NIL and Tennessee

Would be nice if White Danny would back down some of those rate hikes for the season ticket holders for their football, basketball and baseball seats, kind of hard to plow meaningful money into the NIL cooperative when the costs continue to roll upward on the current seating arrangement, under current rules, don't think the NCAA would look favorably on linking NIL contributions to university seating but White Danny needs to understand both monsters cannot be fed and fully funded by the same donor pool.
Would be awesome if he'd knock $300 off the $5,000 donation fee if you're a member of Spyre.

Received an email from Spyre that they currently have fewer than 2,000 members.

We have a HUGE AND PASSIONATE fanbase. This number is embarrassingly low.

Spyre is currently pushing for 10,000 members.

This will help every UT sport. Tennessee finally has great leadership in place. We can make Tennessee s great place for elite recruits again.

Memberships start as low as $5 a month.

If you're already a member, great! Spread the word.

If you are on the fence, now's the time! Will from Spyre is here to answer any questions.

If you hate NIL and want nothing to do with it, that's fine. I'm not here forcing you to donate.

I'm only asking everyone, if they can, to support UT athletics.

I have been signed up. And OP you are correct that low number is embarrassing. One would think this fan base is passionate. But are they really? I have a hard time believing that at least 100k TN fans could not afford $5 dollars a month.

But I bet many of them will hit Starbucks multiple times a week and get an overrated 5-7 dollar cup of coffee. If TN NIL game is to really get to the elite level we need it to, fans are gonna have to step up. Now we are seeing just how much this fan base really cares about this football team.
You act like an overpriced coffee (or anything else) is less valuable way to spend one’s money. Utility derived from spending is quantifiable only up to the point that someone no longer spends money on it. I.e coffee’s go to $10 I stop buying but at $7 I buy every day. You can’t speak for others on what they derive the most joy from; supporting NIL or coffee (or anything else deemed futile in your estimation).

They have nice polos too, comp stickers galore. Great stuff like you’d get from traditional soccer fan clubs in Europe & LatAm.

Interested to discuss where the donations go if the marketers come to Spyre with deals for the athletes. I think the donations go to Spyre, which Spyre uses to pay clients for appearances for the Volunteer Club, plus Spyre connects their athlete clients with deal offers from marketers like a traditional agent.

Anyone know for sure?

They certainly seem to be on the cutting edge of the market and with strong effort to remain above board.

Please don't turn this thread into a pissing contest. You're right, everyone should spend their money on what they want. Let's move on now.

For everyone that's donated so far, amazing! Let's keep this gravy train rolling!

It was an example. Like I said I find it hard to believe that almost anyone could not afford $5 a month if you are a true TN Vol fan.

How’s it a pissing contest? Dude says there’s no excuse for people not to donate when they spend money on other frivolous things. Coffee aside, the issue with the collectives in my opinion is some people are going to have to decide between donating to them or the university/purchasing tickets because there’s only so much money to go around. I’ve not got into the Volunteer club to date due to having football and baseball tickets and feeling for my enjoyment my money is better spent in that way. I’ll admit I’m naive on the NIL collectives from the standpoint that I was under the assumption that the player deals are defacto endorsements from businesses/organizations who “expect an ROI” on their investment in said player or the players earning their own way via merchandise, events, etc. I don’t understand how the general public’s money given to a conglomerate winds up in the hands of the players nor why it should.

You know it will turn into a pissing contest. I've seen these NIL threads. Thanks for not going that route.

As to your other points, if you have season tickets then you are directly supporting UT athletics. No problems here! Thanks for supporting UT athletics.

NIL was meant to be a way for players to earn money off of their name, image likeness. In a perfect world, that would mean business owners paying players.

Sadly, that is not how it works.

I'll try to keep this short, but let's first start with what Spyre does (I learned most of this from their Q&A, but Will correct me if I'm wrong):
- facilitates sponsorships for players with local businesses
- also offers endorsements to players to sign merchandise, attend meetings, etc...
- using a third party, handles the payment system for players and potential taxes etc...
- can legally now work directly with the university

90% of every dollar goes directly to the players. The rest is used for overhead.

You're right in regards that the general public's money should not be used for NIL. That was not it's purpose, but it is being used that way.

Tennessee currently has a top 10 class. Deep pocket boosters are Spyre's primary donors.

However, the question you have to ask yourself, and the question I asked myself is this:

I spend a lot of time and money on UT athletics. I may not agree with the structure of NIL, but is $25 (or $5 no judgement here) a month worth helping Tennessee sports become better?

To me it was. It's up to you to decide.

We should split into 3 miniature TN's. East TN is the cool part of TN anyway. Rocky Top caan be our state anthem and Heupel can be our coach and governor.

Stop with this crap. I'm so sick of some people (not all) in East Tennessee acting like UT is the University of East Tennessee. Our tax dollars go to UT, that stadium is full of Middle Tennesseans on Saturday, the student body is full of Middle Tennessee kids, and guess what? Top Middle Tennessee recruits do a LOT more for UT's program than East Tennessee kids. Derek Barnett, Rashaan Gaulden, Jauan Jennings, Jalen Hurd, Ty Chandler, Jalen Reeves-Maybin, Caleb Herring, Arion Carter, and others were top (4* or better) Middle Tennessee kids who chose UT. When East Tennessee produces a top ranked recruit, he goes to Clemson or aTm. Maybe East Tennessee should start pulling its weight before claiming sole ownership of UT.

Same applies to the people who want to disclaim Memphis and West Tennessee. That area has also been good to UT. And, like it or not, Nashville and Memphis are the two largest cities with the most culture, the most recruiting talent, and the most money. It's ALL Tennessee. Stop being divisive.

I joined at the very beginning. I also got to meet those in charge at the tailgate at the Orange Bowl. It was a pleasure meeting them. They do a great job of keeping us informed. I believe that it will only continue to grow. Everyone needs to jump on board. Go Vols!!
