Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2023-24

No coach that I can think of has lost a national championship with a roster of 5 starters going to the W either.

So there is that. Every coin has two sides.
So, are you insinuating that the statement you posted diminishes the accomplishments of her 2023-24 team or the 22-23 team? You are being very disingenuous.

In 2023 SC missed out on one banner but they did hang three. How many coaches have ever had 5 starters drafted in the same year by the WNBA? Sounds like that's worth another banner.
Muffet Mcgraw was the first to do it if I remember correctly. She did win the national title that year with about seven healthy bodies.

But after having 5 starters drafted by the WNBA did Muffet win a national championship the following season? That's what makes Dawn's accomplishment so incredible as most teams rebuild after losing that many starters.

She had 5 Starters drafted, most of which were either All-Americans or the Best of the Best from the country they came from and didn't win a National Championship and then she was able to put a team on the floor loaded with all Americans the following season with a 6-7 post who was one of the best from Brazil. Dawn Recruits well and most of the players sitting behind those starters returned and were 5 star players. Player-wise, she should have had back-to-back national championships. Her X's & O's and wait your turn mentality lost her that championship 2 years ago which should have been a done deal.

She has 1 loss over the past two seasons. Recruiting is as strong or better than ever. She is doing fine, not even CPS won it every year she had the best team. No sign of a letdown here, I’d say much ado about nothing tbh.

edit: I do realize some coaches are polarizing, and certainly Coach Staley is in that category for some. But I try not to nit pick her actual results as the coach or question her X’s and O’s for example like some do due to her being at the top of the game currently. Just seems petty to pick at someone doing so well. I sure wish she did a few things differently with her teams, but I’m a fan of the game and I realize I’m not a D1 coach, let alone one with some national championships. I don’t ever want to be the guy who thinks he/she knows more than someone actually getting it done at the highest level in any endeavor. As I age I have learned that second guessing or critiquing the most successful people is mostly a wasted trip.

Dawn lost the 2023 championship due to the lack of a consistent 3 point shooter. Had Paopao been on that team the game wouldn't have been close. Dawn learned her lesson from that loss and has since gone after 3 point shooters. Freshman Tess Johnson's 3 pointers were key to the win in this year's championship.

Couldn't let this day go by without taking note of the incredible comeback in the 9th by the baseball Vols to walk it the F off in their first college WS game. Love John Wilkerson's call, love these guys reactions. If the LVs ever win a natty again, I pledge to go jump in the pool, even though it will be early April!

So, will V-Viv continue to play pro ball every year? Seems to me that she (like Rhyne Howard at Florida) will miss a heckuva lot of scouting/recruiting time while playing herself. On one hand I'm happy for these women to get these opportunities to do both. It's a perfect scenario for them personally. But on the other hand, I could see how the players at Mississippi State and Florida might feel short changed by having a coach available only part-time. Also, it might feel a little unfair to the other assistants who are (I'm assuming) working full time for (possibly?) less money.

After thinking about it more, I'd guess the college assistant salaries of Viviens and Howard are more likely to be a notch or two below that of the full-time assistants. Anyone have that salary info?

Since programs can now have so many "assistants" I think in most cases these are honorary positions more to be motivational to current players and attractive to potential transfers. Since they can't be year round positions I'm sure they are paid less.

This is something I could totally see Jordy doing, esp if the old staff was still here.

Jordy is just a doll of a person who seems to have truly loved her years at Tennessee, so yeah, I would love to see her back in Knoxville someday. Right now all five assistant positions are filled so we know that won't be happening anytime soon. Maybe someday!

I don't know how "fine" is measured in the SEC but I doubt it means a championship. Geno hasn't won a national title in seven years and is not picked to win one in 2025. SC has defeated UConn 4 out of the last 5 meetings and the game is in Columbia next season. Dawn says it's harder to win the SEC than it is to win a national championship. SC's closest game this year was in the SEC and it took a Hail Mary to win it.
Dawn might say that but it isn't true.

--well it hasn't been true. Maybe it will be true going forward.

South Carolina net revenue by sport in FY2023

  • Men’s basketball: $3.61 million ($7.95 million expenses, $11.56 million revenue)

  • Women’s basketball: minus -$5.72 million ($10.78 million expenses, $5.05 million revenue)

The big thing about the huge increases in TV ratings is that eventually the contracts with the networks will reflect that and much more money will be flowing to the top WBB programs.

lol no it won’t. Those ratings are now in the wnba.

Women’s college basketball viewership will slam back to earth next season.

At some point people will have to face the facts that Clark was, is and will be THE draw.

Lol. All types of WBB have had improved ratings and crowds, not just Iowa. Women's sports such as softball and gymnastics are also seeing jumps. So, I think there will be some drop in ratings next year but still much higher than it has been the past. This will help the revenue in the long run.
My working hypothesis is that a lot of women who benefited from Title IX and played in high school/college are now grown with disposable income and time. We’ve brought our families along in some cases!

It was certainly true in 2022 when SC lost two SEC games including the tourney championship but still managed to win a national championship. I don't know how many other conferences have had two members meet for a national championship but it happened in 2017 when SC defeated MSU. Except for an unguarded miracle shot by Kamilla, SC would have lost in this year's SEC tournament semi-finals. The day in and day out grind and physicality of the SEC season is not like any other conference. With highly ranked Texas and Oklahoma added to the league, winning the SEC will become an even greater challenge. All year the PAC 10 was rated as the strongest WBB conference yet not one of their teams progressed beyond the elite eight.

.
sC has 8 SEC championships or 16 if you want to count tourneys and 3 National Championships.

1 year ago it went undefeated vs SEC but lost in Final Four.

next year the SEC will likely have a great argument for best league, but probably could not say that for the previous decade.
