They weren't at their worst. They kept their composure. They competed. They were well coached and prepared. They shot 46% from 3 and 44% from the field. They got Miss State to commit 23 fouls including their best player fouling out. They had 4 players in double figures.
They just got beat.
Exactly. UConn actually played a couple of worse games this year (Florida State, Tulane). And they weren't exactly lights out against UCLA.
MSU limited Collier and that was key, and they clogged up the passing lanes which is the heart of UConn's offense. And they matched or surpassed UConn's hustle. In the first quarter it almost looked like the teams had changed uniforms... instead of the famous early UConn surge it was MSU that was playing loose and taking it to them. UConn came back from the 16 point deficit, but it gave MSU the confidence to keep playing hard. UConn's lack of depth hurt them... Butler was clearly over-matched.
I was very glad that the Dillingham foul on Samuelson didn't decide the game. The foul call was arguably legit -- but maybe not the flagrant. You could see that the refs were struggling with it. If UConn would have scored on the extra possession and won the game it would really have tainted what was otherwise a great game.
UConn will have more weapons next year. But so will some other teams. And what folks here say all year is true -- their conference schedule assures them of a #1 seed but it doesn't help get them ready for the Tourney. They hadn't played a true Top 20 team since mid-February. Even their players admitted that the toughest competition they had seen is six weeks was at practice.
One more thing. Mississippi is really good. Really. Beating Baylor and UConn was no fluke. (I still think Louisville over Baylor in 2013 was really a bigger upset, but with the way the media was playing up the UConn streak I'm sure they'll be touting this game as a bigger one.)
And I bet Vic wishes he were playing Stanford instead of another matchup with SC.
I'm looking forward to Sunday's game. We'll see if MSU can continue to play loose... it sure won't be an upset now if they win it all. And it sure is nice to see two SEC teams on top.
