Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2023-24

The WaPo article was a big old nothing to those of us who have been following WBB for a long time. I was actually surprised that it kind of painted Mulkey in a more sympathetic/positive light with the whole “this is how she was made/this is the environment she came from” narrative. At worst, from a coaching perspective, maybe sometimes her comments got a little to personal or she did/said things without realizing how they’d be perceived by others. This is not a defense of Mulkey because I can’t stand her and want her to lose every game. But this article was basically nothing.

The LA Times article about LSU was uncalled for though and I do agree with Mulkey calling that out. Some of the wording of that article towards the LSU players was way more malicious than it needed to be.

Indeed.. Very disturbing. How can a person who makes $7 million a year let her Father live in a trailer,?

Cause he walked out on his wife and young daughter.

You can fault her for a lot of stuff. This ain't it.

She can treat him however she wants and its for none of us to judge it. Go spend some time with Big Brothers/Big Sisters and discover the impact parents abandonment has on these kids. Its devastating. So yeah f him.

Yes, in theory..... However, many of the kids going to places like LSU have a parent who thought it best to let a handler make decisions for their kid's basketball career. These parents don't understand the consequences either.
Do you really believe that handlers/influences are not involved at all the top schools that actually recruit elite players? If they aren’t involved, it usually means you aren’t recruiting elite players.

Lol. I don't think I said that. Some coaches take advantage of that scenario and some don't. Mulkey is one who does and when someone who does has a single-minded goal of winning, they can be dangerous for vulnerable parties.

What!! You mean like adults who might say “no, we will not take that picture of you in an overly sexualized manner”. Those people??? According to some folks on here 19-21 year olds are adults and fully capable of making all their own decisions.😂😂😂😂😂

I know it's Easter and everything, but religion is NEVER a safe topic. Espec when you're the self proclaimed queen of inclusion and say this:

Praise part = ok. You're crazy if you don't part = not ok.

Dawns right tho lol… imo it’s pretty consistent. Also it’s HER OPINION. They mad their leader thinks less of them. That’s Dawns prerogative

Of course it's her opinion and prerogative. But it's not inclusive at all to dismiss folks who feel differently as somehow impaired. Dawn has said this to us many, many times over the years. Makes it a tad hypocritical. Sure she wishes she hadn't said it.

It doesn't even make sense if one is a believer. Does God fix basketball games based on the religious fervor of the participants?
Right. That makes the whole thing uncomfortable. They've flirted with this all year, about being somehow 'favored'. I get being grateful for what you're given, but in the case of sports, what does that make the other team? Unfavored? Territory to stay away from.

I don’t listen to anything from people on that Sc side, just like their Pg said after that miracle shot against us, that was God that made it go in, like God favors them over us. I don’t even like talking about them but I had to reply.

LOL Coach Dawn, who I admire in many respects, just may tilt over into extreme self righteous territory from time to time.

It’s literally just a saying… an idiom even. It’s not that deep. So funny to see the spiraling tho. She owes no one inclusion.

We can all have our opinons for sure. Mine is DS owes everyone inclusion since she's made it a central tenant of her public career. Or she can be ok with an incident of being hypocritical.
I read elsewhere that she said that God gets the glory whether they win or lose. If that's what she said, that answers your question.
That part was fine. The troubling part was where she said there's something wrong with anyone that doesn't believe in God.

Well, theologically-speaking, she's not wrong. Traditional, orthodox Christianity says there's something wrong with all of us from the moment of conception that separates humans from God and that requires a miraculous intervention to cure.

Or she may be appealing to science and reason.

I also don't get the outrage over the LA Times piece that has prompted an apology from Cori Close for retweeting. She said she would never support anything that invoked racism, sexism, or misogyny.

So many mixed messages these days. Women are as tough as men and should be regarded equally. Trash-talking is just part of the game. Brawls just demonstrate competitive fire.

Okay, good so far.

But let some writer try to glom onto a familiar sports narrative...good guys vs bad guys...and some people lose their minds. "Villains?" "Dirty debutantes?" Those are now taboo when describing women's teams? Remember Detroit's Bad Boys Pistons? Oakland's mean men Raiders vs Dallas's America's Team? Anybody get crazy over those depictions, or was that just regarded as sports hype and drumming up eyeballs?

I mean, when someone tries to trademark herself as "Bayou Barbie" (which sounds kind of insulting if you think about it), is "Dirty Debutantes" a horrible insult? After all, the writer called UCLA "America's Sweethearts" (when asked, players said they sort of liked that but stressed that it didn't mean they were "soft" on the court).

Evidently feeling some backlash, the Times edited out the two "offensive" terms. Just for good measure, they also edited out a reference to UCLA as "milk and cookies."

How soft we've become.
