you mean immediately before Pearl right? Because UT had plenty of recognition at other times in its basketball history

and I didn't go to extremes in either case. Extreme would be someone starting a poll over whether Pearl should be rehired after his show-cause

When in tn basketball history did tn get as much national recognition and play on national primetime tv in the regular season as often as we did under pearl?
Simple question that is rhetorical.

Great point. Such a comparable situation. Why not bring up Tusculum or some other school not in Div. 1A.

It's absolutely comparable. He said Tennessee was "on the map" because they were good at some point in history.

No, it's not. It's a stupid comparison. Tennessee was relevant in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Yale wasn't.

UT won the conf and went to the sweet 16 in 2000. Big difference between then and 1927 right?

Yeah, Mears beat #1 South Carolina on their home court. Check his record against KY, the premier team in the conference and see how it compares to Pearl.

Let's see, Pearl beat two #1's, won a few NCAA games that Mears never did and consistently beat the premier team in the conference in Florida. I'd say that's pretty comparable.

I'm gonna stay out of the basektball forum. Don't want to rub you the wrong way, and I respect your opinion.

I do however enjoy how conference titles mean jack **** in this forum until you can use one to support your position. Good day. :hi:

conf titles mean plenty in this forum. Bruce has one too and no one has denied that. The argument was whether we had been relevant prior to 2005 and I contend we have

Guess you really don't want to look at the comparison of records against KY, who clearly is the premier team in the conference. Don't look at their ranking when UT beat them either, it might diminish your argument. You could also look at Devoe's record against KY, Green's record against KY. But I really don't expect that you want to do that.

I agree with that 100%. I think where we differ is our opinion of "on the map." I'd contend that implies some sort of national relevancy, which I don't think UT had anytime (recently and/or consistently) before Pearl.

Fair enough. I thought we were going with the early 2000 angle. If you want to say they put us on the map 35 years ago, and we've been there the ever since then we can agree to disagree.

Yea, in the late 1990s and early 2000s, we just won a conference title, multiple east titles, and made a sweet 16. What a joke of a program.

Your argument was the premier team in the conference at the time. In Pearl's tenure, it was Fla. In Mears' tenure, it was Ky. Pearl owned Fla and Mears held his own against Ky.

KY has always and will always be the premier team in the conference. Florida was simply a blimp in a short time frame.

We were nationally relevant then, all over ESPN. Again, we can agree to disagree. I want to stay here and discuss without getting banned. :good!:

For God's sake, nobody in this thread is arguing that Pearl didn't do a great job at UT. I'm not even sure that anybody is disputing that Pearl was the best basketball coach Tennessee has ever had; the sport was so different when Mears was coach that it's like getting in an argument over whether Bill Belichick or Vince Lombardi was better. So why is it that for so many Pearl fans it has to be absolute? "UT basketball was NOTHING before Pearl." "UT basketball was NEVER ANYTHING until Pearl." "Pearl MADE UT basketball. Period." Why does it have to be absolute like that? Some of you guys are like a woman who goes through her new husband's stuff and makes him burn all the pictures of his ex-girlfriends.

I'm old enough to remember watching Bernard King play when I was a kid. I've been a UT basketball fan my whole life. Since I've been watching, we've been A) really good for awhile, then B) pretty good for awhile, then C) horrible for awhile, then D) back to pretty good for awhile, then E) back to crappy, and then finally F) good again. It's been a rollercoaster, not a wasteland. Just because you're a fan of Pearl doesn't mean you have to tear down everything that came before it.

that would be fine except Bruce didn't put UT basketball on the map

Wade Houston put us on the map with a 61pt loss at Kentucky. I remember seeing the highlights all over SportsCenter.

My point was the two are comparable in that Bruce brought UT basketball to the forefront. He made 3 Sweet 16's and one Elite Eight. He won more tourney games in 6 years than the program had in their entire history.

I don't care that it was harder to get into the NCAA tourney when Mears was coach. Under the current guidelines he got us to the postseason every year he was here and we advanced in the SEC tourney every year but his first two. I view it the same as those idiots who try and discount what Fulmer did in the 90's because the SEC sucked overall. Wasn't Fulmer's fault and he did win.

The last comment I have still goes back to "on the map" or "relevant". Before the 'aa issues, If you polled those up to about age 40-50 in the 50 states and asked them what comes to mind in regards to tn basketball, they would say nothing, ernie/Bernie, or bp. Nationally, nobody gave a flip about ut between ernie/Bernie and bp. Regarding locally relevant, obviously some long time fans disagree with the term, relevant. It's ok to be objective, no matter which side of an argument you are on, but the national recognition isn't really debatable.

FYP

You're not really coherent enough for me to have any idea what your argument is or if you even have one. All I know is that you can't talk about Pearl on this forum without hearing that NOBODY CARED NUTHIN BOUT VOL BASKETBALL AFORE PEARL AND YOU KNOW IT! from a bunch of bandwagon-jumping jackholes. It's all in this thread. It's all in every Pearl-related thread. It's stupid.
