Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2023-24

Intriguing team to follow:

The Tennessee State women's basketball team is coached by first-year coach Candice Dupree, a player I always enjoyed watching in college (at Temple, coached by Dawn Staley) and in the WNBA.

Interestingly, two of her assistants are Treasure Hunt (Chattanooga native, onetime UK player) and fellow Temple alum Lady Comfort.

They've started their season at 2-0, and the players appear to love her. Anyway, I didn't know if there might be other folks here like me who try to keep tabs on other teams around the State of Tennessee. This coaching trio is interesting!

That sounds familiar. When did we last play them?

WBB is still top heavy but there is enough talent to go around now that surprises are going to happen. I can't see anyone going undefeated and that includes SEC conference games. The parity is going to get more widespread now that WBB has become a hot commodity. The end of season standings are going to be quite different this year. It will be extremely difficult to repeat. That said.....here's hoping we do.

Dawn thinks the Lady G's may be better than last year???? A huge test will happen on 11/24 when they play at UCLA.

Dawn says you learn a lot from close games with top ranked teams and not much when you beat a team by 50.

She knows they are not, it's coach speak. But she is spot on about learning more by playing tougher teams.

Rivers was a no show
And SC gotta get used to not playing wit milla and Chloe didn’t play but they’ll jell but don’t see them going undefeated in conference
That is the reason the SC offense has started off looking out of sync. They are trying to build an alternative method of play outside of prioritizing the post all of the time. It will take them a few weeks to get it much smoother.

We've played them four times in the regular season beginning in 2013-14, typically doubling up on them scoring-wise. I only vaguely recall that program being a draw for smaller, quick guards, but might be misremembering.

I've spent a lot of years now worrying about smaller, quicker guards that it's going to take a while to get used to having that kind of quickness in orange. 🥹

I agree and can’t wait to see finished product
Yep....they have the shooters to play a perimeter game once they learn how to space themselves better off the ball. Last season they mostly took the open shots that were there, like low hanging fruit. As a result, they shot 40% from three as a team. This year they are trying to create more perimeter shots by ball movement. The inside game will always still be in play, it's just a matter of how much to go either way. There will be matchups this season where SC will need a strong perimeter game to win.

I’m fine if Raven never shoots as long as she continues to lead the SEC in assists-turnover margin and keeps the team running fast and smooth. With her, Pao Pao and Fulwiley they don’t worry much about presses because they get the ball over halfcourt quickly and with ease, one of the best transition teams in WBB still. Their primary ball handlers have supreme handles and court awareness. Even Tessa can break pressure easily. But against huge teams like UCLA they will need their perimeter offense to be working, which they know and are working on now.

UCLA is not playing a rounded game. If they are going to let Betts get 30 points a game, then they won't win the big games. Betts has been fragile and to rely on her to carry the team is not smart. That said.....they are a hard match up with size.

Calling Betts fragile this early in her career is probably jumping the gun. When she is in the starting lineup she is really hard to defend, and it looks like she is taking the next step up the skills ladder tbh. She can wreck most defenses if her guards are good with their passes. Kiki has been out the last two games, she should be back soon.

I may be wrong, but I seem to remember they are the tallest team in D1. Betts isn’t the only big to worry on, they are deep and long at most spots.

She is mentally fragile, not so much physically. It’s been a problem her entire career.
