work.

If all you're talking about is character, it's usually because you don't have any talent.

So, what are you going to say when Dooley lands these guys who will work hard to become NFL talent and helps us win games, yet they are the 3* guys people seem to want to give Dooley crap about??

But you know that he is telling them that his staff can get them to the NFL. I certainly believe they can, but you're right. It does take hard work and dedication.

I think he doesn't say that very often, if ever really. I think he understands that staff can only do so much to get you there, it's more about personal desire to become great that gets you over the top. I think he just wants kids to come to UT because of UT. NFL is just a reward of that hard work.

I don't give a rat's ass about Rival rankings or stars.

I want wins. I could care less if they beat up old ladies and can't spell their names.

All I'm say is talking about how much character a kid has is usually a cop out for saying "he tries really hard, he's just not that good"

Elite athletes usually want to make money playing the sport they love.

A coaching staff can prepare kids for the NFL. I don't see how you can't see that.

Wow, yeah I don't think that would be good at all. Of course, there are plenty of people on here that would sell their grandmothers for wins for a football team they have no input on at all. That doesn't stop them from going over the top in their posts though.

I'd much rather have a team full of 3 stars that lay it on the line, than a team full of 4 and 5 stars that only come to play half the time. The 3 stars will always prevail in this scenario.

They can coach them, teach them, and encourage them EVERYDAY, but if the prospect thinks that his talent alone will get them to the NFL, then they are going to fall flat on their face.

I guess that was the cop out for Tebow too, his Heisman and two national championships aren't all that impressive. but he is a high character kid.

Eh, now I think you are taking it too far in the other direction. Underrated 3*s that play as 4* and above, and one thing, but saying that everyone who is the 3* will prevail over the 4* and above guys on other teams is stretching it too.

I agree here. Tebow helped Florida win multiple NC's, and he's a high character guy. These are the guys we want here, and these are the guys Dooley is trying to find us.

Yep, every 4 and 5 star prospect is obviously lazy and a me type player.

I forgot.

I was just saying I would rather see someone give their all like Nick Reveiz than to watch someone who you know is better than they are playing, they just don't try, kinda like watching Brent Vinson or Demetrice Morley.
